I can see the instant almost-1:1 wood to food conversion being useful in Forest Nothing games....
@ledancingphoenix3 жыл бұрын
Its only 1:1 in imp tho, where you have enough space through onager cut and mostly more than enough wood anyways. That's the point when your attetion is needed the most cutting to your allies/the enemy, getting upgrades, massing army (mostly pikes and siege, so not much food needed) and startong trade. You usually dont lack food too much with any generic civ, with them even less. If you then truly have nothing better to do, you can go build and delete farms... Also it does take quite a bit to build a farm, so the time you need to rebuild a deleted farm (which grants you 10% of the food) would give you around 5% of the max food while normally working on the old one. If anything, I'd see it as a useful tool to get slightly faster to feudal and castle age, and mass some more food for imp and onager upgrades to get to all described above faster than all the others! Then once you got space the farming boost will carry your eco further. It will need some fine tuning as you dont want to waste too much wood as long as the market price is still good, so rather get a bit faster to feudal, then abuse it more after selling and both after getting feudal and castle age farm upgrades.
@the_snobot3 жыл бұрын
@@ledancingphoenix even at a worse exchange rate, getting food faster in dark or feudal is still going to be worth it (or worth trying IMO). Who cares if you waste some wood on a bad exchange; it's not like there aren't millions more trees on forest nothing.

@@ledancingphoenix My apologies; the window cut off at the line break between paragraphs and I didn't realize there was more in the post to read. I think we generally agree though that using it to get a boost on early villager production or faster age-up is probably the best use for it, rather than relying on it later in the game when you've got more going on. Burning some wood early in the game to get a fast influx of food to allow the creation of more villagers right away and/or clicking up faster to sell the wood for gold/stone feels like it's definitely a strategy worth experimenting with. It may not work out, but if nothing else it's something new to try.

I kinda wanted to see how all the numbers changed when factoring in having a Chinese ally. Specifically, if the Poles have both an Inca and Chinese ally, what rate can they convert wood to food at, and at what ratio?
@cedric77513 жыл бұрын
A comparison in wood to food conversion rate vs selling wood and buying food at the market would have been welcome too
@PhilipGianfortoni3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious about a strat with a Chinese ally where you put every single food vil on wood and then just convert wood to food as needed. Conveniently, if you are using some choppers to do the conversion, you aren't losing the wood that they are carrying because they automatically deposit it when the farm is built. My rough calculations are that with 75 choppers and a Chinese ally, you could generate approximately 1200 wood and 1200 food per minute, and all you would have to do is task 20 vils onto conversion every minute. I'm imagining a strategy where you put a Fulwark up next to two different wood lines, and then every time you hit between 600 - 1000 wood, you task 5 vils from each lumber camp to build farms, auto-tasking the vils back to wood after they finish the farm. Look back in 12 seconds (or 7 seconds if you are with Inca ally) and delete the farms. You'll end up with 400 wood leftover and 600 food if you started with 1000 food. Repeat every ~30 seconds to keep an even balance of wood and food income. You really only need one or two sets of conversion villagers and the rest can just keep chopping wood wherever on the map. If you forget to delete the farms immediately, the villagers are still collecting food for you, so you are still getting something. I believe with Chinese, the ratio is just over 1:1 with all farm upgrades. Conversion rate is going to obviously depend on how many vils you are using for this but something like 8.5 food / vil / second, I think with treadmill crane + Inca ally if you are able to somehow have no idle time. Obviously this only really works in Imperial age, but it makes farming eco a lot harder to raid. I need to know if this strat is viable.

To anyone interested in some of the history. The folwark is basically an estate or farm owned by a noble. The serfs would live there and work there on the farms thus the population bonus. Folwarks also had defensive structures such as pallisade walls or stone keeps in order to provide security to the serfs in case of raids. The poles seem like a cool and fun civilisation in AoE2 but I am really disappointed in the way they portrayed the winged hussars. Historically they were composed of noble volunteers and knights, each hussar had to pay for his own equipment and would possess some servants and land. In AoE2 they are a spam trash unit and arent really that strong. They should have made the winged hussars replace the paladin not the light cavalry hussar.
@jakubbartczuk39563 жыл бұрын
That, and also it's pretty weird that Lithuanians have bonuses to heavy cavalry, with paladins that are stronger than generic paladins, while Poles have one of the weakest heavy cav. In reality it was Lithuanians who provided light cavalry (which was partly Tatar) in the Commonwealth. It's even in the game that Vytautas used Tatar-inspired cavalry tactic with his light cav which was more suitable for this than Polish knights.

