@LinkMountaineer2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say it’s not as well crafted. The first game’s final boss was way more involved than it needed to be, I think. It’s very rare that the final boss is an entire level. That’s standard for Mario or any standard platformer, but that’s not the kind of game Splatoon is. It’s cool, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think this game’s final boss is lackluster for keeping it strictly a boss fight.
@internetguy73192 жыл бұрын
@@LinkMountaineer No. The bossfight made way more sense in the original. A test of all mechanics in the singleplayer, your aim, etc. Splatoon isn't a looter shooter. It's a movement/platformer shooter.
@lunamaster1232 жыл бұрын
@@LinkMountaineer What are talking about? The final boss of Splatoon was just a single boss fight as well. The difference is that the boss fight has several phases that uses everything you learned throughout the adventure (which is what good boss fights do in general). The reason why Splatoon 2's final boss is considered worse is because there is very little variation to Octavio's attacks... even between phases. In addition, there is very little difficulty in dodging what few attacks he has. I can agree that the final boss isn't bad, but it clearly isn't anywhere near as development or interesting as the first final boss.

Back in the day, I don’t remember this final boss being very popular. “It’s the same bad guy from Splatoon 1, in the same mech.” And it felt like not a lot was done with the brainwashed Callie gimmick. But I’ve come to realize that I personally really like one aspect of this fight: the MUSIC. I think it’s one of the best examples of using music to tell a story. Phase 1, you have Bomb Rush Blush mixed with DJ Octavio’s dubstep and general sinister villain orchestra, in a way that’s chaotic and off-putting. Callie’s lyrics don’t sound like they belong in the track at all. Phase 2 opens with a heroic orchestral of Marie’s solo song from Splatoon 1, and her heartfelt singing to Callie. Then the instrumental of Bomb Rush Blush starts playing as the backing for her vocals, in a much more upbeat tone similar to how it was in Splatoon 1, showing there’s still hope for Callie. The sinister orchestral sting TRIES to come back but gets downed out by Tide Goes Out and Bomb Rush Blush at the same time. Callie’s lyrics sound much happier, as if this is her fighting back against the brainwashing rather then fighting you. Then the dubstep comes back in as Octavio tries to take back the song but gets downed out by Marie again ARGH IT’S PERFECT! And then we have Spicy Calamari Inkantation, which many say is a pale imitation of the original, but I think has more symbolic significance. The original was mostly a duet and followed the same pattern the whole way through. Here, Callie and Marie actually solo at points, and jump in and out during the chorus. It even sounds like they’re improving at times. This is less of a Callie-Marie duet and more of a TAG-TEAM, and I think this ironically shows their bond even better than the original version. You’ve got to be in-sync to duet, but you’ve got to be REALLY in-sync to pull something like this off, jumping in and out of vocals while not stepping on eachother’s lyrics. It also shows that while Callie and Marie might be pursuing their own dreams now, their friendship is stronger than ever. The Splatoon 1 Calamari Inkantation is the professional studio recording, Spicy is an improvised performance that’s MUCH more personal. (There’s also bits of the Splatfest plaza theme from 1) Anyway, that’s been me over-analysing the music of three squids fighting a DJ wasabi chef octopus in a mecha. Now this is even better after hearing the credits music, which has parts of Bomb Rush Blush and Tide Goes Out at the same time! It's also cool to think that this fight could've been very different if Callie had won Splatoon 1's final Splatfest, and we might have got Charger attacks from the boss instead of Bomb Rushes. This LP has been great so far but if what I've heard of Octo Expansion is true, it's far from over. I'll save my final thoughts for later, but your series have made me want to pick up Splatoon 3 when it drops. I normally suck at shooters but maybe I can learn this one.

Love this analysis of it, hits every point I agree with for these songs. A counter-point: I feel like the orchestral elements take way too much focus. And it in no way reflects either character. Sure there was a light usage of choir backing in Splatoon 1, but for a full string and horn filled orchestra being the primary instruments instead of the synthetic sounds Octavio was known for? Just feels odd.

