Can a square pumpkin fit in where roundness is everything? No, but it's hilarious seeing him try!

Honestly, the only thing that could have made the costume better is if he had his eyes closed the entire time, so that all of his expression had to come out the same way as Jack Skeleton's. Otherwise, it was spot on.

So it's... Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, but for Halloween? The main character is born with some sort of abnormality that the others of his kind make fun of him for, Jackolympics = Reindeer Games, the protagonist's abnormality allows them to save the day when a storm comes the night before the big holiday they're associated with, and at the end their worth is proven and they're given a place of honor as a literal beacon of light, admired by all who once mocked them.

I actually agree that it is harmful to present the food chain and the predator-prey relationships of the natural world as evil. Scary, yes, when the character is the prey. I have no problem with movies from the point of view of a mouse for example that has to survive and escape from hawks or cats, because that gives humans the instinctive thrill of simpathetic escape from danger that we also have to endure in the natural, wild world and in our current lives sometimes. But to present to children a world in which the only acceptable, happy existence is when predators apparently don't eat and starve to death (and yet never do starve in the movie, or face the consequences of their lack of food) and prey are the only ones who are "enlightened" or "good" simply because their bodies are designed to eat living things that are not mammels or insects? I can only see this as harmful, unrealistic, and foolish. Artists are of course free to do what they wish with their stories, and this freedom is extremely important. But if I was a parent, I would view a movie with such messages as potentially more harmful or at least more worthless and trashy than one that had actual true and deeper messages. There are such children's movies out there, and I'd reward the artist who made them with my money, as I bought their films for my child rather than films like this.

I prefer the realistic portrayal as well! Unless it is a world of civilized animals like Disney's Robin Hood or Zootopia. Though even Zootopia still has very real elements with teh fear of the carnivores turning on them.
@blondbraid7986
@blondbraid7986 7 жыл бұрын
S Sokolova Yes, It's one thing to make a children's story set in a cute and harmless world, and another thing to lie about them on how the real world works. I think kids should be taught early on that you can't get everything and that sometimes, you can't just find a magical solution that makes everybody happy. Too many kids movies are also hypocritical in showing predators as evil for eating other animals, whereas omnivores eating hot dogs or hamburgers are apparently OK since we don't see the animals who got slaughtered. I eat meat myself, but I don't pretend that no animals had to die in order for me to do so, and the "just eat candy instead" message of this movie was plain absurd. It's like Marie Antoinette saying "let them eat cake" when the peasants complained that they had no bread. The thing with the bats is especially dumb when you consider that there actually are bats that lives of eating fruit instead, but apparently you can't advocate for healthy eating in a kids movie, no they had to promote candy instead.

Heck, even in Charlotte's Web-- which this movie references-- managed to avoid the stereotype that carnivores are evil for being carnivores. Charlotte agreed to not eat other bugs _in front_ of Wilbur, because he personally was squeamish about it, but the fact that she eats other bugs in general was portrayed as natural and she wasn't any less sympathetic for it.

Is it just me, or does Spookley look like a Veggietales character in the way he's designed? I dunno, I'm probably the only one who thinks that. Here's a bit of a fun fact: The reason pumpkins are associated with Halloween is because centuries ago, scary faces were carved into pumpkins as a means of warding evil spirits away. This was mostly in New England since pumpkins were from North America in origin, while in Europe, turnips were used instead. This is actually the same reason gargoyles were constructed on castles and cathedrals, so when you really think about it, Jack-o Lanterns are basically just hippy gargoyles. Also, one can breed a pumpkin or melon to be square if it's made to grown in a contained area such as a box or such. I read an article about this years back that talked about square melons being bred.

That's just the most famous example I can think of, without doing research into her other roles, but she popped up a lot in the cartoons I saw. Not a lot of range in what I recognized, but I have fond memories of her voice. Look into her other work. I can't promise you'll like it but she's been at this for decades.

Okay two things that come to mind of this Not-So-Great Pumpkin special: 1. Yes there are some bats that don't eat bugs, but these are bats who should. The idea of one of them being named Bella and in a way its a "vegan" bat is reminding me of Twilight! Ick! 2. The spiders are named Edgar, Allan and Poe? Okay this may sound corny, but if it was three ravens with those names that'd make sense. This is just throwing a reference without anything to connect it!

Bats eat lots of mosquitoes, which is a good thing irl, but if they were in this movie they'd probably be so sickeningly cute it'd be as "old-school" as ladybugs and spiders. I can see it now. Bella saying, "Now let those adorable dirty infected needles with wings go!" Then the bats all died of malnutrition from eating only candy, and everyone else got malaria and died, too. The End! ^_^ Well, maybe this story is taking place in a different universe where mosquitoes and disease and carving up pumpkins doesn't exist, but whatever. Only infants and their helicopter parents could possibly like this boring cartoon.

people in Japan would pay up to 50 dollars for GMO products like square melons and pumpkins. So technically the rounder ones would be considered defective and inferior.

why do bad kids movie portray carniverious animals as a bad thing i don't mean having a villain who's a carnivore i mean turning a carnierious animal into a herbivore leo the lion did it norm of the north did it shark tales did it (even thought there are sharks that don't eat meat) i am not saying i want to see a disney movie where a wolf tear's apart a deer i am saying that don't dumb down the animal kingdom just because you think that children are stupid

I thought Halloween was originally a week of harvest where leftovers would be set outside of each person's house, to ward off goblins so they wouldn't eat the crop... or the people who harvested them.

is this movie just trying to be rudolph but for halloween like... square pumpkin = red nosed reindeer, "jackolympics" * sigh * = reindeer games/takeoff practice, getting placed on a table on a creepy farmer dude's front porch = guiding santa's sleigh were the creators of this movie like "hey remember when rankin bass's rudolph, we should do that... but make all the reindeer pumpkins and take out all the parts that made that movie unique and creative"

I used to have that movie! I got it for Christmas when I was a little kid. I liked it at first, but my sister would watch it over and over, so I got tired of it pretty quickly. These days, we watch your movie reviews together. This is one of the few movies you reviewed that I’ve actually watched and/or owned. Also, this movie does not look as good as 6 year old me thought it was back then. Oh, and my sister thinks you’re very funny. Sometimes she laughs until she cries when we’re watching your videos.

Is it just me or does Edgar sound like Tom Kenny doing one of his nasally voices? Just a little bit of tweaking and it'd almost sound exactly like the voice he used for the bad guy in Elf Bowling XD Also, too bad we didn't get to see any freakish bat-spider hybrid babies lmao I really needed something to help block out the memory of the cringy lion-elephant hybrids from Leo The Lion
