Quick clarification - 1:35 I say class with portals, I just mean my class/faction with the portals is the most overpowered, all classes have portals just different abilities. Game is fun overall, not huge on the abilities, gunplay is good, movement is like Titanfall 2 which I love. One nitpick that I have about Splitgate is how the portal surfaces look. In Portal (the game) the surfaces that you can put portals on have a noticeable color contrast to the surfaces that you can’t place portals on. Splitgate is so colorful though that the “portalable” surfaces seem to sometimes get washed out in all the colors. They don’t immediately catch your eye which somewhat reduces a player’s awareness of where they can portal to at a moment’s notice or where an enemy portal might pop up.

i think adding a cooldown to each portal would be a good idea. It would slow down the pro players, but it would also give others a chance to retaliate against them. Everyone should have access to the portal guns as it's the whole idea of Splitgate, it shouldn't be confined to a single class. Also, a single player campaign would help to get people invested in the world of Splitgate and potentially retain players.

Played the beta for 3 days so far. Performance wise, pretty good! It ran a pretty good 144fps when I had everything at high. Now gameplay. Gunplay is still very solid from SG1. I feel I’m a bit of the opposite. The inherent portal places are way more spread out, making harder to make some solid portal choices on the fly, and as a result, there’s been a bigger emphasis of abilities. I’m hoping with the feedback, it goes the other direction. I’m generally okay with the abilities, as long as have the main thing be, “Oh hey, I can use my portals effectively”

I feel like I'm not entirely opposed to the Faction system, honestly. I did see a lot of people playing Aeros, of course, but in the majority of my games there tended to be a mix which led to some neat plays. That being said, out of 3-4 years playing Halo 3 the most I could manage was about a 1.2 KD, so shooters are one of those that I like but I don't think I'll ever really be great at. I do understand that that means my own experience with this game is going to differ pretty widely from someone at the top of the matchmaking pool. I was definitely blown away by that clip of portal usage even after they literally reduced the number of portal surfaces on the maps compared to the original game. When I play this it brings back my memories of getting good at Tribes Ascend with a similar visual style to the Wipeout series, and it's giving me almost a yearning for this game to succeed. I REALLY hope the next Alpha brings not just changes to these modes and mechanics based on feedback though, but also some slightly bigger maps with 8v8, more power weapons, and just generally the right mix for fun chaos like back in the Halo days.
@Nadestraight5 ай бұрын
I've played 10+ hours of the Alpha now and said many of the same things in my own video. Yet, some people fail to understand why we say these things... I can see many in this videos comments section too. Yes, Portals are Splitgates identity, but when your games core mechanic creates a skillgap so large that it may deter the larger audience you're seeking, and also a terrible viewing experience, you need to question if this mechanic is good for the longevity of the game. I played almost 1000 hours of the original, I won tournaments in Splitgate 1, and I can confidently use the portals. However, I am a realist, and I understand that the larger gaming community may not be as accepting to the mechanic, and don't want to spend hundreds of hours perfecting it. This is what people fail to understand. This company needs to make money, therefor they need the biggest audience possible. A couple thousand players who love portals isn't going to achieve profit. it's as simple as that.
@Deliveredmean425 ай бұрын
Which is strange. I thought folks are thinking with Portals since... well the Portal games. Halo, Titanfall, Mass Effect, Borderlands, and Gears of War all share something in common. They have a campaign. I'm not saying that it is a necessity but it does make a difference- especially when looking at the casual player base scene. Call of Duty has killed their campaign scene as they lack focus on that aspect of the game now. COD used to be well known for their campaigns. This is something to consider when delving into making Splitgate 2. It can be extremely challenging to find a way to evade a toxic player base and draw more that only care about the competitive scene. I love competitive shooters and I agree with the things you said in this video. I'm really glad you pointed out that not giving want the majority of players want would likely cause the game to die again. Plug and play isn't much of a focus anymore and while I can understand why- I see without it though it kills the wholesome parts of many of our beloved games. Have a generation grow up only on the version of the game with the most micro transactions and some of the most competitive shooting scenes- you can easily see a toxic fanbase grow out of that. If you look back at the games we first played we were terrible at them. The same can be said today for kids learning how to play competitive shooters. I don't want to hear a kid cry because he doesn't know how to win. Also you don't want to get dunked on. It's a very difficult thing to balance when everyone is shoved into one main style of play- a competitive shooter. As much as I love and hate the game Overwatch, you can see a wide variety of players. Those that only play arcade and the game browser. You also get those who only queue for comp. My whole point is if you don't account for the casual scene that wants to go to the forge to play with their buddies on the weekend, then your game won't live as long. I think Splitgate did more things right than wrong but I find it difficult to compete with AAA games if they only stick to their niche. We've already gotten big it's time to branch out.

