A little background - the woman you hear introduce the album was the lead singer’s girlfriend. She left him and married Richard Ashcroft of the Verve. The album is about the loss of the relationship and how he dealt with it.

He's always argued that the album was written prior to Kate leaving him, how much truth there is in that is up to the listener I guess! To complicate matters further she was still in the band as keyboard player after she left him and toured this album with them. Messy. Of course, the whole thing could just be about Jason's heroin addiction so who knows.

Kate married Richard in 1995, the same year Pure Phase (the previous Spiritualized album) came out, so I don't know how strong Jason's argument is, but maybe he gets the benefit of the doubt. Incredible lyrically and musically either way. 1997 was a stupidly good year for albums.

This album blew my mind when I was first getting into non-mainstream music, but I don’t listen to it much now other than the opener. Also, you should do Unwound’s New Plastic Ideas, it’s not weird like Leaves was, it’s just peak rock music all the way through.

Love that album and love your reaction! Really glad you enjoyed it. I think Lazer Guided Melodies is almost as strong as this one and has the kind of wintry vibe that makes me return to it at least once during wintertime. Not sure it deserves your reaction but just dropping it here, maybe check it in your free time :) How about reacting to some classic EPs? You've listened to albums by these artists but they've got some EPs that are worth checking out Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy (it'd be a great idea to pair it with the Windowlicker single which is among his most popular songs) Boards of Canada - In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country (only 4 songs but man, the first 3 songs are absolutely fantastic) Burial - Kindred (I remember you enjoyed Untrue and this EP is on a similar level of quality, might be even better actually!) My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise (very different sound from Loveless, much rawer and dirtier but still awesome)

BP stands for British Pharmacopia. The packaging is a prescription drug package and the band is English. So CDs even came in a blister pack, like a pill, and the liner notes were folded up like medical info often is with pills. I saw J perform this album front to back at Radio City Music Hall. It was the top of the mountain. Absolutely amazing. The band consisted of J and Spiritualized, a gospel choir, and an orchestra. It was like seeing a rainbow for the first time, from the inside. Cop Shoot Cop is not about Police. Cop means to get drugs. Then Shoot is obviously shooting the drugs, then Cop again (get more). It's a vicious cycle.

Would like to preface this by saying I'm not into reaction videos at all but clicked as soon as I read the title. It's comfortably one of my favourite albums ever. Your video was compelling because you seem eager and receptive to listen to new stuff and look motivated to figure out your thoughts and interpretations - really liked bits like the Sampha shout early on. Also, your comment section is full of quality recommendations and looks like a happy, abuzz place with people encouraging you to try all these different things. Think you've got something going here with this channel as a whole! Good luck!

Nicely done. I've been a fan of Jason's work since Spacemen 3, and it's been a real trip just following along. I spent a few hours with him a couple of years ago and he was just the sweetest, warmest guy and not at all what you might imagine from the music or lyrics. I'd recommend listening to the 'Live at the Albert Hall' album - there are some great arrangements of the tracks you've liked here plus bangers from the previous albums up to that point. Cheers.

Think it’s time…..you need to listen to the album ‘Hairway to Steven’ but the legendary ‘Butthole Surfers’! They have to be one of the most deranged, but most important and influential alternative bands to come out of the U.S….the likes of Nirvana would Not have happened if it wasn’t for the BHS’s! Starting in about 1980, this is probably one of their best albums from 1988.

great album and review. I like their debut album "Lazer Guided Melodies" best, it's happier overall, and there's a sense of naiviety and playfulness. "Shine a Light" is one of their best tracks ever and is on that album, a concert highlight in the bands setlist to this day. This album came at a dark time, as the singer/guitarist/composer was going through a nasty divorce with his wife, who ended up going with the lead singer of the band the Verve (btw, check out the Verve's first album, "A Storm in Heaven" which is a masterpiece of angelic sounding guitar work)

If you enjoy space as a theme I would suggest you react to 'The war of the worlds' by Jeff Wayne. I am not surre how this would fare in a reactionary setting but it's a super unique album. It's a prog rock/symphonic rock orchestra album which is also sort of an audio book/radio play. I grew up on this and I have always loved the insanely creative use of sound to create tension and paint a picture. It's also impressive how they can create as vivid of a story via an album, to me it feels like a movie, though I have also heard it hundreds of times probably. Definitely a more obscure one nowadays, though in the 70/80s it was quite popular, but I have never heard anything like it and I hope that, if not you, someone will read this comment and check it out.

I love this album! Can you cover Royal Blood albums maybe? I especially recommend listening to "Back to the Water Below" and "Typhoons". They are a rock duo. The special part is that instead of using a guitar, they use a bass guitar with amps. With "Typhoons" they made a more disco/daft punk sounding album, and "Back to the Water Below" goes more to their roots, with even some acoustic songs on it.