@@Abunai_Gaming I was thinking about it listening to both versions and Spicy has a lot more trading out and improved segments in it. It's also cool how, despite being in jibberish, fans of the series can still recognize which "lyrics" are Callie's and which are Marie's. And random note, this boss being called "DJ Octavio Feat. Callie". When I was younger, I never knew "feat." in song titles was short for "featuring". I thought "Feat." in rap songs was a fancy word for "remixed by" or something.

Callie was feeling alone and so she started interacting with the Octarians not realizing DJ Octavio escaped his snow globe prison. However, unbeknownst to DJ Octavio, Callie's presence began to change the hearts of some of the Octarians through her music and that was especially so for Octolings. There is one Octoling in particular that was influenced by said songs which we will soon see. Captain Cuttlefish went somewhere with Agent 3 who uncovered a secret hidden from Octarians and the Inklings. Octo Expansion I think is a far more impactful story unique to Splatoon 2 personally because knowing now the events of between Splatoon 1 and 2 has lead to it.

A couple of notes from during the final battle 1)that isn't just some random truck, it's actually the one that callie and marie would preform on live in the plaza during splatfests in splatoon 1 2)while marie uses a hero charger it isn't the same as yours, it's actually the one you'd get in splatoon 1 from the amiibo along with a roller and some specially built single player stages. Nice touch(as an aside callie also hints in splatoon 1 that she's a roller main so it could be assumed that the amiibo weapons are their weapons) 3)it's implied that octavio is the source of the tentacles that control the octobosses while the zapfish power them (could also mean he makes those takoyaki attacks with his own tentacles too...ew) 4) not sure if chugga avoided bringing it up for reasons but, the Hero shot compared to every other weapon in the series so far is based heavily on an actual gun(pretty much being a recolor at lvl3), the P90. Looking at its real life counterpart it's likely the splatoon devs took notice that the unique clear magazine that goes along its top kinda looks like a water gun tank and went from there. Can't wait for the next campaign!

Also, I remember Marie having some "idle conversation" text where she wonders where Cuttlefish is, implying he's been gone longer than expected and she hasn't been able to reach him. A few details I love in this fight are the leitmotifs that pop up in the background music. In Tidal Rush and Fresh Start (at around 8:25 and 16:10 in this video), you can hear Low Tide, the song that plays when you first encounter Marie in Octo Canyon. And in Spicy Calamari Inkantation (at around 11:07 in this video) you can hear the bass synths play Fly Octo Fly. That’s right, they referenced a track *ELEVEN MONTHS* before it was released! Edit: Someone pointed out that the Fly Octo Fly bass riff was in the original Calamari Inkantation, so technically FOF is that phrase turned into a full song. The Inkling came first, not the squid egg.
@lunari64_2 жыл бұрын
I was extremely intrigued when you mentioned Fly Octo Fly so I decided to go double check... from what I can tell, that bass riff is in the original Calamari Inkantation and is just pronounced more clearly here. And it does sound quite similar to Fly Octo Fly, but I think this is more likely supposed to be the Octarian motif (which has the exact same So-Te-Do sound in it, so I definitely understand hearing it the other way) since octavio is involved in both cases, either that or a continuation of the bass that you hear before the verse in the original mix. But yeah, if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have picked up on how similar it sounds there. Really neat!

well, other than the "bug" of skipping rewards, the music is not enough to save the credits on a rewatch since squidbeats 2 is a thing. The rhythm game is even more interactive than the credits, and even without the rhythm game you can experience the track without distractions. The appeal is more the execution and interactivity but depending on how you go about 1000% for the hero weapon skins, skipping the credits might be more ideal than watching them 10 times in a row, or at least if you want the "genuine" final boss experience.

The tunes are absolutely what make that final fight so exhilirating. While both "Calamari Inkantation" and it's "Spicy" remix are pretty high on the charts for my favorite tracks in Splatoon 2, "Fresh Start" just barely beats them out due to its almost zen-like harmonics and the fact that I've always been a sucker for softer songs. I got this game for my birthday (exactly 4 years ago now!) and I remember pouring hours into both online matches and Octo Canyon. This final boss got me pretty hyped, in large part due to the awesome music! And I love the credits theme too! It really gives off this strong sense of accomplishment and the feeling of making a *fresh start* The singleplayer content and world-building definitely sets Splatoon apart from other shooters, and I really appreciate it for that.

