In my journey, being spiritual but not religious meant freedom. However, with no guidance based on a foundation, I almost ended up dead and most likely in help. So much for freedom. Now I know I want True Freedom in Christ. But it means doing it His Way, not mine.

My tendency is to fall into the religious side of the spectrum rather than being spiritually and religiously balanced. However, receiving the Eucharist as frequent as possible has been of tremendous help. Knowing that I am receiving Jesus himself in the Eucharist, through which He abides in me and I abide in Him, is the perfect reminder of the the perfect Spiritual and religious balance.

Most people don't want to be told how they should act or what they should do. It's only when we realize that God's ways will lead us to the best life possible that these "rules" seem less restrictive and more freeing. Lincoln said that freedom is not the right to do what we want but what we ought. Truer words were never spoken. God bless!!

@Marci HF Y’all don’t have a clue on what being Spiritual is about for another person. God is a Spirit and we’re spiritual beings. The Bible don’t talk about religion Jesus said take up your cross and follow him. The only thing I don’t do as me being a Follower a Spiritual Being I have a personal relationship with the Heavenly Father I don’t attend any church building. I do worship the FATHER Every day and I have a day that belongs to the Father fully. And with the FATHER ‘S Guidance each day it leave to room for stumbling in my faith or yielding to temptation. As I read a lot of comments that Christians say we stumble in our sins every day that’s a whole lie. When I was in darkness i use to tell myself when I do become a Christian I don’t empathize to backslide like I see many Christians do or do any old things like I know pastors and church goers to sleeping with each other in the church, still lying I wanted to be different I wanted to be ready to obey the command of the FATHER without looking back to my old life. So being Spiritual for me is obeying the FATHER ‘S commandments. Church didn’t save me I ask the FATHER to change me but I didn’t realize he change me until 18 months after I didn’t put it together. But the final straw for me was I simply as God what he want from me what he want me to do. And 3 weeks after that I was saved my life began I’ve finally found love Peace Joy and HAPPINESS that this world didn’t give to me. So yes I am SPIRITUAL with a personal relationship with the ALMIGHTY CREATOR FATHER. And this relationship allows me to live a righteous loving forgiving selfless Joyful Peaceful. I would never say I won’t go in a church but I won’t be a member of a church. If I see a need to help out someone with money or food or a hug whatever the need be I’m in. What makes me happy is to hear others talk about GOD but to question one walk is a big problem unless of course y’all see someone being ungodly doing ungodly things. Church didn’t save me the FATHER himself took the desires of this world from me. And put me in his world. That is more fulfilling.
@mikelopez85642 жыл бұрын
@@Purpleflower7777 , well, there you have it; Jesus didn’t even have to come, because you’ve saved yourself! I guess you even baptized yourself, although I think that isn’t how Jesus said to do it. What’s more is there was no need for him to build His Church, obviously, you’re a saint and you don’t need His Church. And it was unnecessary for Him to begin His sacrifice with a communal meal and command us to share this meal, because you’re saved already and you didn’t need that. I could go on but you probably get the point. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Jn 14:15

The truth behind that kind of statement - spiritual but not religious - is they know that there are commitments religion expect of them like supporting the Church financially, which they do not like to do. Another thing, being involved in a religious organization takes their time, thus reducing their time for fun and pleasures - like spending more than an hour getting ready for Church and including one hour of listening to the Gospel and homilies which they find hard to agree with because they already have set their own belief. These are the selfish kind of people. They only care about themselves. They are also in denial, refusing to accept their faults and imperfections.

Being truly devoutly religious means that you better be deeply spiritual, especially if you're Catholic. Funny, those that criticize us for reciting rote prayers, don't mention those Eastern religions that do the same thing. Prayer comes in many forms. Neona Journey hi good question Your answer lies in Romans 8 v 1 to 16 I would suggest using the NIV or NASB version as it’s easier to grasp Here’s an example of how the Father wants us to worship him John 4 v 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks The KJV says it even better. We all have flesh (our bodies ) we all have a soul (which is our carnal mind ) We all have a spirit within this tent our flesh. What raised Jesus from the dead was Holy Spirit and that’s what’s going to raise us up Romans 8 v 10 , here are two more verses regarding this John 6 v 63 the word quikeneth ( to make alive ) very important in this verse of John 6 and you will note Jesus says the flesh profits nothing. John 3 v 1 to 21 here Jesus teachers of the spirit is spirit and flesh is flesh v6 to 8 are as clear as daylight then to sum it all up 1 Corinthians 6 v 17 and Ephesians 1 v 13 you are sealed forever ( like vacuum packed ) this is your identity in Christ Jesus not your flesh or mind or feelings but faith in the knowledge you are sanctified (made Holy by faith receiving Holy Spirit and now being joined together your spirit in Christ Jesus through Holy Spirit) 2 Thessalonians 2 v 13 and Hebrews 10 v 10 take note on the word ONCE this is a permanent standing before the Father which you have in Spirit as with this in mind when you read this passage it will come to life for you Hebrews 6 v 4 to 6 There are many verses with corresponding to the above should you seek more info I’ll be glad to help out