The reduced portal surfaces feels like a response to the pro players over-utilizing the portals, but that's obviously not addressed the problem here. The simple solution is to bring portal surfaces back, but make a 1 or 2 second cooldown between each portal connection.

As someone who never play SG1. I think the alpha is fun arena shooter with UT vibe, I like it a lot. Ability to me is fun and when you said it doesn’t matter when you master portals, I agree and that’s a good thing. Portal is SG identity, abilities shouldn’t be so OP than portal. Abilities/loadout should add to the experience, they need to be creative with it. The class identity is something I’m unsure. I think high-tier end game should have full customization regardless of which class you should. The idea of class generally is to role playing and prevent info overload early on. However, splitting into 3 solid classes will hurt productivity in the long run, see Destiny2. As you have to always offer something to all three classes at all time or they’d feel left out. I don’t see SG2 being hero shooter, far from it. Hero shooter double down on speciality and personality of each character. You can’t go that route without losing portal identity. I think the team is exploring new flavors of the product rather than inventing new product altogether. Now I’m gonna go look for portal guide to get ready for beta.

From what I've played of this Alpha though, the classes (not heroes, since everyone wants to call this a "hero shooter") give just enough switch up to gameplay mechanics, plus the improved gunplay and movement system, that I think this game has much more potential than the first one. The possibility of it flopping shortly after release is still high, but I will definitely give it my time if they continue to update it regularly

The class ability thing is a interesting problem, Off the top of my head I think most hero like shooters struggle with the class ability because they are largely infantry vs infantry in smallish maps, so there just isn't a lot of variables in the match to shake things up. In the older Battlefield games classes had a verity of tools to deal with different problems and with a range of vehicles and lots of players it created a lot of variables to deal with, for example: so you might have tank problem for a bit but then you have a snipers the next. Like I said just off the top of my head, but I think match variables are too few in most hero like shooters.

One of the biggest things people wanted in splitgate one was wallrunning the potential for wall running in this portal game would be huge.

While I enjoyed the original Splitgate, my biggest concern about so far from seeing the sequel trailer and gameplay here in your video is that my worst fears are coming to pass. The first was aesthetically closer to Halo compared to Destiny 2, but gunplay wise it really did just feel like Destiny 2 PvP but actually balanced... One thing many devs today don't seem to understand is that the biggest thing that made Halo so popular and so accessible was the movement speed wasn't that fast, as console shooters were deliberately made slower on purpose so controllers would be easier to use in them when compared to what WAS popular at the time, which was Quake and Unreal... and even CS, which is still best experienced on K&M is still significantly slower than those... another thing that made it more accessible compared to CS is that in most gamemodes, headshots with precision weapons did not matter until the shields were either nearly down or completely down, exceptions to this rule if you understood bleed through damage and the importance of explosive and power weapons is what separated the good player from the bad as this is where the strategy really came into play... Splitgate only has the single regen health lifebar where, like in Destiny 2, headshots matter at all times, but only just enough to make the TTK faster if you land all headshots in a row without missing... even with the higher magnetism, because the head is a smaller target, it means it's WAY easier for the average player to be much more inconsistent with their shots, leading to a lot more lost engagements because they missed a headshot, when in Halo, a bodyshot would've more than sufficed and kept the playing field even... add to that the faster movement and jump speed and mechanics, as well as the additional abilities and perks with the portal traversal itself, and now you have an incredibly sweaty FPS that will harshly punish you for just going for body shots most of the time just to not miss at all, because of the fast movement speed, and this basically means the people who are gonna be good at clicking heads are gonna utterly crush it, which is gonna lead to complete and total upsets, which means players quit out of frustration... one way to alleviate this will be with a ton of casual modes or by having modes where you can't sprint, slide or jetpack and the only way to really traverse quickly through a map is by using portals... another way to potentially alleviate this is to add Reach Style Overshields (the Pre TU ones) where it will make it so that no weapon except power weapons and explosions can deal damage to HP until the shield is completely drained, which means TTKs will get a bit higher and getting headshots won't be as important until the shields are down... I personally still love Halo CE, 3 and pre TU Reach because of how their shield and damage mechanics work, they add layers of strategy without making the game impossibly hard to enjoy after a hard day of work...

the reason me and my buddy's stopped playing Splitgate 1 was because something changed with matchmaking (or maybe everyone's skill level rose significantly above ours) because in the beginning the matchmaking felt very Halo-like. There was a balance to the lobbies, some matches we'd stomp the other team and then vice versa with a good amount of close/competitive matches happening in between. Later in the game's life cycle we hopped back on and every single match was an insane sweatfest with everyone knowing the optimal portal angles. It felt like every casual game we played was basically comp and after getting our heads stomped in for a few days we moved on. Hopefully in this sequel they revert whatever matchmaking changes they made in the first game.

