Quick update here for prospective buyers : I gotta amend my statement at the end of the video. So for the pre-release everything was working great no bugs etc. Everything was fine. HOWEVER, devs put out a couple patches this morning that torpedo'd the game. Can't get outta the prologue if you have to reset. SO : I still think the game is rad but I'd give it a week or two and see if they sort out that bug because it is a game killer. Sorry folks! Unforseen circumstances!

"A mother does not wish to see her children disappear with her" Well that's a bit backwards considering her children killed her and themselves. It's worded as if the mother is dying of old age and killing her kids or something. The writer on this game is a "technology will save us" and "who could have predicted the end of the world would happen" sort, aren't they?
@dakaodo
@dakaodo Жыл бұрын
It's not the game writer writing their own beliefs unironically and wanting the players to believe it, but writing an ingame character's beliefs as a blindly faithful technofuturist within the game's story. We're supposed to perceive the jarring juxtaposition and soon-to-be-demonstrated falsity of that speech. That speech was written by the game designers to convey one of the game's cautionary themes to players about the dangers of being a futurist fanboy who takes human problems into space (or the future) instead of fixing them first in the present on Earth. Or the old story trope of mankind delving into Things Man Was Not Meant to Know, like Icarus and Frankenstein. If the real writers and game designers actually believed it, the gameplay and theme would be one of successfully building a bright future utopia. Which Ixion is not. Or so it seems from this preview of the game, anyway.

gotta say, one of the most difficult games I played in a long time. I managed to get quite far (without spoiling too much) and literally everything fell apart in a heartbeat. It's extremely punishing but even more rewarding when you get it on your 2nd or 3rd try. If you enjoyed Frostpunk then you will enjoy this as well.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
I'm not even sure how you're expected to adapt. The amount of airlocks and resources needed to keep up with hull repair is punishing later in the game, even before you open up other sections. And then all the things that go wrong left and right with even the slightest bit of imbalance, you'll bleed people and resources left and right, faster than you can even gather them. I had 4 airlocks going after opening the second section and I still couldn't keep up with hull repair. They just made all the factors that contribute to hull degradation too high, along with a lot of other events that give really steep consequences.

Any idea what the replayability is like? In other words, not counting the introductory narrative, will every playthrough be pretty much the same?
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
There really is none. It's somewhat linear, in that you're basically meant to play the game only one way, where you have to figure out how to build up to manage hull without bleeding resources, so it's not even really a play how you want game, you kind of have to play it how they intended, with very little room for error. So you need to build up this and that in a specific way that doesn't allow for freedom to play differently. So while where people place buildings might be different, they're essentially going to need to build basically the same amount of things at around the same time if they want to be successful, otherwise you just flop.

@@ColinTimmins That wish is going to take a lot of effort. Thus far in human history, we've never been able to really overcome our shortsighted behavior of acting based on motivated self-interest. Many of the problems we create result from acting for perceived personal gains which tend to occur on shorter time horizons, but at the cost of longer term benefits that would only be realized outside of our time horizon or desires. Similar for long term risks or costs -- if we aren't forced to mitigate them, we (individual or corporate) export those risks and costs as externalities. That is, we pass the buck, kick the can down the road, push the problem onto future politicians, workers, and generations to deal with. Then when issues blow up into major problems, we slap hasty patchwork repairs on them and keep on keeping on until the next problem becomes an immediate issue. This applies to MANY things: Internet infrastructure, unintended societal impacts of social media, infrastructure (education, transportation, etc), national energy security, geopolitical security, agricultural output, persistent environmental toxins that permeate our food and our young children's developing brains and bodies (which, even if you're not a sentimental or empathic person, at the very least means it negatively impacts their cognitive development and thus future potential productivity), climate change (not in a fuzzy treehugging sense, but in a real economic opportunity cost sense that can damage regional productivity by 5-15% in some of the most densely populated latitudes on the planet).

I realize Splat needs to maintain a relatively friendly (towards the developers) stance on these videos to keep his channel alive.... That said it's an understatement about "soft-locking" yourself if you don't do exactly what game wants. I've watched a lot of people encounter this issue and the steam reviews are full of complaints. It seems very much like they did a poor job designing/balancing some aspects of this game even at 1.0 launch time.