This video has deep personal relevance for me. For years, I was in the spiritual but not religious camp. Now I have reconnected with my Catholic faith but I still have moments where I doubt my own heart. Am I doing enough? Is going to Mass enough? All my imperfections get laid bare when I ponder this one. A large part of why I stayed away from church was because I know God knows my heart even better than I do and He would know if I was just faking it. I was convinced He would rather I stay away than live a lie. But that was Satan getting in there and putting that wedge between me and God. He wanted me for his own. Like I say, I still struggle with the question, am I dong enough, but something is better than nothing and my heart is in the right place now. I'll write off the doubts to Satan and keep walking the path with God. I have faith, and faith is enough. The rest is a work in progress, as it is for all of us. Now I have to match my actions with that faith but it's easier now because unlike before, I'm not alone.

WITH ALL OUR HEART.....but he, JESUS concluded by saying that.....WE MUST LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS WE LOVE OURSELVES....and to me this is where RELIGION and SPIRITUALITY and stand on common ground and enhance each other. When I falter which is often I have found that I can bring myself back too CENTER by meditating on this simple thought ........” LORD HELP ME... TO ABIDE IN YOU .......AS YOU ABIDE IN ME...” My Faith has taught me many times over (77 years) that CHRIST so LOVES US and that HE is with us and in us ALWAYS and FOREVER my prayer is that I want give Him that same TRUST BACK.....MICHAEEL Talbots sings a wonderfully inspirational hymn that tell ... we are the Hands and Eyes of GOD and if we live our lives treating others with that in mind then and only then are WE abiding in HIM as as HE UNCONDITIONALLY ABIDES ALWAYS IN US...

I am a convert too -- 50 years ago, and it still gives me joy. I'm so glad my wonderful husband asked me if I would consider becoming Catholic. I had been a "Heinz 57 Variety" Christian before that. My family had gone to Presbyterian, Unitarian, Church Of Christ, and Baptist churches. As a teenager I started to pray that God would show me THE way that was true, as I realized all the denominations think THEIR way is THE way. That cannot be. Not saying that they all cannot go to Heaven but it has to be easier if we choose to follow Him on the road HE designed His Church to lead us. My only difficulty is that I often feel that I wish that youthful zeal I had at 19 was back. I taste it every now and then but it is hard. Prayer helps, but more my own prayer, me just talking to God. I love the Rosary... I just don't love sitting to pray the Rosary. It is so hard for me. Is that part of being religious not spiritual? I've been working on this essentially my entire adult life, and I'm still not "there". Any suggestions? By the way, love your videos, can't wait to watch more of them. Thank you for making them!
@aeriszan4 жыл бұрын
If I may offer a suggestion? Try praying the rosary while taking a walk. I’m easily distracted when I pray, but I’ll keep my rosary in hand when I take my dog for our morning walk and I’ll get a much more meaningful meditation than trying to force myself to sit still or kneel for fifteen minutes.
@miracles_metanoia2 жыл бұрын
I like praying the rosary walking or biking and combining it with intercession prayer. Sometimes at the gym too!! When I’m at home sitting, it’s usually role-play. My eyes closed I enter deep visualizations with my body kinesthetically acting out the motions (for example - joyful mysteries - physically opening the door and imagining I’m with Elizabeth elated at our Lord’s presence in a womb, nativity - entering the humble surroundings with the 3 Maggi (wisemen) or Sheppard’s, feeling the door frame, feeling baby Jesus’ tiny hands and feet, the umbilical cord, etc)

Not to knock anyone, just my journey in my body and my life I can’t speak or live for anyone else. I just know regardless of religion we are all here together but my connection is to my higher power not people who tell me I’m going to hell to believe in your beliefs.. hard pass 🙅🏽♀️

When I tell people I am spiritual not religious. I am saying I do not believe in having a religion but having a relationship with God. When I connect to God one on one he leads me and guides me in the right direction. Mankind has been so corrupted and mislead. Religions have been based off of mankind. I don’t trust the world. I only trusted in God and his words. I am full and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Spiritualism is different to religion entirely. In many cases, its simply the belief in a greater purpose for humans both in life and in spirit, none of which is related to any religion. Religion is a funny thing in my opinion. Apparently there's 10,000 religions. So either 9,999 have been wasting there time or 10,000. Not exactly much wiggle room here. I genuinely don't understand why people fight over this in 2022. Surely we have evolved past this now.