I wish they had the art style of Splitgate 2 but the gameplay of Splitgate 1. Being able to spawn with classes and having the ultimate ability completely changes the feel of Splitgate 2.

Personally I really liked the first game! The portal mechanic was soooo fun and me and my brothers had a blast playing it! The only reason we stoped playing was be cuz the devs said they where going to stop developing the game to make this sequel so we will 4sure be back playing when this launches

Splitgates skill gap is only an issue if the casuals leave. If the casuals leave then anyone new will only face sweats. I also think the abilities should be apart of your class and you can pick and choose perks and abilities yourself to make something intrinsic to you

6:40 Koth has longer spawn timers the longer the game goes on, this is why you should wait to capture the hill once you kill most of the enemy team as well. (Cause progress to capture the point does not reset ever, so a team can swoop in at the last second and steal a point) If spawns were faster i think the mode would be less fun, imo. Not a problem, you actually get rewarded for kills and punished for dying in this mode, instead of mindlessly respawning and rushing the zone...

When I was playing it, I had two issues. 1. No controller support because I'm a controller main and have been since day 1, and every time I changed my sensitivity settings, it felt like it was either too sensitive or not enough. 2. No noob friendliness because I went in just as it came out and was still trying to figure out the jump booster, my abilities, and how portals worked, and I didn't even get a chance to get used to everything because I was LITERALLY JUMPED by the enemies and rage quit. Rather would play The Finals, at least I understand that and actually LEARNED how to play it and enjoy it.

If portals are overpowered, perhaps they need to have a cooldown so you can't just spam. Maybe like a gun cooldown where you can shoot them fast, but say you shoot 5 in a row back to back, you overheat? I think Splitgate could benefit a lot from not being a hero shooter and being more like Halo where you have to pick up abilities and guns, just in my opinion.

i really hope they just end up making it a splitgate 1 remake instead of a whole new game. i dont like that there are 2 OP weapons on the map instead of just having every single weapon on the map like a classic arena shooter. i also think that the class shooter idea is gonna work, it has been done to death at this point and i would love to see a shooter that doesnt try adding unfair advantages like these.
@samuelantoniocastillomeza50345 ай бұрын
Splitgate 2 reminds me of the time Quake 3 introduced abilities and extra perks with the Team Arena expansion. Hope the arena shooter vibes are reinforced instead distancing too much of them.

I'm really glad to hear and see that the movement class is similar to Titanfall 2, but the other classes seem redundant and gimmicky. I really wish they would've made the portal and movement character the only character, with some light ways to tweak him rather than making it into a fundamentally different class / character like overwatch and destiny. One of the classes be way better than the others, and who in their right mind wants to play a support class or deal with wallhacks in a movement / halo like game?
@KingKrouch5 ай бұрын
I really enjoyed the first game, but based on what we've seen so far, this game really needs legacy maps, dedicated server tools, and a proper level editor to stay relevant. We need more Unreal Tournament style arena shooters around, and the first game reminded me more of that than Halo if I'm being honest. Halo is more of a slow and strategic kind of game, while Splitgate is very frantic and fast paced.

I think split gate needs a specific style/personality , like halo has the spartans and elites, titanfall has the titans and pilots, tf2 has the mercenaries and overwatch has the heroes
@cypherlt3695 ай бұрын
the main reason i dropped splitgate was because it was just halo with portals. it’s a cool concept but if they fleshed it out more and gave the game its own identity beyond that, it probably would have helped out. like bro, the guns are literally all just more sauceless reskins of halo guns.

I think this is just them showing some of the variety available in game and not necessarily the competitive scene. I'm sure they can make ranked game modes where it's all portals and no abilities. But for everyone else just jumping on, they can choose something familiar from another game or concept before dipping into using portals. Adding abilities will help diversify combat around objective based game modes. But in terms of all this available all the time, it isn't the spaghetti the fan base was ready for when it's all buried under hero shooter/destiny ingredients. I'm keeping my eye on this, because it may still be more fun than what else may be afoot

Played the alpha. As you said, abilities felt like some useless over complication... Found myself using them just because i had them there, the best solution in every team fight is always to shoot and use portals. Idk, i feel like gameplay would be "cleaner" without them. Gunplay and movement is a 9/10, game has potential but something is off

A bit part missing from splitgate 1 that i really hope is present in this game is incentive. I think splitgate 1 died off so fast because there was no incentive to keep playing the game, no rewarding feeling for winning or sweating, amazing gameplay with no rewarding features. They had loot drops but they were very incredibly stingy with how to acquire them which i believe turned away alot of people

If they add new factions and abilities and more maps and more things that will increase the different ways a game will play out, will increase the lifespan of the game
