@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 ай бұрын
open is an adverb. Pushed how? open. Always question the verb for adverbs and the noun for adjective. The open door. Here it is an adjective. What type of door? Can you chuck out door from the sentence. The boy pushed the door? That will decide if it is an adjunct or a complement.

Madam, Will adjuncts ( in sentence pattern) always be adverbs? Or are there any exceptions? Because most of the time we refer to it as adverbial adjuncts only.

Well, it is any part added to the main (clause) that is not a part of the main structure, and therefore dispensible. Adjectives and adverbs give us more information about nouns and verbs in the main clause. That is why I said you can remove adjuncts without affecting the main clause. You cannot remove complements.

It was a wonderful explanation and it did helped me to seek some clarity but few doubts got also floated to me, I would be incredibly thankful if you heed though they might be lame . so if we consider ''Indian idol'' and ''innocent'' as complements as they are contributing to the core sense of the respective sentences (since what we assumed) then why cant we buy the same assumption in case of ''which song she learned'', what if ''they'' have asked her to sing some specific song which they do have .Besides if we go with the consideration of the latter as a dependent clause or adjunct which can be easily removed without hindering the core meaning , can't we do the same with ''innocent'' and ''Indian ideal''(as its an assumption or could be taken according to the reference or connotation etc.) Another doubt which I came across is in ''to sing the anthem'', can we segregate or classify them into two different elements rather then of clubbing then together into a direct object. Can't we divide ''to sing'' and ''the anthem'' as an object and adjunct(NP). kindly look to it, it would be so generous of you.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher7 ай бұрын
It is a difficult topic. One that is done badly in schools. So it is natural to have doubts. Indian idol and innocent are completing the sentences and referring back to the subject or object that they are giving us more information about. On their own they have no other purpose. Hence complements. They asked her to sing the new song which she had learnt. This is your sentence. You cannot get rid of the object - to sing the new song. Asked her what? To sing the new song (direct object) to whom? her (indirect object) which she had learnt (describes the noun song in the object, hence object complement with an adjectival function. You cannot do what ifs on the given sentence. You should give me a new sentence. Complements cannot be removed. They named her indian idol. Remove indian idol and you get: They named her. (incomplete sentence) or it changes meaning to her naming ceremony or calling her names. Hence vague. Well if you split to sing, the sentence would be They asked her to sing. Is it the same as They asked her to sing the anthem. You cannot play with meaning of the original sentence. Can you remove to sing the anthem? No. You will be left with They asked her. It is very logical. I hope your doubts are cleared.

Mam still I am confuse,in adjunct place , adverb only comes or adjective also will come there mam.we are calling adverb as adjunct mam.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
An adverb can be an adjunct. If I say she sang beautifully. I can drop beautifully, can't I? I can just say She sang. But if I say I am a teacher. I cannot drop the noun a teacher. I cannot say I am... It is not complete. Hence complements cannot be dropped. Check if the main clause will suffer if you drop the word, phrase or clause. If it is not clear, next time, give me examples of what you are asking.

@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Yes, correct. When you have these sentences check if the 'fast' is a complement. Can we just say SV - He runs. Yes. Then it is SVA. But if we say 'He became' then that is incomplete. We need a noun (a mayor) or an adjective (tired) to complete it. Then we have SVC. Always check if the word is completing or just adding more detail which can be taken out.

Please explain this in some detail...
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
@@muralinagarajan8305 I miss comments when you reply in a chain. I don't get the notification, unless I search in the replies of another person's chain. It is best to put your questions in a new comment. 'It' is a pronoun in the third person singular along with he and she. Therefore, the subject verb agreement is singular. He is a boy, she is a girl, it is a dog. Then we have the impersonal pronoun 'it' that stands for all common, collective and abstract nouns and their phrases or even clauses. The pronoun 'it' represents: The table in the dining room, it is broken. (a thing) The herd ran fast and it had no leader. (a collective) The democracy with election dynamics, she found it had repercussions. (an abstract idea in the noun phrase) That he should be told to come, it is indeed an insult. (subordinate noun clause referred to in the main clause by the pronoun 'it') 'It is he who went to the bank.' This is where the impersonal 'it' represents the pronoun 'he'. 'It is he.' The adjective clause 'who went to the bank' modifies the pronoun 'he'. The 'he' can be substituted by a common noun 'the boy' or the proper noun 'Jack'. We do not normally say 'It is it' for an animal. We say: It is that which crawled under the table. 'It" can be a connective to represent a whole passage earlier where the 'he' is described. The boy from the small village in the middle of the town with sliperless feet.... etc. Here the "it' the pronoun connects the earlier paragraph to the pronoun 'he' following. You second query is easy. You need a subject and object to transit and change places. Hence you cannot make a passive without them. Your understanding is correct in your examples. I have done a video on active passive voice. You will find it in my playlist. Only transitive verbs can be put into passive.

