I was EV training against some Wingull, then while my attention was focused at my computer, I killed the next one in the chain without giving it much thought. I look back at the screen while the fainting animation plays, and I see the blue stripes on its wings. They were green. This is in no way relevant to this video, but I wanted to share this tragedy in the hopes that it will help me move on in the grieving process.

Ah, yes, my personal favorite. I'm glad you brought DUDE on, too, as he perfectly shows that the ability recommendations are not at all exhaustive or even recommended. All Splatlings benefit a lot more from Run Speed Up than Swim Speed Up given that we have to charge our shots while standing up, and Hydra Splatlings in particular spend a *lot* of time above the ink (and on account of swim speed weight, Swim Speed Up is even less effectual for us Hydra Splatlings than it normally would be anyway). While the Hydra Splatling should be played more like a traditional sniper (by the way, side note: Splat Chargers do outrange us when they get their full-charge bonus, and speaking from experience, they charge *annoyingly* fast), the Custom Hydra Splatling is an *otherworldly* support weapon. Because you take forever and a day to charge shots, and you already outrange literally everybody who isn't a sniper-class charger anyway, just using Bubbler on yourself is pretty suboptimal (and indeed, many other players critiqued that they would have liked another Special to charge up with the Sprinkler, like the Kraken, when the weapon first came out for that very reason), *but that's not what your Bubbler is for*. With the Sprinkler to cover ground for your team, the shareable and quickly-charged Bubbler to protect them from ambushes, and a ridiculous amount of range (and, at full charge, damage per second) with which to provide covering fire, the Custom Hydra Splatling is the ultimate Mama Bear on a team, and as such, you'll be going into the trenches quite a bit more frequently than the Hydra Splatling would. Abilities I would recommend for the Custom Hydra Splatling include Comeback and Last-Ditch Effort, both incredible abilities at reducing downtime for this weapon, either from a flank and/or from the weapon's cumbersome ink usage. As DUDE showed, Run Speed Up is great on Splatlings, but don't underestimate what Special Saver and Quick Respawn could do for you, either, unless you are literally never dying (which, as both Ranked results showed, was absolutely never the case). I dunno about you guys, but I run Quick Respawn with my Custom Hydra, and of the games in which I never got splatted, 100% of them were decisive victories anyway. Not a bad value if you were to ask me. Oh, also, I run Stealth Jump and Quick Super Jump, if only to be a good example to mY TEAMMATES BECAUSE I SWEAR IF I HAVE TO BABYSIT YOUR JUMP INDICATOR ONE MORE FREAKING TIME

One thing to note about Hydra is, while it can be used as a sniper replacement on the team, it (and Heavy) against any sniper is an atrocious matchup. And considering that sniper's biggest enemy is another sniper, a team with a Hydra pretty much has to have either a sniper or a strong anti-sniper like RBPD, Grim or Bamboozler, otherwise you may as well bring a boat anchor as a weapon.

I could see a toothbrush weapon (or "Scrub Brush" if you will) having a wide but thin spread, with a Blaster-style gimmick where point-blank strikes, including roles, would do double damage. It could also have a separate variant called the "Buzz Scrub Brush" but I'm not sure how it might differ from the base.
