A southbound Northern Line train 1995 stock arrives and departs London Bridge. The sound coming from the tunnel is quite spooky but amazing.

Imagine that with the rattling of a 38 stock approaching. As a kid I made my dad lift me up and hold me tight as it came thundering into the station. Angel station was the worst. It was like being in a chamber of horrors. When I was 17 my Dad said:"you're too heavy".

Always gives me goosebumps, I remember the first time I went with my family to London back in the late 90's, I was terrified of the thought of getting on the tube because it looked like a rollercoaster... silly I know, but that's what you do when you're a kid. I love this sound because it has so many feelings and emotions attached to it, along with the smell you feel like hundreds of years of history beneath London are being woken up!

It's a mixture of air being pushed down the tunnel ahead of the train and the sounds echoing off the walls and interfering with each other (they're waves after all). You'll notice the sound is louder in summer. I love this sound.

In Glasgow, our subway makes some amount of noise when trains approach due to the smaller size of the tunnel portals (gauge is only 4ft), heightened by the screech of the elderly brakes on these 1979 met-cam made sets. Used to scare me to tears as a kid, but as an adult, I adore these now and love the half-hour circular trip in these characteristic trains (soon to be replaced by Stadlers though, sadly!).

When i visited London in March i was surprised how scary and depressing the underground looks like. In Hungary we have bigger, open stations, no these kinds that basically push you near the train. It's weird.

When I was young me and brother always went up the the edge to see the trains leave. We would always hear the sounds of nearby trains echoing in the tunnel. So creepy…
@FMasterMCPEG3 жыл бұрын
That is pretty normal because the breaks creates that Creaky sound and the train engine creates the screaming sound The pitch decreases in arrival and The pitch increases in departure and the whispering sound is the actual sound of the train if the tracks are joint perfectly and if you've noticed the tracks are actually a ballastless plinth tracks that is why we did not hear Clickety-clack... sound that is the reason why we hear that whispering sound that is sounds like a ghost whispering on you ear. SKL.

Same sound in New York/New Jersey PATH stations. Air currents and sound traveling through the rails. Anyone who uses subway/underground/tube on a regular basis will be well used to these sounds and may even be able to tell things like speed and direction of travel just from the noise and the particular feel of the blast of air comong down the tunnel.
