After riding my Roommates 82 I built a Dresser out of a 78CB 750 Superbike. I ordered the RC 836 kit and rebuilt it with a Windjammer, Footboards, Saddle Bags and Trunk. The trunk held 2 car batteries, 3 Amps a 12" sub cut in the bottom and 2 forward facing 6x9's. 2- 8" and Horn Tweeters in the fairing. All with a Superbike Suspension and a fresh +100cc Superbike Engine.

Agreed. I have several bikes and the wing front brake is comparable to all of them. Also the handling in the parking lot is not supposed to be as depicted. Lastly the wobble at 35 is indicative of worn head bearings, or misaligned final drive. I wonder if the suspension was aired up properly and the tires had correct pressure? Next time you go to give a wing away, fly me out for a couple days and I'll get all the electronics, brakes and such working proper. I'm serious. Google Sunnbobb Goldwing.. :)

When my late wife and I first met/were dating, we'd tour all over Hwy 49/California Hwy 101 and sundry, and she ADORED the Goldwing! Her prior experiences as a Passenger on motorcycles all involved that teensy tiny little square sponge they called a 'Seat,' (Harleys, I AM talking about YOU), and all the misery they caused delicate areas of the body (Esp. for long rides/tours). Sitting on the Goldwing, with arm rests, intercom speakers and sound (Radio and Cassettes baby!), full faring (Upper and lower, guarding against road debris/insect strikes), and we were both in two-wheel heaven! Alas, far too many idiots/fools kept striving to smear us across the roadway, so I reluctantly sold my Steel Steed. Watching you folks out enjoying them is really hitting me in the nostalgia! Thank you!

@@Rogan_Dorn I typically use the ceramic coating you use for paint protection. Lasts an entire riding season without any issues so far. Detailer just did it the first time and when I took the bike back for a maintenance retouch of some areas they recoated the windshield at that time. Works better than Rain X. Rain X, possibly. I've used it on glass without any issues. I haven't seen any problems with it on plastic trim. It's essentially just spray on wax so I don't see why it would cause a problem. Maybe someone will chime in with hands on experience. The other option is the stuff made for aircraft canopys which are almost always lexan on small planes. I used to use that years ago because I had left-over from my two-seater. I'm surprised there isn't someone selling a product in their detailing catalog to be frank.

Two things that will take the front end wobble out . The bike prolly has a good number of miles on it without ever having the steering stem bearings cleaned , greased and properly adjusted . Also a proper fork brace helps . I owned one of these bikes for 27 years and know a little about them . They are a great machine but with some limitations in the handling department .

I currently ride a '81 GL1100 Goldwing & a '97 GL1500C Valkyrie. Heavy bikes at a standstill/slow manoeuvring, but once on the move the weight disappears, mainly due to the low centre of gravity with these flat fours & flat sixes. Have no problems with brakes on either bike and regularly create sparks in the twisties.

I have the 84 version of this bike, love it. A set of new pads on all three callipers (disk on the back as well) made that front brake almost aggressive, It can stop pretty quickly! Check the headstock bearings, that can make it feel a little loose. Not a speed monster but I may have touched 190km/h one time with the wind in the back.. To get it to really pull you have to rev it all the way to 7000, 7500 is the redline. The only thing is that it won't lean over as far as my previous bike (CX500) as the exhaust will scrape the road. So I've had to adjust my cornering which is probably a good thing 🙂. Jacking up the rear shocks does help somewhat. My ride to work is 35 mins on a twisty road, love it! With some care that bike will go for years!

I bought a lithium battery to save some weight on my Shiver 750. It was just under 1kg vs 4kg stock. The only downside is needing to warm it up a bit on colder mornings. On really cold mornings the first attempt to start barely kicks over the motor. Then after 2 or 3 more attempts with each one getting stronger it finally fires up. A bit disconcerting at first until someone told me that was normal for lithium batteries.

I have rode the 1500 and 1800 and have never heard of brake issues like that. Please get them checked out. I have been riding Goldwings since I was 30. Someone told me that the 1500 was like an RV, great on the hwy and clumsy around town. I could see that when you are not use to it and it is a big bike. Now on to the 1800. Game changer. The low center of gravity is awesome. I scrap the pegs in the corners. Let Whitney take an 1800 out for a spin and the glow on her face will say it all. People told me about the 1800 and they said dont test ride unless your going to buy. I went into a shop in the middle of winter and sat on one and leaned it side to side. If you have ridden many miles on the old wings and did this you can tell right away. I ended up buying one without even riding one. I have since had 2 of them and 175000 miles later. Never a regret.

