With the five drill limit, I usually do three drills in a row like you've done, and two placed opposite in a cross, but three blocks apart (one block space between the center drill and outer drill. That way I have one row of three drills packed tight, and one row a little more spaced out, and I rotate the whole ship while boring. The tight row catches all the voxel that I'll be driving into while the spaced row digs a little more space around the ship.

Or you simply use a rotor with a (one-sided, if necessary) arm - and if you want, you can even change the length of the arm using pistons, allowing you to drill an inner and an outer circle area. Automate with timer blocks and another piston or two advancing the drills, retracting, switching to the larger diameter, and advancing (slower) again.

Ok, I'm more enthused about this series than your other SE series. Its the starting on a new server (or private server with friends) with no (or very basic) mods fresh in a survival pod, lost in space that's the best part of SE for me. I've done it countless times. The scratching out a living at the beginning is my favourite part. By the time I end up in a newly designed mega factory ship, i tend to get bored, never finish it, and start again fresh somewhere else.

On the standard star system map, Fake Earth is located EXACTLY at GPS coordinates 0,0,0. So you can make a GPS point and manually input the coordinates. I also do similar with a GPS point at 0,-3000000000,0 for North and 0,3000000000,0 for South, because the sun follows the XZ plane, so the Y-axis is also the North/South axis. It's extremely useful when you're using solar and/or wanting a specific latitude on a planet/moon.

Should definitely swing by Keen server CA#2 sometime. There's a few large and interesting bases there and many of them allow visitors (even to spawn in), and it even has a public trading station called the "En Route" and a domed base on the Moon called "Lovell City". The En Route station is the oldest on the server at this point, and has been a popular gathering location for 1.5 years. Mithridates Rex, the proprietor of both those bases, is an old veteran of the Sigma Draconis "Escape From Purgatory" server, and appears in chat in a few of those videos. His faction has some magnificent vehicles, and the server regularly polices itself to prevent piracy.

I really don't need airtightness there as the cockpit only has 1 door so it's mostly a way to bleed out oxygen. I wasn't that pushed for time but was happy with how quickly things came together :)

Splitsie, I love the way your mind works! This ship is a hodge-podge, hobbled together cluster of engines and 02/H2 Generators (not to mention, small-grid large storage), but it all just works together and I can see how you're going to make the whole ship look good once you get a reactor on board. I can tell that I'm going to enjoy this series. I'm so glad I found your channel. Now if I could just stop building bricks myself! LOL Edit: I tried to this EXACT thing, with the merge block and an Asteroid, but I turned my ship into a station (because I thought I had to) and so even after I disconnected the merge blocks (and the ship wasn't touching anything anymore) the game said, "Error, cannot turn into Ship" So my Ship became an Asteroid... Go figure. I had to revert to a save from like 6 hours earlier that day!
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 ай бұрын
Oh no, that's a long way to wind back. If you run into that again, you should be able to use the convert to ship button (it's in the same spot as the station one in the menu) to convert back. If it's refusing to do so make sure that every block of your ship is completely clear of the asteroid e.g. a slope block needs the entire cube space clear

Just a note, the Keen servers do spawn new spawn ships within 20-50 km of existing players in space. Also, the Strong Unknown Signals will spawn within 20 km, I think, of a player that is online in space. So, I kind of give people an idea where others on the server are. Also, the server will still run your grids while you are offline. That means if you are not online and run out of power, they will be deleted. But, the plus side is that the cobalt can be refined while you are offline.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
Yup, I'm aware of all those things - it's why I really need to get that jump drive so I can leave the area of a strong unknown signal when needed :) Fortunately being as far out as I am, the challenge with finding me can become one of getting there even if you work out where :P

You can do a cross shaped drill set up with just 4 drills and still mole (tunell) mine. Leaving a spot for a pressurized cockpit (or just the helm console)in the middle, allowing you to place corner lights at the front. The suit lights a still better thou. And a small large grid hydrogen tank will last surprisingly long on a dedicated hydrogen powered cross shaped mining ship.

