Shirley Jackson is truly one of the gothic horror greats and I hope you like it despite your reservations. It’s very unlike the show but is still one of my favorite books of all time. Whereas the show was about family, the book is clearly about repression. Still, I hope you go into it with an open mind. Obsessed with your tbr, I can’t wait to read my own spooky books.

on the topic of recommending BIPOC horror authors - just want to mention that Alexis Henderson is Black and so is her protagonist in year of the witching! I just started it this week and I'm loving it so far. also recently read and loved bunny - super super weird but I loved the writing and reading it was a wild ride! 🔪

In response to you wanting recs by black authors: I am hosting Blackoweenathon this year (it's a month-long readathon) and there are lots of horrors and thriller writers available. I have a google doc on my announcement video.

I don't typically love horror novels but the graphic novels and manga alternatives are actually slowly creeping their way into my heart, who knows what I might read in October...... thanks for the recs!!!

about the haunting of hill house: the only thing the show has in common with the book is the haunted house. I read the book before watching the show and was so confused because the show is NOTHING like the book! But it is a good book though, I had to read it for a uni class couple years ago and do plan on reading it again before Halloween :)

Another vampire story that came before Dracula was The Vampyre, by John Polidori. It came out in 1819! He was actually there with Mary Shelley the night she was inspired to write Frankenstein :) but Lord Byron ended up getting the rights to the story, something that Polidori could not deal with and he took his own life because of it. It's a short story, and I believe many people regard it as the one that started the stereotype of vampires as we know them nowadays!

You should really read “Another” by yukito ayatsuji. The manga is just amazing as for the anime they made with the same name. One of my favorite horror mangas and anime!

xJoleneXx i know right! I has been the same for me, on book depository it’s always sold out so I bought mine on amazon. You can only get the completed manga collection and not the separate manga’s, so it’s a bit pricey but totally worth it!
@nikki98084 жыл бұрын
the completed collection of the manga is huuuuge but I think it’s worth it to sit down and have a really atmospheric read. how did you like the anime? I started the first episode years ago but never finished it

My TBR for October is: The October Boys by Adam Millard, Your House is on Fire, Your Children All Gone by Stefan Kiesbye, The Apartment by S.L. Grey, Harrow Lake, The Ghoul by Brian Keene, Black Chalk by Christopher Yates, The Good Son by Yu-jong Chong(thanks for the recommendation), The Last Harvest by Kim Liggett, The Godsend by Bernard Taylor, Ritualistic Human Sacrifice by CV Hunt, The Deep by Nick Cutter and You'll Never Know Dear by Hallie Ephron. I will probably be adding more as different horror recommendation videos come out, lol, cuz I am a sucker for all horror!

The first vampire story is said to be The Vampyre by John William Polidori and was written in the same night as Frankenstein because Polidori, Byron and the two Shelleys spent the summer together. The myth behind the making of those stories is a whole Gothic story in itself. Those Dracula and Frankenstein editions look great!

Dracula wasn’t the first vampire book but it is what kinda started the whole vampire literature tradition and influenced a lot of vampire stories that came after! I know somebody already commented this but I had a whole class on vampire literature in Uni last semester and it was my favorite thing ever and I rarely get to talk about it lol. Also @ that other comment - we read Carmilla in that class too and i loveddd it, so so great and very gay indeed

I loved your music intro! Frankenstein was one of my favorite required reading books from high school too! That ARC for Harrow Lake looks so cool :D And I love love love The Girl from the Well! It's actually pitched as The Ring meets The Grudge meets The Exorcist. I mentioned it in my Finally Fall Book Tag, along with the sequel, The Suffering (which is set in Japan's suicide forest). Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it. And it is a scary book!

Dracula begins with a guy writing in his journal as he goes about his train journey and describing all the food he eats on the way. I find it really amusing as it's like a classical version of a modern blog, but it's really slow paced and I always get distracted before I can finish 🔪
