When I was in high school back in the mid 70’s I worked for a guy that had started his own shop after working at an international dealership. Worked on a lot of them old tractors . I could have split a 806 blindfolded we did so many. Things were so simple back then.

I bought a 986 new in 1980 and kept it four years. Put about 2000 hours on it. It had the 466 engine in it I think. It never gave me any problems. Always cranked and ran hot or cold. Lot of people down the 86 series because of the cab but mine always kept me warm or cool. Love the comment on the reverse starter...

My grandpa bought a 986 about then, too. That tractor just flat worked. Dad kept it running until he retired a half dozen years ago.

Love these tractors. We have two of them. Planted 500 acres of beans with one of them this year. We have nice cab kits in them and the A/C works good on both. They're not quite as comfortable as the new ones but still very comfortable.

You're amazing Warren! I just retired from a major AFB in Ohio and voleentered for snow removal in the winters, used to run the those IH's on 2 ,12 hr shifts 24,7, not to mention they mowed grass on the airfield all summer! They were used and abused big time But rarely had problems! I could roll a 12 hr shift plowing snow with a 10ft blade and use about 11 gal. Of fuel!! Take care! Love your videos! 🤙🤙

Got a bunch of this generation IH working good on my farm. We have the 56's , 66's and 86's series. I love them. When you wear out an engine you can get a IH combine engine as replacement. Good ones will usually run around $4000. Lot cheaper and faster than a full rebuild.

I worked at a case IH dealership for several years. These use to be my bread and butter tractors. I think I could do a clutch or a TA with my eyes closed. Thanks for the memories. Good video

In Europe 956 n 1056 were some of the most bombproof tractors. We put closer to 9000 hrs on a 956. Apart from maintenance, only swapped a crankshaft bearing plus several rear axle main bearings (not the best for duals).

I love the old Farmall IH equipment. In fact, I was driving two different Farmalls this morning that are each more than twice my age! Built to last. I dearly miss the days of solid steel instead of plastic. Warren, you would be welcome with open arms in western Wisconsin. I've spent quite a bit of time on an IH 1066 and that was honest horsepower.

Great job! The 66 and 86 series IH tractors were the workhorse tractors back in the early 70's & 80's with the DT436 engine. Grew up as a kid on the farm working on them.

Had 2 826's. One hydro that had the transmission that the neighborhood knew unique sound. Just sold my gear drive. First tractor l learned to drive. I think the 1066 was the best model like Deere's 4440. Good old well built machines! Great fix Warren!🏆

I grew up around the 560 ,706 ,806 , and the neighbors had the bigger one , I don’t remember the number but used 2 times a year for chopping silage and molboarding it had a big v 8 twin stacks ,it sounded beautiful and I loved the way it smelled when it was working

Have an 886. Always a good runner. Had to have the engine rebuilt last year after one of wet cylinders developed a pin hole leak and all the coolant dumped into the oil. Nice to work on, no computer needed.

When I was younger , corn binder use to make a dozer , gas start -diesel run , a small example of an improvement , instead of a bunch of dreamed up add on unnecessary garbage that costs much more and creates many more problems , an improvement helps the machine last longer ,not cause even more problems .....

Not judging or be critical just sharing. A freind at work was a dealer mechanic back in the 80's and split these alot. One particular customer loved to side step the clutch. By the end of his time he could R&R the clutch and drive the tractor out in under 2 hours.

I had slip clutches on PTO rusted solid on east coast salt areas. They won't slip even when bolts are loose. Best to loosen slip clutch and let them burn in polish friction s and get rust off then adjust bolt preload springs . Or else..

On an 88 you pull the engine, no need to split it. If you don’t have the belt pulley gearbox you can change the clutch just by removing the flywheel housing.

I work at an old-school IH/Case IH dealership here in PA Amish country and there are so many of these old 66/86 series tractors still running around every day. The Amish love using them for power units and for pulling wagons around. We get a lot of them in for service.

Ah yes, know all about the starters..............Watched a guy one time in a tomato field install a IH starter in a Deere.........Company mechanic knew it might be wrong, he wasn't sure on the shelf which rebuilt ones was which as they had both colors........Well, they guessed wrong. I thought it was quite funny, I label mine with a paint marker on the nose. Oh well, we had a good laugh.

There are WAY too many out there, that think since you have a slip clutch on a piece of equipment, you are good to go. They never read the part in the manual that tells you to back the springs off and 'burn in' the clutch after setting over winter or an off season, and readjust the clutch to the HP rating of the tractor PTO. If the clutch is rusted tight, or adjusted too tight for the tractor you are using, you have no safety for the internals of the tractor PTO and this kind of stuff happens.

With speed sensors- you've got a lot of choices nowadays. There's a few aftermarket setups, very easy to install. If the vehicle has ABS you can tie into a WSS, the transmission output could have a PWM or hall effect with a magnet like a CPS or CMP. Many differentials like Dana have hall effect/magnet on the ring gear. Many cars (even my '89) have a rev limiter, tied into the neutral safety switch. You should be able to cross a wire somewhere.

Liked the story of the starter that run backward. I was working for a Co. that ran 2 Detort . ONE LIFT HAND TURN ONE RIGHT HAND TURN . run line shafts we had a blower go out on one , thay sent 2 men 100 miles to get a new or rebuilt one . returned with the wrong one. I also work old farms for 20 plus years , I thank the older tractors will still out work the new ones. day per day . To many comptures. In 1980 we got a new 1486 it was chucked 2 times before it made it throue the first 1/2 mile of work . Flywheel was not turn from factory . 15 years later it had not been chuck again.
