Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas as well. I believe you might be talking about my dad's restaurant in Detroit. Ham's Restaurant, the only two soups were bean soup and pea soup. Enjoyed Ep. 8, split pea soup.

Happy 4th at this time of year ! We love Navy Bean and Split Pea soups from scratch. The key is to find good fresh ham hocks etc. and lots of time simmering on the stove. Sometimes we call the Navy Bean soup "Military" soup so that all of the guys and girls get credit ! LOL. Some call the base a Mirepoix without the celery. I like the idea of the bacon grease for the smoked flavor to kick up the ham flavor.

you know, when i was growing up , i hated pea soup . there were a few other dishes i guess i got burned out on. never realizing it was a matter of my mom trying to feed six kids on a shoestring . palates change . now , not only do i love pea soup , when i make it , i make some for a good friend of mine that probably misses it for some of the same reasons. along with those other dishes i grew tired of at a young age, pot roast is a great treat now. anyway, wish mom was around now so i could thank her for all those dishes and her hard work. so ... if your mom is still around ... let her know while you still can . if she's gone now , try to cook some of those dishes and share them with family and friends , thanks jack , for reminding me ... it's more than just food sometimes .

Already have. It's a shame though because when you cook American food its fine but you never do other country's cuisine justice because you never take the time to research how it should be done properly. I am sure however that you are a good man and I wish you all the best.