A couple of things. First, crank that thing about to about 80 mph and grab as much front brake as your can. Do that 4 or 5 times to break the glazing off the pad. Or just take the pad off and sand it. Secondly, you always use both brakes when stop - ALWAYS on ANY bike. That is how the bike is designed. This allows you to lock the front wheel if you have to, with less effort as you get "power assist" from the foot peddle. Its actually a pretty good design. Secondly get that bike on a real freeway and have her roll the throttle on from about 60 mph to 90 mph. She won't believe how quick that beast is on a high speed roll on. I'm a little surprised at how uncomfortable she was at slow speeds. The older wings are easy to master. I've driven the maneuverability DMV parking lot test with a 200 lbs passenger on the rear. It is not difficult to handle at slow speed. Double check the steering head bearings, that maybe why she was uncomfortable at slow speeds. The fact that it wants to wobble is another sign the steering head bearings may be bad. For the best ride, make sure the suspension has plenty of air in it. Two bars down from max pressure should be good. I've owned a GL1000, A GL1200 and currently own a GL1800. Comparing the 1200 to the 1800, the 1800 is more difficult at slow speed because the center of gravity is higher. This makes it quicker into the corners, more sporting, but it doesn't just sit in the corners like the 1200 did. It also has a longer wheel base, so that makes it more difficult at slow speed. It also means you lean more in the corners. I'm happy with it, but think they should have not raised the center of gravity quite as much.

Gold wings are an incredible value-for-money will kept secret. New motorcycle prices are getting ridiculous. In Paris they use Goldwings as taxis. You will always get to the airport on time!

Fate makes strange bed fellows, Jack. I'm sure Whitney is looking back at her life thinking " Since when did the Fates figure some part of my life was going to involve Josh's frickin Dinosaur road sled.... and Why ???? !! ".... LOL . Stay Safe.

I own a 92 GL1500. I am 72 years old, did not know I was aloud to ride any thing else. When you walk in to a dealer with a grey beard the bikes that they show you are Goldwings. when asking about the other bikes they tell you the best bike for you is a Goldwing.

I had handlebar wobble at 35-40 mph on my Yamaha Venture Royale. I tried everything I could think of with no help of improvement. So I called Yamaha in Japan for a fix. Just loosen engine mounting bolts. Start engine an run engine up an down through gears several times while on center stand. Then re-tighten engine bolts too torx before removing bike from center stand. Yamaha said that lined up engine an drive line system. Following their advice stopped the wobble!!!! GW has same drive line system as venture. So you might try it?

Owned a1200 they had some with stator issues. The wobble is most likely steering head issues. Great bikes

My Guzzi LeMans II (and I think all Guzzis back then) had linked braking. Absolutely brilliant, and some of the best braking of the day.

I owned a gold wing for two weeks! It sucked! The cornering clearance available was less than the minimum required for safe reasonable operation.

Also, there's something that might be wrong with the front brakes, as well. The best way to brake this bike is to use both at the same time.

my gl1100 rides like a 70s Cadillac. squishy, floppy floaty and ….. I don’t know how to describe it. Floofy? It also pisses coolant onto your boot once it gets nice and shin baking hot.

I think this vintage of goldwing has the linked brakes where the front brake lever only grabs one of the front calipers, and the rear brake grabs the other front caliper AND the rear.

I'd remove the front calipers and get the bleeders at their highest point and bleed them, unless you have a Vacula or similar tool handy.

12:14 you slowed for that stop sign no problem, nothing wrong with the brakes ,they did their job! Mind Gdwings were built to cross continents in comfort not stop/start canyon carving.👍 You could try brake cleaner on the discs and skiff the surface of the pads with sandpaper, won't do it any harm.

Thanks for confirming my similar thoughts. I've never owned one (more of a sportbike rider) but back in that era had opportunities to ride similar wings that were great functioning bikes with only their shear size seeming weird or intimidating. Agree the brakes should be check out!!!