I hope that what some have described as 'gameplay on the rail' is basically the "stage one tutorial" followed by a "stage two tutorial-lite" segments of the game. And that conclusion is made only because they had not reached the point at which the game opens up into a sandbox - once the recovery from the initial set of cataclysmic events is accomplished. I say that because the idea of having a sand-box-ish game to play - once you set out on the main, unfettered, gameplay of exploration - while searching for a suitable exoplanet - excites me and I would think, many others. Speaking for myself; I think that there are three factors which would make this gorgeous and seemingly well thought-out game a *massive* hit with gamers such as myself: 1) If the playable space beyond Sol's system is randomized, at least somewhat, each playthrough 2) a regular stream of expansion DLCs is going to come out. Each of which always adds more possibilities to that playthrough-randomization (and maybe add a greater volume of space to explore, at *least* once) 3) Ensure that the tech tree includes (or is expanded to contain) true decision gates via which the players' decisions preclude or limit the development (or full development) of other technology and also both expand to offer new gameplay options while precluding others. IMHO, this would add massive replayability via the creation of new challenges and the introduction of subtle (but significant) variations via how the player's choices affect how other tech can be used, developed, and how those choices alter the consequences of other decisions. This would create a new, randomly shifting 'maze' of possibilities via those related tech variations and consequences as the player deals with "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" found out in that semi-randomized sandbox volume of space experienced upon each new playthrough. Please, reader: If you appreciate what I shared about my thoughts, please *thumbs-up* this post. Also, please consider a *reply to this post* to share what you think. I am especially interested in what my fellow gamers think about any of the questions below... • What do *you* think about what I shared and proposed above? • Did I leave out something you believe is important? • Do you believe, for your own enjoyment, that something I offered is just not needed, or worse, would turn you completely off? • Do you think I am completely wrong about any or all of what I shared - based on your own expectations, desires, and gameplay preferences? Thanks!

Its weirdly surreal - and I'm totally biased - but this is a solid, though fairly straight-forward premise. A bit over a decade ago, a few friends and I wrote a short story series about a scientific vessel called the Hyperion which accidentally time-traveled into a future where the Sol system is utterly wrecked. Human civilization had long-since collapsed; simultaneously going (locally) extinct while fleeing in a mass extra-solar exodus from widespread climactic and social upheaval. Vaguely recall them being accosted by xenos in the process, but that's a whole other series. The amount of parallels between our fun little project and Ixion is... Kinda nutty, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the storyline thus far. Makes me wonder what might've become of our project if we had gone forward with development.

Had it been a typical $60 we would expect more, but (while on sale) it's about half that price. Bear in mind that the devs are actively removing bugs and working on the game balance. So, what we see here is no where near the finish product.

I think this game is pretty bad. It's like Frostpunk so I wouldn't call it a city-builder survival game, it's more a puzzle game with a golden path that solves the game regardless of the run because it has no real random elements. It's also fairly buggy, poorly balanced, and I've seen a few glitches. I refunded it myself and will not be picking it back up. I want to warn people away from this game if I can. Even if one person chooses not to buy it I'll consider this comment worth it.

Unfortunately Dwarf Fortress is out and has been holding my attention but this looks interesting. Your commentary made me LOL a couple times. Sorry about your Playstation....

Frostpunk in space. Straight up. This game sucked me in with the cinematic. The depiction of the theoretically possible Alcubierre drive, doing what it would theoretically do if you engaged it that close to a planet, hard sci-fi *chef kiss*

I think I read that this is made with Unities new data oriented technology stack, which is a data oriented approach to game design, allowing for better, much more efficient utilization of the computers processing power and memory (really rough translation, but if you like game design it's a very cool concept) and this should leed to a very performant game.

I will say Bebop did "we blew up the moon" better. But that said, it's being compared to Cowboy Bebop, that's not bad company.

Tried getting it to launch for 4 hours straight but sadly wasn't meant to be... Sick and tired of games being completely broken on release

Bit of a shame this game is as linear as it is, missed opportunity for some space exploration fun. If it wasn't like riding a ticking bomb I think it would've faired better.

I think you're wise not to compare things to Dwarf Fortress. It's definitely its own thing.

I want to like this game more but the resource management aspects when you've unlocked more sections is unnecessarily tedious. I've only played 6.5 hours so maybe there is a tech upgrade or something that works that out but I haven't seen that yet.

The music of this game is what sold me on it. I am not the biggest fan of games like Frostpunk but I get so immersed when a game has a badass soundtrack.
