A "cine lens" from the likes of 7Artisans is just a re-housed photo lens. The lens you reviewed is most likely the same optics as their $75 USD 50mm f/1.8 (T2) that also has 12 diaphragm blades. You're basically just paying extra for the body that has a longer focus throw and gearing. Optics are identical to the $75 version, they couldn't even fix the focus breathing which is a staple of cine lenses.
@dunce332 жыл бұрын
The vision series of Lenses, 50mm in this video, are actually rehoused versions of the f/0.95 lenses for the apsc/super 35 sensor, they round out to T1.05. The did just release a new set called the spectrum series, which is for full frame sensors and uses a completely different optical formula and are T2. However they may just be rehouse versions of their full frame f/1.05 lens set, at least the 50mm might be. The full frame 50mm at f1.8 would be around T2 to T2.1 when converted over (I may be wrong). So the T1.05 would actually give you about an extra stop of light at the cost of depth of field.
@katlis2 жыл бұрын
@@dunce33 The one he reviews in this video is the Spectrum 50mm T2 (f/1.8). But, 7Artisans definitely didn't invent new optics for any of their "cine" lenses. They use the same formula as Rokinon -- rehousing the same glass in different bodies (perhaps sometimes with different coatings) -- but in the end, you will have the same image as the cheapest version.
@johnnyweissmuller5838 Жыл бұрын
@@katlis I dont see the issue here, they are slightly more expensive than than their photography counterparts, obviously because ghe housing is more expensive and lower volume series. They are cool if you want something fast with character and not the super corrected perfect look. There is definitely a space for them.
@katlis Жыл бұрын
@@johnnyweissmuller5838 I was just saying that this fellow, who made a video about the difference of cine lenses "IS IT ALL HYPE?!" wasn't actually using a "cine lens." He was reviewing a $75 lens that was simply re-housed with gearing. Sure, many lens manufacturers repurpose the same glass/optics in different bodies, but on the "cinema" level, there's a lot more work involved in correcting chromatic aberration, focus breathing, etc. There's a reason most "cinema" lenses go for $20,000+
@johnnyweissmuller5838 Жыл бұрын
@@katlis You are both right and a little wrong, the canon fds were basicaly just reshoused as the k35s cinema lenses. Sigma also rehouses the 18-35 f1.8 as a cinema lens, tokina as well. Angineux did this too back in the day. Its not a rule that says a rehoused photography lens is not a ”true” cinema lens. The characteristics you listed are modern improvements to perfect the image and matching between sets. Its a convenience or look that some wants. In your logic, anamorphic lenses are not ”true” cine lenses, because they focus breathe like crazy, distort the image heavily and flares like there is no coating.

You can set the focus range on the Lumix S lenses in the camera settings. So if you want a 360 degree focus range you can set it. Also remember to set the focus to LINEAR for more accurate manual focusing. And Lumix IBIS works on any manual lens, you just have to set the lens focal length in the camera. ( which means you have to reset it every time you change lenses )

Loved the video. Personally I think Lumix changed this game a bit with the 1.8 primes. They give almost all sought after characteristics of a Cine lens. Such as, they all have similar color and look, similar weight and size, and with a Lumix camera you can set how far you want your focus throw distance, and it will show you distance markings on the back screen (in feet or meters you pick ) instead of on the lens. No smooth aperture ring though. These 1.8 primes are the most underrated part of the Lumix system. All Lumix needs to do is a add a more capable AF system to aid in social media usage and their market share will explode. Also these 1.8 panny primes are very affordable ( except the 24mm ). If you want to play Roger Deakins on the weekend, but normally just do social media or interviews, L mount will surprise you!

can you explain the meaning of *T* in the lens aperture value?
@SamHolland2 жыл бұрын
Sure… usually the amount of light that hits the sensor is measured in fstops (eg f1.8 etc) but that only takes into account the size of the aperture. There are many glass elements in a lens with coatings on which actually affect the light getting through so T stops account for all those elements and gives you a more accurate measurement.

The only advantage to the really cheap entry level Cinema glass like you have here is if you have a set of it so that it's quick to swap between lenses while being able to line up your follow focus and other things. If you want Cinema glass to make your project better it's only the last 10% and it's going to be expensive. You'd be better off picking up some vintage lenses or getting like a couple super high quality zoom lenses that will make you more Nimble as you shoot. So in the end unless you buy an entire set of these El Cheapo Cinema lenses just steer clear

Yes, cine lenses make a difference. That's not to say you can't get great images from a standard lens, but a cine lens is designed for smooth focus pulls with minimal breathing. If you have a real cinema camera, the differences between lenses becomes easily noticeable. At the lower end, such as using hybrid mirrorless cameras, the regular still lens may be good enough for a lot of people. Shooting two movies on a Sony F55 (which is a cinema camera with a global shutter) I was shocked to see how much better high-end Hawk primes were vs. pretty much everything else. Even a high end Sony prime could not compete.

There is a caveat with this particular comparison in that the cine lens was budget. A more higher-quality cine lens would have netted a bigger difference in the results. Even though you did point that out, a couple of the most important reasons for choosing a cine lens was the fringing and mechanical workmanship, which were understated. In fact, fringing and lens breathing are two of the most important factors in choosing a cine lens. That means the lens has to be manufactured to much higher precision standards. One reason for the measured T-stops as opposed to the calculation based F-stop. Since video (unlike still photography) is a motion based medium, those fine and subtle movements most youtube content providers would take for granted, are the critical separation between a videographer's review and a cinematic theatrical presentation. Take the stop/start of a zoom, for example: The photo lens would be more abrupt and jerky, while the cine lens would be so buttery smooth the movement is virtually undetectable. Creating these emotional expressions and responses are merely a few of the seemingly inconsequential things, that make a huge difference in the quality of work in cinematic content.

That’s strange. It’s the standard size. I haven’t had any issues so far. Maybe you could leave a review on Amazon 🙏🏻🎥

@@htvrs If they skip you probably have it tightened too much. As in the gears on the follow focus are too tight/too close to the tilta band gears. It's not supposed to be all the way in if you get my meaning. This is true for gears in an appliance using any kind of gear system.
