Splitting Wood With A Tire

great769 shows you how to split wood quicker and easier then ever before . This method works with most types of wood, I've split maple , Birch, spruce and fir. If you doing only 5or6 cords a year this is a good little log splitting chopping block, now it won't replace a log splitter and its not intended to. Make sure its covered so the rain doesn't fill the tire so mosquitoes don't use it for a breeding ground. This is a great way to make kindling wood a real back saver and time saver.
As we all know burning wood is a great way to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and its cheaper than oil and with the rising of oil prices this for me is the way to go.

Excellent tip. Thank you. The only thing I might add is I noticed a bit of water sloshing around in the tire. This is a breeding ground for mosquitos. Just punch or drill a few holes in the bottom rim of the tire so that the rainwater drains out. That way the inside of the tire will dry out and mosquitos will not have standing water to breed. Thanks for sharing!

Great idea! thank you for sharing this great tip! I'm a city gal living in the backwoods now and am just learning how to split wood. My B/F was splitting wood from some trees that went down during hurricane Irene. I never split wood before but was excited about giving him a helping hand. He noticed I had flip flops on and said "careful them toes you should have steal toed boots on". I didn't have any at the time, but learned a valuable lesson. No worries though my toes r all intact thank God!

Tried this: it's one of those things that works MUCH, MUCH better than it looks. It's about 10x faster than the old way; and a LOT safer - the tire catches miss hits. Whoever thought of this deserves the Noble Prize in wood splitting.

Enjoyed video and like you enjoying retirement at 74 on 12 acres of heaven in the middle of nowhere central SC. Have a little Joytl woodstove to assist heat pump to keep us warm when the temps drop below freezing. I have white oak, poplar and sweet gum. We like fires in our fire pit on many evenings when company or the grandkids visit. Country folks are great and we watch for each other and ready to defend ourselves and live off the land to some extent. Take care.Philip

I've been using this method since 1976. I use a 20 inch truck tire on the ground with a solid base underneath it. I also use a pickaroon to move the log pieces and split pieces around so I don't have to bend over. The obvious advantage is you don't have to chase the pieces all over the place. Good method; if you disagree, you haven't done much wood splitting.

This works great! It saves a lot of time and hassle of pissin around picking up the split logs. I find that it helps with getting the axe out of the wood when the handle hits the tire and it kinda gets a rebound and bounces out of the log. Thanks for sharing, it makes easy work of splitting firewood quick and easy.

Perhaps you are right, it truly was both. Perspective hinges upon the density of life and dream. After such a buildup as, "Spitting wood with a tire" I instantly became enamored with the concept. My pulse increased and I had a sudden expectation that would be fulfilled by actually seeing this magnificent tire split wood like a boss. My dreams were crushed when I learned it was only a demonstration of the idea of a loop holding wood in an upright and manageable position to be split with an ax.

That's a cool idea. This will work really well for the spruce and birch that I primarily split at my cabin, since those pieces tend to be medium sized and fly all over the map when I lay into em and they split in 2.

Wonderful way to chop wood. I dont split without my tire after watching this video lol. The only thing I do different is I have my chopping block top nailed down with some pieces of scrap osb (to make it wider), then put my tire on without bolting it down so i can get bark and splinters out. Probably would be better if I put legs on and bolt it like in your other video but it works. The tire is so much nicer than bending over all the time. Thank you

Real men are intelligent enough to use their time efficiently by coming up with better ways to do the same thing and achieving the same results. They realize that their time is very valuable and unlike the extremely insecure, negative, cowardice people who are unsatisfied with their life and the person they are, the ones who try to make the lives of others as miserable as their own personalities by criticizing people to create an illusion of them being powerful, and the very same people who aggrandize themselves because they know how little and incompetent they feel about themselves, REAL MEN are actually giving back to the world in a positive way, like this man here who uploaded a youtube video in order to teach others a more productive way to split wood.