Found the direction he's traveling; Since he's so far away, there's barely any parallax, so you can use the skybox as a reference for direction. The unit vector direction he's traveling in is (-0.9286153, -0.37076, -0.01457) and if you negate it, and multiply it by his distance,(if the "Home" marker is at the origin/earth) you get his approximate position. His position where he ended the video is probably close to (228495916, 9122961, 3569672). Do keep in mind, his marker is most likely not at the origin, and could be only just close enough to visually see the planets. There's also a bit of error in the measurement, about 53.3 arcseconds. So just keep in mind that the further you go out the further you'll have to search from the unit vector line. The current width of the area you'll have to search, at the distance Splitsie is at, is about 32Km around. Good hunting ;)

It's an interesting approach. I find that by grinding down all of the Ramp blocks and thin wedges on the top, I have room to fit 4 solar panels. Then by aligning my ship on the Y axis of the universe, as long as everything but my Survival Kit is powered off, I can leave the ship unattended for days, and come back to fully charged batteries. That's usually the first thing I build on a new space pod. Later on I will add the basic production and usually a rotor drill head. Storage will usually have to wait until I find cobalt, but I like the trick of small grid storage. I'll remember that for next time.

Wow, I forgot the build progression was even a thing. Bit of a throwback. You can space out large ship drills by one pipe to get maximum mining area with max mining speed. Thus you wouldn't have to shrink your ship at all Upping the radius and lowering the fall off of the spot light also would light up everything at the front of your ship

My experience with spacing large grids drills in the past has been the occasional doom voxels being left behind and badly damaging my ship 😐

If that was in a modded save that could be the cause. There are a few mods that can kinda break asteroids ore spawning so they only have nickel and occasionally silver

@@Splitsie No, I use vanilla until I learn all the mechanic. As I said last time, I bought this game very late, just a month ago, but It hooked me deeply. I wasted almost 40h to make a human spy frigate from Hegemony, but... I still can't automate it how I want and can't set a proper targeting system either, both due to my lack of knowledge and a bit of space limitation enforced by this ship low profile and its "catamaran shape". Nevertheless thank you for reply and an advice.

You had a nice smooth time on that server. Quite often when I play on keen official its a laggy nightmare. The connector small grid cargos is absolutely genius man. I am kicking myself for not thinking of that! Maybe start with the outlier planets once you reach the center. Earth/Mars/Luna/Europa are usually hotbeds for player pirates!

My general rule with H2 engines is to have at least two O2/H2 generators per H2 engine. I also take this approach when building H2 ships, where each large H2 tank should have at least three O2/H2 generators (preferably 4). Not the fastest, but that's a good rule of thumb if you want a net positive in H2 production under normal operating conditions, while minimizing power consumption. The new event controller, of course, helps even more with power management, as O2/H2 generators drain a good amount of power while active.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
That used to be close to my approach, but it seems like you can cut it much more fine than in the past so I'm keen to see if I run into any major issues doing it this way 🙂

Tbh what I do is replace the front corners with drills and one in the middle and place the b-assembler connected to the cargo container and the refinery on the back o2/h2 gen, and build everything in a sleek way so I can hide in asteroids when I’m off or from pirates

I tend to start the same way. In space. But I like to make the drills 5 wide. Making the ship spin when I drill makes a very big hole to pass through.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
I think if I was playing solo I'd like building it that way but with my lag to the server spinning is challenging at best - with the slow rotate speed the server often refuses those small movements :(

for stop the kidnapped engineer from demolishing the house, maybe you can put a block above the cryochamber and set up a gun behind the block, that way the engineer has a big meal to eat when he wakes up....XD

Yo Splitsie, I tend to add the drill on to the survival kit, removing only the one right side angled window, it still keeps it airtight despite a small visible gap. I also add a cryopod to the opposite side of the cockpit, symmetrical with the survival kit.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
I don't see much value in keeping airtightness for the cockpit (seems a good way for me to accdientally waste lots of air going in and out the single door) so I like to rip up the roof and get materials from there too :D

A new event control block to turn on the engines when battery% is below 25% and turn off engines above 75% (for example) would help save the ship when your offline, right? A pair could also control the O2H2s with tank fullness.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie Жыл бұрын
I may do something like that in the future, though in general I want the batteries completely full when I log off and not rely on the event controller to keep the ship from being deleted - I'm just not sure I trust it enough

Good Luck Splitsie! If you're going to hide out in rocks, I might suggest changing your ship's exterior to match the color to the asteroids you're hiding in. Snap off the lights and engines and snuggle in close. Might give you an edge in hiding from the hungry marauders that inhabit those servers lol.

lol potentially, though the main thing is to find a hole in a fresh asteroid and hide there - voxel deformations and the like can be spotted way too far away :P

Hey Splitsie, we the Pickle Pirates from Us server 3 challenge you to war, we would of course let you build up your faction first. We haven't had much competition for a bit, in case you're wondering why and it doesnt have to be a series or anything. Also I recommend getting friends to join you if you're up to it. This goes for anybody else who feels like challenging us aswell, we need a challenge We enjoy the videos, keep up the fun work.
