An interest walk from "splitting the check" to the death of "Indianapolis Bones". In comedy writing, detailed setups that lead to a surprise denouement are called a "Jarvis street transfer", for the Chicago writer (Walter 'Rye' Schultz) who first used the device in Laurel & Hardy's classic "Esplanade of Romp". This film, which was shot on location in Chicago on the grounds of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, used writing styles like the "jarvis street transfer" to reinvent comedy. Our country's best comedy colleges (the best of which is SUNY HA!) were smart to make mastery of the "jarvis street transfer" required learning, and based on the quality of "Splitting the Check" SNL writer's clearly did not skip class to play hacky sack on the quad.

@@skankhunt-wy9wy i gave the abbreviated version of the story. I totally skipped over the jealous writing partner who claimed he was the Jarvis inventor...and I never mentioned anything about how Rye Schultz got so lost in Chinatown opium houses that he had to start over after losing all of his money to a dealer named Dante Rudd Mcgee. Dante's own story was cut short after a failed attempt at a leadership takeover. SNL paid tribute to this in their skit where that weak dealer played by Chris Redd tried to take over the drug empire run by Keenan. Sure you can laugh at the surface jokes...but comedy is so much funnier when you know the underlying stories used by today's comedy writers. Mikey Day's dissertation on Rye Schultz is required reading for any kid who is trying to make it in writing.

Ok, this sketch is all over the place....and I want more! Let me guess, Dr. Bones is also a surgeon, and he performs surgery on himself after being shot? Bring episode 2!

It's not just Amazon Prime. Netflix's "The I-Land" gave away the big reveal in episode 3/7 and it was done by one character telling another the whole plot. Original series are a mixed bag across streaming services.
