M. Loved your videos and the way you talk through the process, I’m new to this, have load of questions about plastering since there can be lot of different situation, but in this video I would like to know : Is there any stage that need to press the trowel really hard to flatten the plaster? Can’t really tell in the video when to use pressure or not. Thanks

Wow... just wow... this guy is more than just a plasterer. He's taken his trade perfected it and now he's marketing his own company on utube. Makes me think i should do the the same, I've been in building industry for 20 years. I'm an accomplished builder, i cut my teeth on loft conversions mainly, but that involves a load of skills.... was thinking about starting a tool review channel a while back as most of the current ones aren't actually reviewed by trades on site. Well done mate, your a smart cookie.

For an amateur to plaster a ceiling is a monumental task. By my time just after the war we were plastering on to plasterboard just think what a generation , or maybe two, before me had to cope with when the medium was wooden lath. I think that I might hve got dirty too.

Same. Did my apprenticeship in 1985, 50 kg bags of browning mixed in a bath with a shovel applied to breeze block walls. Skimming was mixed with a stick and a plunger which consisted of a bicycle chain ring screwed/welded onto a wooden or metal T-bar. Trowels were a 13" marshall town or tyzak, not stainless and were like a lump of 3x2 until broken in which took about 4 months !! These youngsters don't know they're born with all these modern tools/mixers 🤣🤣
@allanfraser54104 жыл бұрын
Yes there was more to solid plastering than simply skimming on to plasterboard especially so if the walls were uneven. I would put on a band or strip of plaster across the wall as high as I could reach, - straighten or rule this out then check for plumb , then straighten again if needed . It was then a case of filling in the rest of the wall , hopefully the joiner had put on a ground rail, and ruling off using as your guide the ground rail and your strip along the top. The area at the top would be filled in and ruled off just like the bottom , using a stool to reach up. If there is no ground rail a straightened strip would have to be formed then and checked for plumb with the upper strip. In time the job was pretty straight forward.

Hey pal. Great video and I did this process on a small wall in a cupboard and I did ok to be fair. Just struggled with timings really. It would be great is if you could let me/us know timings for each stage on how long to wait for the next process please. For example: 1st coat on and flattened, how long until the second goes on? 2nd coat on and how long before you first trowel? 1st trowel done, how long before you sponge float? You do say then wait approx. 5-8 mins after sponge floating before 2nd trowel. 2nd trowel done how long before you wet trowel? You do say then to wait 10-15 mins before you dry trowel. would love it if you could fill in the gaps please. :)
@Ackers965 жыл бұрын
You want wait around 20 minutes between each trowel. You don't need to use a sponge float either. Your 1st coat needs to be layed on within half hour. If you've mixed enough u can put your second coat straight on. Or if you wanted mix a new for your second coat. So if your mixing a new one. clean your bucket out. Flatten the wall in, clean your tools off, by the time you've mixed it will be ready for a 2nd coat. Between each trowel its 20 minute intervals, once u have finished trowelling up. i find an easy way is to set a timer on your phone for 20 mins so u don't forget. Hope this helps

Hi Blaine, Have you any videos on how you deal with suction as this massively varies on the makeup of the wall. Obviously I do the usual process of PVA but at times I still find some walls literally suck moisture immediately on applying the 1st coat. Recently I did two opposite walls as one hit. One wall previously painted took the usual 45 - 55 minutes to start going but the opposite wall being old plaster with no previous paint was going off straight away resulting in me racing to beat the clock. I managed to get the seconds coats on and finish the process, but under pressure which isn’t ideal. Just wondering if you have any top tips on reducing suction further other than just PVA. Cheers James

Love sponge finish , it all drys out spot on the same . When the boarding is perfect and tapperd joints I cover the scrims then start the wall and put one nice coat on , people will say one coat but technically a plaster board is perfect smooth and flat already the only thing that needs 2 coats is the scrim like I said when lucky and have a good boarder ahead of you 🤣. Great work and plasterer 👍

Hopefully this time with the help of your video, I'll do an ok job? What's the rough timings for the first few stages? Big thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

Is sponge floating essential in plastering a wall? - I have not seen it done in your previous video about plastering a drywall nor in the one about plastering an old wall. I am not sure now but I cannot recall it being mentioned in the tool review one either. - I think I only saw a diamond float being used before, in the rendering video, on the cement mix.

No it's not, it's just a alternative lovely finishing touch which he's teaching us as a bonus technique for those who are interested

Honestly came for instructions, but I get carried away with the visual ASMR and his voice. It's like therapeutic watching someone else plaster and chat away... I need to focus on the instructions 😀👍 absolutely excellent work

Tanx for the upload is it true most plasterers will eventually get a shoulder injury by continusely doing skimming plastering?

Not a problem mate! It does happen unfortunately but if you look after yourself then you might be fine. However, it is just wear and tear mate. Its the stress of the trade!

He won't let u know that. Besides every background is different. I've blue gritted my walls and it takes a lot longer fot the 1st coat to dry.

I did a plastering course a few month ago, have just completed my first living room walls and ceiling. Its a pretty decent effort. When I was taught, it was to to go left to right (for right handers) but start from the bottom, and work upwards. Is there any benefit doing it top down or just as long as it goes on? Cheers

when you begin with the sponge coat is the sponge float wet, damp, or bone dry when you first begin? Great video anyway thanks.

It might be too much water, dodgy batch of plaster, heat or trowelling too early??? It could be anything pal. It can go wrong sometimes, I must admit!
@shwmae45834 жыл бұрын
Hi, watched you using the speed skim on an earlier video, I must say I've been reluctant to try one even though the guy that taught me has suggested I try one, well, I'm ordering it today! great work, thoroughly enjoyed your videos, keep up the good work, pleasure to watch .. learning something new after doing this for 14 years!

Blaine how long do you wait or how much pull does it need before you use the sponge? I think this is why I’m getting grains so much. I might not be waiting enough or im too hard with the sponge. Im still learning and watched this 100 times lol

All these different trowels these days complicating things put in on with a Marshall town lay it on nice and flat and walk away come back and trowel up half hour later with abit of water I find the new methods tend to ripple the skim, but that said love your enthusiasm matey

I hear what your saying mate - you can't beat a well worn Marshalltown. They just take forever and a day to break ha! Great hearing from you and thanks for the comment 👍
@Fordmad904 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s true Matey I have tried these methods myself but just can’t beat the old way it’s the same finish every time,must admit Marshall town trowels are numb compared to a flexi but I dint trust the flexi finish I have seen some terrible results once painted

Great video mate well explained, just wanted to know if you are only doing a small wall lets say 4 m2, is it ok to use the same mix or do 2 small mixes. I will be using the speedskim to flatten the first coat. thanks.
