A friend of mine was renting an apartment back in collage, the bathroom was carpeted. She kept having health issues, not feeling well, headaches, sniffles. She would come to work all congested. Start to feel better by the end of the shift. Then come back the next day feeling the same. Turns out it was the carpet in the bathroom, hiding mold growing. Finally made the connection when she would go home to visit family for a week and feel totally fine, then start to feel like crap soon as she got back to town. Carpeting is a bad idea for bathrooms, it hides issues you can't see. I believe it turned out to be a slow leak, getting into the padding below the carpet where she never felt it, ruined the floor underneath. Some landlord probably thought the carpeting was a brilliant way to cover up a floor in need of repairs

As for my m-i-l, she doesn't even understand that she didn't raise her kids (her own now-dead mom did everything before the kids left for college... which they paid for themselves with financial aid & loans; my inlaws were useless & didn't help at all).
