I think this collection really shows something amazing - as much as Bones teases and ribs Spock about being Vulcan, I dont think it's ever half as mean as it comes across. Bones knows that Spock is half human and pushing away that humanity does him no good, so he calls him a "hobgoblin" or whatever else and pushes him to feel emotion not because he hates Vulcans but because he knows that Spock needs to accept his human half to be healthy (McCoy does have psychology training after all). It's clear here where emotions are being forced on him (which by everything Bones has ever said should be a dream come true for him) but instead he begs them to stop, because he knows that it needs to be Spock's decision. By the movies, Spock does accept his human half more and I think that's what Bones was pushing for along, plus he knows that it's the only approach that'll work on Spock (who enjoys arguing with Bones too)... just my 2 cents haha

@mnirwin51123 жыл бұрын
That was a great scene and so well played by all three. :) You can tell Kirk doesn't entirely believe what they're saying but he's not going to push his luck by demanding specifics.

@victorpradha99462 жыл бұрын
@@logiciansvlog5800 Spock is the best liar because he so artfully avoids appearing to be an outright liar. In other words, he is very careful with his words and picks and chooses when he's engaging in active deception, like he did with the Romulan commander.
@radio.silence2 жыл бұрын
You can see how McCoy gets nervous, maybe even embarassed when Kirk asks. He knows that his behaviour towards Spock would disappoint Kirk immensely, as it should, so he tenses up and resigns himself to what Spock will say. I think he was relieved and grateful when he realised Spock wasn't telling. And it was very gracious of Spock to lie about it...
@AlexIsModded Жыл бұрын
I've personally always liked the friendship between Spock and McCoy more than these two with any other character. Spock by far has the best relationships with everyone from the original crew. However, there's something about these two that is just such a natural friendship. I think the reboot films misinterpreted their banter for arguing or animosity between them. Spock and McCoy spoke to each other this way because they were that comfortable with each other. I always got the impression they trusted one another more than any other character on the show.

The whole McCoy - Spock bickering was the brainchild of Gene Coon, sometimes known as Star Trek’s “forgotten Gene” to distinguish him from creator/producer Gene Roddenberry. Coon’s contributions to the show were very substantial, and he wrote somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 episodes, including “A Piece Of The Action” and “The Trouble With Tribbles”. Sadly, Coon died of cancer at the age of only 49 in the early 1970s.

That bit from Plato's Stephchildren-when McCoy is talking about emotion and SPOCK is not chiding him, hell, even being accepting of his point, that is what you would call some serious shit.
@victorpradha99462 жыл бұрын
You got a sense of how deep McCoy's affection and respect for Spock runs when he's pleading, begging practically for them to stop forcing Spock to laugh. McCoy couldn't stand to see Spock humiliated like that.
@JnEricsonx2 жыл бұрын
@@victorpradha9946 It was more than being upset about humiliation-it was actual MENTAL DAMAGE potential. Same thing happened in Enterprise, when Shran used a device to basically chemically shut down Soval's emotional suppression methods-turning him back into Matt Sikes :).

@@JnEricsonx Yes...he was responding to the medical issue/need as for Vulcans, emotional display, is demonstrative of neurocognitive damage/degeneration. Sarek's Bendii syndrome reflects how untempered emotional display is a sign of what we could call severe dementia! @JGLewis-jn2km3 жыл бұрын
@@plls2880 Immediately prior to this scene, we see Bones inject Spock with a sleeping concoction from the 'hypo'. ... Spock, as commanding officer when Captain Kirk was not present, had decided that he himself was to go to the torture room, instead on McCoy (Bones). The aliens were allowing the three - Kirk, Spock, and McCoy - to decide among themselves who would go next... Yet Dr. McCoy circumvented this by the injection of sleeping medicine into both Kirk, and then Mr. Spock, so that he (McCoy) could choose himself as being the one to go.... I believe the aliens (and I forgot the name of the race) had formatted the situation thusly: "We need to do one more experiment. Dr. McCoy has an 87% chance of dying, and while Mr. Spock's life is not in question [if you choose him] he has a 93% of brain damage resulting in permanent insanity."
