I have to thank Age of Empires 2 and the Aztec campaign specifically for warming my parents up to the idea of not all video games being bad. One day I asked them who Montezuma was and where Tenochtitlan is. They thought I must've heard it at school but were surprised it would be taught at that age (I think I was like 9 years old at the time) until I explained them that the narrator in my game told a story about it. :D

Beyond hoping the Aztecs get some revamped love soon, I hope we get more civs like a Native North American tribe or Pacific Islanders. Would love more infantry based tribal civs after the many euro-castle building ones we have been seeming to get.
@CyberDrewanАй бұрын
I definitely feel like they could put in the Mississippians and/or the Polynesians if they really wanted to. The biggest hurdles around these civs are: 1. Lack of written history, though this doesn’t have to be a deal breaker, 2. Necessary regional units that would really only apply to their civilization, and 3. Campaigns that would almost exclusively be against the same civilization that you were playing as. Number 3 is the biggest one. A good/unique campaign is a good way to entice casual players to buy the DLC, and campaigns (and even historical battles) become tricky to make if no other civilization could be really be used in the setting. That being said, I would still love to see them try!
@leonardo_pandaboffАй бұрын

Aztecs have been continually powercrept and nerfed in the early game through the years. They need some work done to them. I'd say try their hand at making the jag a power unit thats closer in existance to the teutonic knight but a bit less armored, expensive and faster. Currently it has zero usecases bar it fighting the teutonic knight so any changes to it would only help the civ.
@KarnatilАй бұрын
Increasing the cost, then using that extra budget to give it more attack (and more +infantry bonus) would make it a great pop-efficient unit for when you're maxed out. It also fits with the monks in that after each encounter, you'd want to heal them up because each point of health would be worth more to your economy.

Question: Why is the Aztec Chinampa not part of the civ in this game (or even referenced)? For those who don't know, a Chinampa is basically a farming system utilized by the Aztecs where they would build farms on artificial islands. I don't know how this process exactly works, but it was HUGELY successful for the Aztec Empire, and many farmers in Mexico today are still practicing this farming technique. In a modded version of Age Of Mythology (and hopefully later in a future expansion for the Retold version that recently came out), the Chinampa is a creatable building when playing as the Aztecs, and it's one of the most important buildings for that entire civilization, so why is it not mentioned and/or included in AOE2?

I feel like Garland wars slightly misses the point to make Aztec infantry really pop. I might adjust it to grant all counter infantry a bonus to their usual roles, Eagles bonus attack against Archer units (particularly for performance against elephant or cavalry archers) Spearmen a bonus +4 against cavalry and elephants, for a total +8 to offset the +10 Halb advantage, and Jaguar warriors woule benefit from upgrading their anti infantry damage to be even better at their primary role so they differentiate against their champions. As for what Aztec Champions need? Probably nothing, but maybe anti-siege, anti-Building or something similar to be more effective without gaining power over theur current resource efficient design. This makes the composition of your army more diverse and makes Aztecs perform better per resource collected even in trash wars, where they utterly lack cavalry to deal with skirmishers anyway.

If I were to give the Aztecs any changes, I'd do the following: - Change their carry capacity bonus to +2/3/4/5 based on Age rather than a flat +3. Slightly weaker early, although it means you don't have to be as conscious about force-dropping herdables, and it becomes better later on. - Give the Jaguar Warrior +3 armor versus infantry (+4 as Elites). This would be akin to how Royal Heirs makes Shotel Warriors resistant to cavalry, and would make Jaguar Warriors much more cost-effective against infantry without making them stronger against archers or cavalry. This would at least solve their cost-efficiency problem compared to the Swordsman line. Beyond that, though, I'm not sure what I'd do.

Jaguar Warriors should convert units they kill in combat. Since historically the rank of Jaguar Warrior was awarded to warriors who had brought back 4 captives from their raids. Alternatively, you could just make it so that the units the Jaguar warrior kills offer some kind of gold bonus, since the captives mostly ended up as sacrifices or slaves anyways.

The champion duel where they lose to Dravidians (Performance is identical in this match up, though Dravidians are better vs 2+ armor units), and Burmese (Aztec champs actually deal 1 more damage, though both kill each other in the same number of hits, so it's irrelevant in a direct fight.), is a bit misleading. Of course, Burmese get their +3 attack for free, and they get +1/2 in feudal/castle, which makes their militia/spear lines generally a bit better.

