I don't remember that scene 2:16. It was beautifully played. McCoy pins Spock down where he is most vulnerable and then immediately extends comfort and empathy. Spock allows himself to accept this and both men share their fear for Jim.

One thing I truly loved about McCoy's character, is that he was really an adept student of human nature, he knew Jim and Spock almost as well as they knew themselves, if not better. And in the first clip, I think that's really the first time McCoy and Spock ever got truly real with each other, even though Spock tried to deny what McCoy said, you could see that Spock silently conceded that the former was right.

The interaction between Spock and McCoy in the prison cell scene is one of the best in the entire series. McCoy broke through Spock's reserve and spoke directly to his human side and Spock knew it. The more I see of the the original series, the more I believe it was the best of all them because of the outstanding acting ability by all the principal cast members but here especially by Nimoy and Kelley. This moment was one of their best scenes together. This sort of drama was missing from the feature films, in my opinion.

The bickering between Spock and McCoy was the brainchild of Gene Coon, Star Trek's "forgotten Gene". He made numerous contributions to the show, in addition to writing somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 - 20 episodes (the exact total is unclear since a number of them were under assumed names or were uncredited).

Vulcans have stronger emotions than Humans. That's why they have to control them. Spock doesn't struggle with Human emotions. He struggles with a Human's lesser ability to control. Obviously he controls himself better than a Human thanks to his Vulcan half but he doesn't control himself as well as a Vulcan thanks to his Human half.

I don't think people give McCoy his flowers for being incredibly smart and capable at reading people. Saying to Spock, "Why, you wouldn't know what to do with a warm, decent feeling," was PEAK reverse-psychology, that succeeded in making Spock acknowledge his feelings in the moment, out loud, instead of repressing them and continuing to ratchet up his stress. McCoy's energy immediately flips after Spock says "Oh, really?" turning to understanding and empathy, and Spock feels actually uncomfortably SEEN in that moment. Like, they get on each other's nerves, but I often think Spock and McCoy knew each other better and more innately than anyone, including Kirk sometimes.

I don't understand the crux of their arguments, since what Spock is feeling is in plain sight in a rationalized way, and Nimoy's acting make him come across as more reserved than emotionless anyway. So keeping that in mind is McCoy just frustrated that he's not being more demonstrative or acknowledging those feelings head on, or does he really think he's not emotional? If it's the first, why can't he just appreciate Spock's own way of showing those feelings even if acts stubborn about it?

Vulcans are not emotionless. They were war-like and barbaric almost to extinction. Spock is also half human. Emotion from both sides of his bloodline are very present. Hm. I think I need a different interpretation/opinion of the scene at 2:18. I know that they were under a lot of stress and everything, but why would he suddenly just throw that out there? There wasn't a real reason to attack Spock, and that was some pretty heavy stuff. He knew exactly where the weak spot in Spock's armor was, and he hit it directly. It's out of place. We already knew that McCoy was aware of Spock's internal struggle, but this is the first time he ever used it against him so directly. It seems cruel, to me anyways. Thoughts?
@geso101
@geso101 5 жыл бұрын
I consider this scene the single best interaction between Spock and McCoy in the entire series. I love it! And it is not McCoy who is attacking here, on the contrary he is trying to thank his friend. But Spock starts BS’ing so much about the reasons for saving him and for wanting to escape, it is just utterly annoying. He is lying through his teeth, he is lying to McCoy’s face. It is understandable that McCoy cuts through the BS and spells out the plain truth: that Spock is hiding his feelings and his human side. That Spock saved him because he is his friend and that he wants to get out because he is worried about his other friend. But there is no malice in McCoy’s contact, in fact his countenance at the end and his last sentence show consideration and concern for Spock. McCoy has been mean and rude in other occasions (the Tholian Web is the worst case) but here he is not angry or spiteful. He is just calling out on Spock’s refusal to show his real feelings. And if a friend of mine did me a great benefit but unabashedly hid the reason for doing so, I would have reacted exactly like McCoy: cut through the BS and telling them that I see through them anyway.
@geso101
@geso101 5 жыл бұрын
My favourite part of the dialogue: Spock: “Really, Doctor?” (Spock trying to keep his face straight and not appear upset and still denying everything) McCoy: “I know” (McCoy replies as if he didn’t hear Spock’s previous answer. As if Spock actually told him: “I am worried about Jim, Doctor”).

@@geso101 Yeah, I can see it now. Something about the way McCoy says that he wouldn't know what to do with a decent feeling just rubs me the wrong way, I guess, because they both know it's not true. Spock definitely cares about them, and they care about him too, no matter how much they bash on each other. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, this has been bugging me for a really long time 😅. I'm glad I finally understand it more

I always though McCoy was a bit over emotional here he gets angry because Spock shows no emotion. I don't know why McCoy was often pushing him to be more human.

Spock and McCoy understood each other in a way that not even Kirk understood them. Spock and McCoy both had to try to control part of who they are. Spock controlled his more emotional side to be a good Vulcan, and McCoy also had to attempt to control his more emotional side to be a good Doctor.

"You're welcome", I believe, is the correct response. Anyone ever say that entire Spock sentence to someone when they thank you?

In Bread and Ciruses McCoy & Spock are bantering and worried about their Captain. Meanwhile, Kirk was spending time with his personal slave for the evening, Drusilla. No concern at all gentleman, Kirk out.

The absolute worst episodes in my humble opinion: Turnabout Intruder; The Way to Eden; Requiem for Methuselah; Elaan of Troysius; Spock's Brain; and The Children Shall Lead. Worst of all is the stinker Turnabout Intruder.

@@sarahfullerton6894 I've just watched all of those episodes for the first time. I don't see what's wrong with Methuselah aside from the forced Kirk subplot; as for the rest, I've heard about how terrible they are, and I wouldn't consider them the best episodes, but I wasn't bothered by them. The reasoning I've heard for why they're so despised doesn't hold water either.

@@Dragblacker , yes, it's that forced Kirk sub-plot, and the way Kirk's character in the episode is so nastily written. And, if you are OK with these episodes, good. Even the bad ones have some snappy repartee between the big three. These are episodes that I avoid. I especially dislike Turnabout Intruder. Misogynistic in nature, and way, way over the top by William Shatner. The last episode should have been the previous good one.
