No lie this game gets vicious. You have to play the easier missions first otherwise the later levels will whoop you hard. The enemies start getting crazy shield bonuses, hardcore abilities, and hard counters to your strategies as the game goes along. Definitely do the leveling up in the first few easy missions. You won't regret it.