Honestly, I like this final boss more than the first game's. Yeah, it's not as hard as the first Octobot King, but it more than makes up for that in the presentation and music. I especially like when Tidal Rush comes on, it really does make it feel like a climactic final fight to save Callie. Getting to use the Rainmaker to finish Octavio off while Spicy Calamari Inkantation plays is the cherry on top.

I'm gonna say it right now, before I even really start the video, I fucking ADORE this finale. Somehow, even though Splatoon doesn't have a super deep plot, they're able to consistently make the best climaxes. All three major climaxes have been utterly fantastic. The music, the characters, and even finishing off Octavio with the Rainmaker, I love it. I actually tear up every time I see this ending, no joke.

Okay wow, that boss fight is cool. Well-known songs thrown in and even a new take on Calamari Inkantation! Also seeing Marie jump in to help with a Splatoon 1 Hero Charger was super great and such a nice touch. I'm nearing the end of Octo Canyon on my own run of this game and now I'm even more pumped to get to this fight (kinda worried for how I'll make-do during my charger run of it but whatever!) Anywho, thanks for showing us such an amazing game (to the point where I bought it midway through this LP!) Can't wait to see what's in store next episode.

Off The Hook News Wave Part 32 Finale: Marina: *makes it to the roof* Mack! Mack: *turns around* Ah, Marina. So, you decided to come up here. I'm impressed, really, I am. Marina: Turn off the bomb and let Pearl and the zapfish go. Mack: Oh, of course. On one condition. You must agree to come back to HQ and go back to being our engineer. I even made these nice goggles for you. *pulls out a pair of hypnogoggles* These ones are pretty special, in that they will never, come, off. Not even the power of the Calamari Inkantation can ruin these. Pearl: Marina! Don't do it! Just blast him! Mack: Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you. *takes out remote* One push of a button, and that bomb goes boom. So, Marina. What's your choice? *3 minutes till detonation* *suddenly, four Octolings in shades come from behind Marina* ???: Hold it right there miss. ???: Drop the charger and start walking. Mack: Who are you? ???: Octavio saw your little broadcast and decided to send in backup. ???: He commends your effort, though it's a dangerous play. Mack: ... I see. Bring her here. *two units grab Marina and bring her close to Mack* Mack: *shades in hand* So, ready to come home? Marina: I am home. And you won't get away with this. Mack: Oh, I already have. ???: Not yet. *blasts Mack in the face with a splattershot, sends Mack flying back* Mack: What the...!? *the four Octolings take off the shades and reveal themselves to be Beax, Sally, Barbara, and Ned* Marina: Beax! You're alive! Beax: Yup. And I gotta hand it Pearl. These shades really are an exact replica. Mack: How!? I thought you died to the industrial squeegee!? Barbara: It ran out of batteries. Mack: ... COD DAMMIT! Beax: Marina, we'll hold off Mack. You disarm the bomb. Marina: On it. *Beax and the others fight off Mack* Marina: *Starts tearing into the wires* *1 minute till detonation* Marina: There's two wires here. Pink or green? Which one is it? Pearl: Pick pink! No, wait, green! Pick green! Marina: *flustered* Going green! *cuts wire* ... *bomb deactivated* Pearl: *sigh* That was close. Marina: Indeed. *unties Pearl* Mack: Ack! *falls to the ground* *Everyone surrounds Mack* Beax: It's over Mack. You've lost. Mack: Oh, have I? I may not have killed your zapfish, and that kid might have already recovered the Great Zapfish. But, I did manage to destroy something today. *looks at Marina* Your image. All of Inkopolis knows your secret Marina. You really think those freaks will accept you now, after they've been lied to for years? *looks at Pearl* And you pipsqueak. You think you're in the clear. Wait until the news paints you as harboring and protecting an enemy of Inkling kind. I may have lost this war, but this victory was oh so sweet. *pulls out a burst bomb of his opposite ink* So long suckers, I'll be back. *looks at Marina again* And who knows, I might not come back alone. *splats himself and returns to Cephalon HQ* Ned: Shrimp! He got away. Beax: Guys, get those zapfish back into place, after that, ... I don't know. Sally: On it. Pearl: Hey, Beax. Beax: Yeah? Pearl: How's about you stay by the tower? I um, have a few ideas. Beax: *looks at his friends, they nod back* Ok. Marina: ... Pearl: Um, Marina. I... You know what, I'm learning respect boundaries. I can see you need some time alone. I'll be downstairs if you need me. Marina: ... Thanks. *to be concluded*

