They only knew the science behind what happened, but only at an extent. After all, they didn't expect their creature-like-child to come back from the dead and become a male. Also, just because she is impregnated by her transgender son-like creature, that doesn't mean the product won't also be a fail.

I actually think how Dren interacts with both of her "parents", while weird, is fascinating. She's not just part human, she has a lot of different DNA in her entire being and only a small part of that is regular human. Of course she'll fall victim to her instincts due to that. Attracting her "father" with gestures, and perhaps even pheromones that make him do what she wants. Her open aggression towards Elsa can be explained with the way she treats Dren as the latter grows as well as seeing her own "mother" as a sort of competition for her "father's" affection. The turning into male, I do find weird, but hey Dren isn't a normal being to begin with. Now that he transitioned to male, the aggression towards other males can be explained the same way as Dren's aggression towards Elsa. Now forcing himself on her, idk about it, but it may just be purely out of instinct at this point.

There's a kind of fish that always starts off as female - meaning all eggs hatch female, then after surviving for some time, maturing and having babies, females reach a certain age where they literally change their gender and body shape to that of a male fish, then the new male goes to face off against their ex-mate. The two duke it out fish style until one is defeated, then the boss goes to make more babies.

the parts are missing that are important Elsa is showing many disturbing ways she acts, and shows many abnormal ways she was raised by her strange mother -before Dren is made -she uses her own cells to splice in -which she already had in the lab - she had clearly planned from the start to use it -when they manage to splice a new creature she acts disruptive and will go against all reason to protect her new "child" -she has compromised the experiment already she had planned to have a child this way from the start -when they arrive to the house where the barn is to keep Dren hidden -it's Elsa's Mother's house, when they walk around the house we see bare rooms and we see Elsa's childhood room Clive is surprised how disgusting and bare the room is -not in the least looking like a child's room - more like a prison cell - Clive asks "I thought your mom left your room like it was? to which Elsa responds - "She did" -we see more of how Elsa was raised in a disturbing way by her mother in the remote house, she acts colder and more disturbing -when Elsa gives Dren makeup -she tells Dren that her mother didn't allow makeup - "My mother didn't let me wear makeup, she said it Debased women. Who doesn't want to be debased every once in a while?" "look how pretty you've become, you have to learn how to be a grown-up" just before she finds Drens drawing of Clive and gets annoyed, she finds Dren with a cat and brutally takes it away from the crying Dren Elsa coldly says "can't always get what you want, it's part of growing up too" -Elsa shows she is jealous of Dren getting infatuated with Clive and punishes Dren -who is innocent in all this -Clive is angry with Elsa too, and feels bad for Dren, even tho he tried to kill Dren a couple of times when it was still small, when Clive confronts Elsa that she put her own DNS in Dren she acts disturbing as if she made no error and planned for all of this -Elsa tries to get into Drens good side again and presents her back the cat -Dren is Furious so she kills the cat in front of Elsa as rebellion -When we Dren open the door -her face is so full of glee -she is finally free -then Elsa knocks her out over the head -Elsa imprisons Dren -strips her naked and straps her down on a table like an animal and cuts off her tail -Elsa is no longer treating Dren like her daughter, she dehumanizes Dren Clive is horrified when he finds Dren naked strapped on a table and Elsa is cold and acts as if this is how it's supposed to be -Now she acts like a cold scientist Elsa switches from nice to cold all the time -Dren is kept imprisoned, is mutilated, and frustrated, tries many times to escape - and she dies imprisoned - never to see the outside, so when Dren changes sex like every experiment Elsa and Clive had before - seriously how did all their experiments have changed their sex unknowingly is a fail on all of their account -Dren kills other males and then mates Elsa -this is the only thing Elsa should have already know -since this is how their experiments acted like *Elsa is the monster, she deserves no pity* she made her own "baby" experiment, experimented on her, brutalized her, kept in hiding, bullied her, when the child has shown rebellion she stripped it naked and experimented on it more like an animal in imprisonment, she treats her like a thing after first giving it motherly care -how untrustworthy all the time she has a defense of "but the experiment can bring the cure to many illnesses" *now Elsa will have another "baby" experiment - this is a repeating cycle*

I like how illogical this movie is. They portray the males as aggressive and females as calm, while in the animal kingdom it is the females that are actually the aggressive ones. For example the lioness does all the hunting and killing for the pride and protect the male, while male lion just chills. Also praying mantis females devour the males after mating, gross.