@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
An adjunct is any phrase or clause (adjectival and adverbial) added to the main clause and therefore they do not affect the meaning of the main clause. They are additional information on the noun and verb. The complement cannot be removed because it is integral to the meaning in the main clause and completes it. Try to understand not define.
@Hendrix.U Жыл бұрын
I'm Hendrix from Nigeria. I appreciate your tutorials but I want to point out that I observed how you did not indicate which of the objects was direct or indirect in the example "She made me laugh." My main purpose for commenting, however, is that I do not agree that the bare infinitive "laugh" is an object. I think it complements the direct object "me" because (1) without the complement "laugh," the sentence has a different meaning. (2) "to laugh" can be replaced by "something," ie " she made me something." What!? "To laugh". (3) we can replace " to laugh" with another object complement such as "her ally," "a man," "so proud," etc. Can u kindly confirm or correct my observation. Thank you. Keep up the good work
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Hendrix. The verb 'made' is a causative verb. I am not laughing, the subject 'she' is causing someone to do something. This is a special group of verbs: let and make. They take the bare infinitives and not the objects in the causative form. So you are wrong. What? 'to laugh' is the noun function of the infinitive. Now if you say 'She made me her ally', then you are made there is not a causative but a regular dynamic verb and ally is object because it is different from your subject. Where is the object in 'I made her her ally' to call 'ally' an object complement? I can give you a simpler example in: she made a cake. Here 'cake' is an object. She made me proud. Here 'proud', an adjective is not an object but a subject complement. Ally is a noun, proud is an adjective whereas 'laugh' is a verb, but here it is a bare infinitive (in a noun function). Hope this clears your confusion. Keep watching and keep asking.
@Hendrix.U Жыл бұрын
@@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher You have absolutely misunderstood me by quoting examples which I didn't give. I never said "I made her her ally," what I said was " She made me her ally," and I said that "her ally" in my example above is the object complement of "me" which is the direct object of the verb "made." Another area you were wrong was when you said that "proud" in my example "She made me proud" is a subject complement. No, ma'am! That's an object complement because "proud describes the object " me" and not the subject "she." Also, I want to correct what you said that causative verbs can only be used with infinitives. They can also be used with participles when using passive voice expression. See examples below. Example 1: I had John drive my car. ( causative verb "had" used with bare infinitive "drive")) Example 2: I had my car driven by John. (Causative verb " had" used with participle "driven"). Now that I've gotten those out of the way, Let me go back to my original purpose of posting. I noticed, in your video, that you indicated "me" and "laugh" as objects in the sentence "She made me laugh." Objects are of three types so could you please indicate what type of object each one is. Direct or indirect? My concern here is to know exactly what element of sentence (SVOCA) "laugh" belongs to.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Жыл бұрын
@@Hendrix.U I did not see this reply as it came on the thread and notifications only come on the first reponses. I am not sure you will get my reply either. Anyway, 'She makes me laugh' was the controversy. laugh can be substitutued by 'make my bed' bake a cake, find a pen etc. (i.e. to do something) It is a causative verb (make) and therefore the following bare infinitives are very tricky. Apparently, 'laugh' is an infinitive object complement as it show the action that She made me do according to one expert. Please feel free to disagree. Subject + causative verb + object + bare infinitive verb functioning as action. So, I am happy to go with you and call it a complement instead of an indirect object. As complement, it is attached to the object 'me' I think. If you find more light on this topic, or a video on this part, put it up here for me to learn more. The rule a complement cannot be jettisoned remains intact.

Mam please tell object .direct object refer thing s,indirect object refer person . adjunct refer adverb. Verb refer action.subject refer noun or pronoun.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Direct object refers to the answer to who/what? put to the verb. Indirect object will not answer directly by needs a preposition like to who or to what for an answer. Adjunct is any word/phrase/clause that gives added information to the main sentence and which does not alter its meaning. Verb can be action (to do) / state (all forms of to be)/ or belonging (to have). Subject position is anything before the verb. May be the doer of the action in active, or the thing it is done to in the passive.

I disagree. Let's look at the structure with another verb. 'He gave me a pencil' Sounds ok? So the sentence:: He threw me a ball is perfectly correct. Yes, you can say He threw a ball to me too. I prefer the first as it is shorter and more compact. In both cases, 'me' is an indirect object, so no change in that. Thank you for liking my videos. At the end of the day, we only have what we leave behind in the world. So I hope to leave all that I have gained for those who come after me. :)