I love splatoon 2 a normal amount so here's some extra fun trivia that I can remember offhand about this fight - the splat bombs also say aori on them! they have a little squid logo with her name underneath. the suction bombs have her eyes splatfest icon on them - once octavio has been knocked out of his ship he will just stay there forever. you can leave him squirming with his face planted in the ground for as long as you like and he won't get up - you can also just wait indefinitely as soon as you're given the rainmaker because octavio won't attack you until you get on the rails! this is a great opportunity to watch the dance in the background. Callie's hair forgets how to use physics for some of it and just kind of gravitates to the right instead. - since you did this in splatoon 1 you're probably going to cover this later / in a bonus episode but replaying the fight gives different dialogue, and iirc in the rainmaker section Marie actually uses her regular octo canyon icon rather than her squid sister outfit one which she uses for the rest of the fight, which I feel like is an oversight ?? - Callie has like a constant dance animation and stumbles when the octobot king gets hit but she is so tiny you almost never notice if you're not watching her. her dancing actually continues even after the shades are removed and verbally she's like, super disoriented. - the fight doesn't start until you approach Callie and you can ink, like, almost the entire stage with curling bombs beforehand if you just don't walk up to her. it's funny

This game was one of the first games I ever got along with my Nintendo Switch when it was somewhat new. I remember pre-ordering it during the summer and when I got my switch, it came with a toy Splatoon gun that also had an ink tank and goggles. I wasn’t used to the motion controls this game had (since I mainly play my switch while laying down) so I never got that far in the main story. I handed the game over to my sister then a few years later I don’t know if we still have it since we moved to another house. I never got to experience the beautiful end credits this game has for myself, only seeing gameplay and listening to Fresh Start. If I do find it, then I’ll give it another shot.

I absolutely loved this boss fight; I hadn't played Splatoon 1, but had watched the play through from this channel, so while I was familiar with the tennis match style, I hadn't actually _experienced_ it. Indeed, the first few times I played this battle, I didn't use the Hero Shot upgrades, so I played the first times with a Level 1 Hero Shot and Ink Tank. I'm not even sure I had the other bomb types either, though perhaps I was influenced on bombs from GameChamp's Hero Weapon Only run. I failed the first few times, though promptly won after getting the upgrades. The thing about playing this boss multiple times is the differences regarding the other weapons. The Shot, Brush, Dualies, Splatling, Brella and Slosher take multiple hits on the fists, and the Charger, Roller flick, and bombs typically use one or two. Due to limited range, the Brush and Slosher tend to take a lot longer, since the fists have to be much closer to deal damage without receiving any. Furthermore, the dodge rolls on the Dualies, the ink trails provided by Curling Bombs, the Charger, jump Roller Flick, Brella shield (when it's released), and the Splatling, and the rolling speed of the Brush are all viable tools to dodge DJ Octavio's attacks. Also, as someone who didn't exactly play a lot of the multiplayer games, I used the Hero replicas a LOT, before getting "better" equipment through Salmon Run ("better", as in equipment with 3 sub slots instead of the replicas' two). It's actually a really nice set, since it can be used even at Level 1 (at least, I sure think so; you can complete Octo Canyon without doing a single multiplayer match).

Also, the final boss mission title being Bomb Rush Blush- Tide Goes Out isn't just a callback - (I'm sure you series fans know already but for anyone that's new here) the first phase of the final boss plays an eerie corrupted mix of the song Bomb Rush Blush itself, including having Octavio remix and record-scratch in a way that makes Callie sing the Octarian Te-Do So-Te-Do motif you hear in the mission clear jingle. Then when Marie shows up, her song Tide Goes Out gets layered overtop (creating the track Tidal Rush), and then Octavio's record-scratch thing doesn't actually work, you'll hear the rhythm of it but not the pitches. It's a really neat musical detail that makes me appreciate the amount of effort that goes into the music of this game. And with the DLC content, there's more of these little musical easter eggs to come. I'll keep y'all posted. Stay fresh, stay off the hook, whichever one of those you prefer.