Hi Keith, you’ve nailed it once again. I think that God has called you into the church to evangelize Catholics from within. Most Catholics know about Jesus but they don’t know Him. My wife and I run Alpha in our parish....yes it was developed by Anglicans but it’s sole purpose is to encounter Christ in a personal way...to come to know Him and love Him. After that we run an after alpha program where the aim is to grow in Holiness. For that we have found that there there is no better program than Consecration to Jesus through Mary. St Louis de Montfort said that Consecration to Mary was the quickest, easiest, and surest way to Holiness. He was right. Bless ya mate...as we say down here in Australia (the great south land of the Holy Spirit).

Could you do a video on the subject of "nominalism?" That's a word I never really heard of until a couple of years ago when my priest said it, but it's all I've known most of my life but didn't realize it as a "Cradle Catholic." I even went to Catholic school for eight years but looking back I see how the focus was barely on being Catholic. All of the worldly things were emphasized more like sports, popularity, fashion, being college-bound, even drinking and smoking to be "cool." My parents were both poorly formed too so there was no emphasis at home other than going to Mass on Sundays (most of the time) and that was about it. I have friends who are Protestant and who are supposedly raising their kids Protestant, but it's the same story. It barely has an influence on how they live their lives. Wondering what your experience was with this as a Protestant and if you have noticed nominal Catholics too, and how do you think this all happened? I'm part of the Gen X generation.
@julieelizabeth48565 жыл бұрын
On a side note I wanted to add that for my whole life I've heard people say things like how "religious" they are or not, or someone else is or is not, like it's something that is to be decided on an individual basis on a sliding scale, no matter if they identify as Catholic or Protestant. Yet the Bible warns us about being "lukewarm" as being the worst.
@teresak85305 жыл бұрын
Thank you, for explaining the difference of these two. Many of my protestant friends or family members tell me 'you are religious' because I like to go to Mass daily when I can. Pray my rosary, visits to Blessed Sacrament....so on.

Spiritual values don't need a tortured theological explanation or by a dependance on "magical thinking". Belief in invisible spirits was an almost universal response by primitave man to explain inexplicable events by positing invisible beings as the responsible agents. Belief in spirits is unnessary. Spiritual values are those values which are held in Reverence and Awe.

Incorrect. You are asserting that your Christian perspective and belief in “God” is the only correct one. As a religious fundamentalist, you likely believe that your religion is the sole truth and that all else is wrong. Being “spiritual” means having the freedom to believe in the concept of God or the divine without the constraints of religious barriers or constructs. Spirituality involves a direct experience of the divine or God without reliance on a cult or dogma. That is the main difference. Additionally, there are many other structured spiritual paths and traditions that extend beyond the limited scope of the Abrahamic religions.

@@waltermromanoff349 I tell you what, maybe you can answer me a few questions first? Did Jesus come to earth to set up a church? (ref Math 16:18) Has that church survived the "Gates of Hades" till this day? What possible reason would a man have to leave Christ's own Church? Your church, what man founded it? If this man was inspired by God to save the ancient Church from its errors, where are the miracles to prove he was a man sent from God? Martin Luther's new doctrine of Sola scriptura, where does it say this in the bible! If it is not clear in the bible, what miracles did Martin Luther show to justify making this new doctrine! Where in the bible does it say that to become a Christian you must pronounce you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior? Check out Revelations 12: Who do you think the woman in heaven is who has a crown of 12 stars; who bore a son who will rule with an iron sceptre (Ref Psalm 2:8-9) Could it be possible that Mary is the queen of heaven and her Son is the Messiah who will “rule with an iron scepter” and be "caught up to the throne of God"! Finally if we both went back in time to the Apostles Church, would the early church look like mine(Catholic) or yours(Protestant)Let me see, the early Church had Bishops Priests and Deacons; The early church believed in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist; The early church believed in calling a priest Father; the early church went to a priest for the forgiveness of sins; The early church believed in the importance of good deeds and faith in the attaining of salvation! I think it looks very Catholic :-)

I encounter this quite a bit. There's a misconception that being "religious" is a bad thing. But that would have been a foreign concept to the early Christians-- they were religious. Those claiming to be spiritual tend to mean that they are creating God in their own image, rather than living out the faith as received by those who handed it on to us from those who handed it to them, going as far back as the Apostles who received it from Christ. Being "religious" can be a bad thing, however, when it devolves into a scrupulous practice of the external religion without an internal relationship with Christ. But those who pit religion against spirituality are acknowledging that they don't understand either one.

