Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for posting. The South Western mainline was in transition at this period when 1967 REP and TCs were being replaced with the new 442s. Because in good Southern Railway tradition, the REP traction motors were being reused on the 442s, Class 73s were drafted into to cover the 91 fasts and 92 semi fast services. Sadly the 442s were the last decent quality trains on the SW mainline which has now descended to being nothing more than an outer suburban commuter line instead of one of Britain's most important intercity routes. Herbert Walker would be spinning in his grave!

yeah i remember those days too…i used to stand at berrylands at hope a REP would thunder through, but they were so sparse at that point only covering a few diagrammed services in peak hours…but it was still nice to see their old mates still running on home their original home route coupled up to two 73s. but i did capture a REP…at berrylands…after being there for 6 hours..my cycle from wallington was all worth it..even if my family were worried sick as it was before mobiles become a thing and had no idea where i was!! hehe

An amazing day - this must be a treasured clip - so much variety and unusual stock formations (and variety) in one day's filming. I envy you both footage and the experience.

Absolutely bloody marvellous! My area, my era. That period when pairs of EDs were working the fasts was bonkers. I was only 15 years old at the time, but even then I realised it was a bit special. I had no idea at the time why that was happening! I have to say the highlights were the pair of shunters working light (never ever saw that at Southampton!) and seeing the old offices at the east end of platform 2 & 3, where the station announcer Stan (Dalek Man) and my Dad worked. Many thanks. One for the archives for me.

Yes when 91 was fast to Southampton and Bournemouth from London and vice versa. Now the service is a feeble shadow of its former self. London Bournemouth used to be an Inter City route.

Nice video, a couple of really interesting things. The 4TC / 4REP / 4TC formation at about 5:20 is something I have never seen before, and the 4BEP on the Waterloo-Bournemouth stopper!

7:02 - An 8 car 93 service! I remember when an 8 or 12 car 93 service turned up, it would cause mayhem at smaller stations like Swaythling and St Denys. A lot of the school kids would jump down from the train onto the trackside!! Very dangerous! There were no tannoys and the guard never went through the train telling people to move to the front 4 coaches.

@@spompey Fascinated to aee this. I have never read anywhere about a five car TC unit - was this the remnant of the 8 VAB (I think) that was produced because of production problems early in the piece?