I like that they do more with unique buildings, it's something that really adds to a civ. Maybe they can do something with a mine too in the future, like maybe one that like town centres can be garrisoned to gain a ranged attack but does not have that without units in it. Also not very tough since it should only cost wood and would just be buying miners a little time until your soldiers show up. An upgrade to wooden walls could also be fun. Not as tough as a stone wall for sure, but would make the wooden wall more sturdy and could be great for a civ that gets no stone walls. Some kind of unique monastery that trains more than just monks could be cool too. Or a faction that can build tougher gate houses which have a tower on each side with an attack. Or a town centre upgrade, to something similar that Age of Mythology has. Or an armoury as a special blacksmith, which could have extra armour and weapon upgrades available.

I want to see the Poles with a 3x or 9x civ bonus mod now. Although I'm curious how the Folwark is programmed, and whether that would work.
@KHariram3 жыл бұрын
The way it is programmed, farm techs only work once. The game keeps track of a number which starts at 17.5. There are shadow techs which have horse collar, heavy plow and crop rotation as prerequisites and they increase this number by 7.5, 12.5 and 17.5 respectively. This is not coded directly into the farming techs. In these repeated techs game modes, such shadow techs only research once. There are 4 more shadow techs. First one is unlocked by having from chinese team bonus and increases the number by 1.75. The remaining 3 have the first one and the farming techs as prereqs and they do what you would expect. These shadow techs being pole exclusive explains why other civs don't benefit from converted folwark.

It was that last bit about getting the instant food and deleting I was most interested in. I could see some situations where a player playing Poles would want to do that, especially if wood is easy to get and they want to age up quick. Makes a lot of sense to me to have just those eight farms, gain those resources, pump out villagers, and put them on gathering wood. Then again, my ELO is 0 because I have never played an online game. And I have played AoE II since the beta when it was handed to me by my mom's co-worker when she worked at Microsoft.

Discuss the psychological benefit for both Players and the Polish Units for knowing that they have the most beautiful farmlands of any civilization.

if it also counts as a house id love it if we could garrison villagers inside

What happens if Folwark ranges are overlapping each other and a farm is build so that it is over all completely in range of Folwarks, but not in just a single one of them? (6 parts in range of Folwark A and 3 parts in Range of Folwark B)
@Ty5oN1013 жыл бұрын
I think people underate the benefits of getting the food up front. The earlier in the game you are the more a little bit of resources add up. That means the resources can be immediately invested instead of getting that bonus overtime.
@Gashahn243 жыл бұрын
4:47 And I thought its the exact opposite. That having at least one tile of the farms in the range will grant you the bonus.

I'm still curious whether or not a farm that is entirely covered by folwark bonus area via multiple folwarks still gets a bonus?
@iainblr3 жыл бұрын
I tested this myself and the farm has to be inside of a single Folwark in order to get the bonus, so you can't use smart placement to be able to get additional farm bonus by using the extra spaces around 2 different Folwarks.

You get the food faster, but you also have to be gathering wood faster too in order to place the farms faster. How many more worker(s) on wood do you need for a full set of 8/16/24/etc farms I wonder? I don't know the collection rates sadly
@michaelrunningdeer87783 жыл бұрын
Ok i just had a thought when you get upgrades like horse collar you get more food but use the bonus less throughout the game so could it be more beneficial to maybe get horse collar but no more or maybe none at all to balance out how much and how often you get the use out of that instant food bonus???

6:13 What if you convert multiple Folwarks placed in such a way that all their range indicators together give a spot that fits a farm?
@mscbijles12563 жыл бұрын
At least in many other games this wouldn’t work, as it’s checked against every building separately. But who knows, depends on what the devs chose here.
@LotsOfS3 жыл бұрын
I guess the first question to ask is what if I place a farm half inside one of my own Folwarks' range, with the other half in another's?

The weird triangles around the converted folwark remind you that this game is published by Microsoft