(MASSIVE TEXT ALERT) I think the Aztecs and the other American civilizations should have more unique units and mechanics that differentiate them more from the civilizations of the old world. Differences that can give a unique touch to the gameplay with historical bases. For example, historically the Aztecs made use of recruits who had learned discipline and military art in schools, where they were taught to work as a team repairing and constructing buildings in their neighborhood and were taken to war to carry the army's supplies and sometimes contribute to combat by digging holes under the walls to pass under them, or build and install stairs to pass over them and build bridges. With this in mind, what if the Aztecs lose the ability to make conventional siege units like battering rams or trebuchets for reasons of historical consistency and get these recruits in return? This new unit would be a combination of a villager, a battering ram, and a siege tower. It would be able to build walls, towers, castles, repair buildings and even build transport ships, in addition to being able to cut down trees and mine gold and stone at high speed, but without being able to obtain resources from them, this mechanic would only be to circumvent the enemy's natural defenses by cutting down the trees and ruin their economy by taking away their sources of gold and stone. It would have great resistance to arrows, a bonus against buildings and the ability to install ladders on the walls, replacing battering rams and siege towers. In this way, other units could be added to the American civilizations that cover what other units do. Perhaps the Scorpions could be replaced by heavy archers, whose latest upgrade provides them with poisoned arrows that constantly weaken enemies, even with good anti-projectile armor. Maybe now they could have multipurpose transport ships, which when you introduce a specific type of unit they get a different mechanic, like introducing archers whose number of arrows increases as you add more, or only putting champions that allow you to raid enemy ships and capture them. With the disadvantage that this strategy takes more population space than an ordinary warship, it is more expensive because of all the units you must put in to reach the maximum power of the ship, and it is riskier as it is a fragile transport ship. What do you think? Would you like a change like this? I hope you liked my idea, thanks for reading.

hey spirit, does petard benefit from military bonus creation speed?
@torri776Ай бұрын
I think the biggest problem with Aztecs is that their weaknesses severely outweigh their strengths. They have no hard counter to Heavy Cavalry or Gunpowder, subpar Arbalesters (having no Thumb Ring is bad lategame), have a complete Siege Workshop but need to invest the gold in other areas so they can't use Siege Onagers, and scale surprisingly poorly, falling off in late Imperial Age despite having a tech that literally gives +4 attack to Infantry. They are too squishy, and Jaguar Warriors are insufferably weak, making Aztecs essentially a harder version of Goths where they are quantity over quality - too many units for not enough of an outcome. That is why Mayans and Incas feel much better to play despite not being as fun or flashy, because their Eagle Warriors are so much tankier and thus have better raiding utility. I personally believe that Aztecs at the very least, either need a reason to justify having no Halberdiers (via giving Garland Wars two effects; its current one AND causing Eagle Warriors to do double the bonus damage to heavy cavalry in particular), or just give them back the Halberdier, like they used to have in The Conquerors. Also just buff the Jaguar Warrior in more ways than just their stats. I would give them a revenge mechanic where their next attack does more damage based on how low their health is, increased based on the enemy unit's maximum health. Maybe that would be too complicated.
@CaptainnCavemannnnАй бұрын
If they just increased the carrying capacity back up to +5 for a more noteworthy bonus, and chose either to fill out the rest of the blacksmith tree, add a +2 cavalry bonus damage to Garland Wars, added +1 more damage to skirmishers, or outright gave them Halberds, they would feel better for me. I hate how little an impact they have in team games, and how little of an eco bonus you have in 1v1 because the tiny carry capacity bonus doesn't let feel like you get as good of a lead over someone who turtles in fear of a militia rush. It makes rushing monks for relics and early conversions all the less attractive.
@zeyner8160Ай бұрын
this is mi opinion to buff the "infantry" lines (overal). 1. Just delete supplies and reasign the stats-cost ratio. ---supplies is a useless tech (in the way it's a MUST HAVE (or an equal bonus as goths or incas) to play militia so the Stats-cost ratio of the militia line is barely afordable ONLY after supplies are researched) 2. Just reduce a bit the collition box of infantry (as done in the trade units)in general, hence less blocking problems, less non atacking units and more attacks while fighting enemies. (this is maybe not just for infantry, but mele units in general) 3. slightly faster units. just that archers can´t scape Forever, but also can attack and scape for a reasonable time. 4. Slightly faster attack. just the same as the knight line but with a Prio in the attack (the infantry attack before the knight) this way the knight still win the match but its better the trade for the infantry. 5. And for Jaguars, its only that the cost its NOT worth (aside of vs infantry). As i said the REAL cost of militia isn´t 60f 20g, but 45F 20G. jaguars only needs to have a better cost-ratio. (been cheaper) and of course the points i have mention to do the infantry a viable unit class. pd. I know my english isn't the best, surely i have many grammar mistakes, Srry for that. :)