In my probably simplistic viewpoint, I see the way to the left and to the right and then the narrow way of faith in the middle. The way to the left is like that of the Pharisees. It's a philosophy of life that is based on rules and laws. The Christian Pharisee focuses on their salvation and has a transactional relationship with God. They give some of themselves now with the idea that they have some kind of benefit later. Their mantra is full of religious pride - "You are evil because you don't take the law as seriously as I do". To the right we have the occult and its many variations of the same philosophy of life which is - "you are your own god". The mantra of the occult is "do what you want, there are no repercussions for your actions". The middle and narrow path is the way of Jesus. That is to learn to trust in Him to the point where you give your whole heart to Him. It's that point of relationship where you can honestly say to Him: "Let your will be done". It's that point in Gethsemane where Jesus Himself wants His Father to spare Him from what He knows is coming - but still let Your will be done. There is no transactional relationship here. It's simple obedience to say and to do whatever He wants you to because His ways are best. His ways are good. His ways are perfect. As a side note, it's not the occultists that Jesus banged heads with the most. It's the Pharisees. It's the religious leaders of the day. The Pharisees rise up the ranks of the church. They bang out the law. They judge everyone and do nothing to bear the load. They are so certain of their own righteousness that they don't recognise that Christ is not even in relationship with them. Many of us Christians are so careful to avoid anything from the occult, but fail miserably to recognise the real enemy of Jesus - the miserable, heartless, hateful religious Pharisee that is right in front of us.
@felixyoghurt32918 ай бұрын
I'm spiritual and not religious, never have been religious. Being religious is believing someone else's experience of God, being spiritual is having your own experience of enlightenment. Hate what religion does to mankind. If you are Christian then you know you were given free will, there is no need to submit to God. God is in all of us. Being spiritual means following spiritualism. This video, to say the least, is very misleading or naive, it does nothing to say what spiritual really is and yet it will attract condemnation from people who scoff at those that say "Spiritual" but NOT "Religious".
@powerliftingcentaur5 жыл бұрын
This is good video. As a Gay Catholic, the challenge for me is to be more religious. If I look at my Church in the abstract, in terms of much of its theology, and it’s catechism, I wonder every day why I should stay when I think it is trying to kill me. But if I look at the smaller picture, the day to day life of the Church, to be found in its Mass and it’s sacraments, I feel the Church sustaining me. There is a schizophrenia to this that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. In the end, I may well decide to be spiritual and not religious. But...It isn’t easy to leave. I foresee a terrible cost.
@powerliftingcentaur5 жыл бұрын
The problem I have with so many of the comments I read here is that people who desire to be spiritual without being religious seem not to be taken seriously. It is as if they are thought to be copping out, rather than being responsive and responsible. That is a facile reaction, in my opinion, and a disappointment to me.

Hi Keith, great video! it seems I’m a finding all of these talks two years after the fact. I’m the one that just got confirmed on the 5th . I really appreciate you answering back. So I’m recovering alcoholic, and IV drug user. 22 years ago I found a 12 step program. I’m sure you can guess which one.When I came into the program I was a staunch atheist except for when I thought I was going to die,or go to jail and then I would throw out Foxhole prayers. Deep down inside I always believed in God! I just figured God hated me, and I wasn’t too thrilled about God. Anyway when I first came into the rooms people would tell me that they were spiritual not religious. They would say religion is for people that don’t want to go to hell, and spirituality is for people that have already been there! I ran with that for several years. Ironically the man that became my sponsor, also became like a father to me! He Ed gave me a talk by a man named Father Joseph Martin. Father Martin got sober in the 12 step program in 1948 and he was a circuit speaker. He did a talk called Feelings and Chalk Talk. It’s geared for alcoholics, but anybody could benefit from listening to it. It seems there have been Catholics in my life that have been pulling me towards the Church for years now. December 2000 I was in a treatment facility, and I befriended a lady in there who was a Catholic. She gave me a Saint Maximilian Medallion, and even though I claimed to be an atheist, I wore that thing religiously (pun intended) for a couple of years until it broke off my neck and I lost it. The only thing I knew about Saint Maximilian was that he was the saint of drug addicts, but I never picked up a drink or a drug the whole time I wore that medallion. Anyway that was a really good talk, and I enjoy listening to you. Thank you for all that you do. Sorry for the long comment. It’s only now that I can reflect over all these years and see connecting elements. Christ has always been there guiding and protecting me. My uncle used to tell me that God takes care of children and fools! Certainly proves so in my case. Hopefully I can pay it forward to somebody else. God bless! Sorry for the typos talk and text. If anybody’s interested you can find Father Martin’s talks on KZbin. Chalk talk is easy the one on feelings I’ve had a harder time finding Had them on Old cassette tapes. LOL
