Fun fact: in portuguese there's a slang using "salve" for say hello and another using "valeu" for say goodbye or thank you. It's was a very bad boy/ cool slang since 2012 and it still hate by the portuguese teachers. So all this time the slang was correctly, considering it a latin root, at least the bad boys learned Latin!😂

Como ya te he comentado en otro video, sigo tus enseñanzas en la pronunciación clásica. Después de ver tus videos, no puedo entender a los profesores que no consideran importante la pronunciación, y solo se limitan a enseñar la gramática. Como si la pronunciación no fuera parte fundamental y constitutiva de la lengua latina. Gracias Luke por tus enseñanzas!!

Thanks for this video. Awesome. Portuguese speaker here. The pronunciation rules are, maybe not surprisingly, very similar to portuguese. In portuguese almost all the Es are "closed E" (not sure if this is the correct technical term) not the "open E". We use an accute diacritic to mark an open E, like É, otherwise by default is a closed E. The diphthongs of Latin seem to be collapsed in portuguese (like in other languages I supose?) to a single vowel. For example Enciclopaedia collapsed to Enciclopedia but since it is an "open E" in portuguese is "Enciclopédia". All children in Brazil (and I guess Portugal also) learn first the 5 vowels only: A E I O U and we build on top of that, with variations usually marked by diacritics. Brazilian portugueses noawadays seems to have replaced the L letter I hear in you latin pronunciation by the U sound. So we say "Braziu" not "Brazil". "Mau" instead of "Mal". However I noticed that this is a recent phenomenon. If you hear older brazilians that were alphabetized prior to the 60s they use this "Latin L" aways (also used in spanish I guess?) but not the younger generations! Another more recent phenomenon is the R pronunciation. All the Rs were in the tip of tongue, "rolled", in the past. I guess this is the R in your Latin pronunciation right? (and also the same in Spanish?) But Brazilian portuguese have adopted R "in the throat" sometimes (I think the term is "retroflex R" if I'm not wrong) or the R commonly used in english (like in "car"). However if you hear older speakers of portugese here in Brazil, then no, all the Rs are "in the tongue". Portuguese also losted the declesion system of Latin. The substantives are more or less fixed. I think this simplifies things, but in my opinion makes it more difficult to make a syntactic / grammatical analysis of the phrase. Many childrens in Brazil had (as I did) some difficulty in finding the "case" of a phrase in school. Much later when I studied Latin for the first time I noticed that the declension system forced you to always get the case right since it is necessary. It's a shame they stopped teaching Latin in the schools here in Brazil (during the 60s I think). Overall slowly speaked portugueses (particularly "old fashion" portuguese) are VERY similar to Latin and I have sometimes noticed some foreign choirs singing latin songs with kind of a "english accent" with that feeling "Oh my, they are butchering the language".
