Yeah, most people view him a good, but not as good as he really was. The fact that he wasn’t an underdog and wasn’t too charismatic didn’t help, especially compared to arch-rival Senna. The 80s and early 90s in general were mad in the amount of talent you had on the grid.

@@njaco08 Lauda was out for six weeks after his accident, he finished second in the 1976 championship despite his injuries, he won the 1977 championship and retired after 1978. He came out of retirement with Mclaren and won a third title in 1984. Burning half to death kept him down for less than two months, the guy was a stone cold badass.

@@FunTimeGhz Which is true, but you forgot the impact Schumacher had on the cars development. When he came to Ferrari, they had a rather subpar car. The season before Schumachers arrival, they were 5th/6h. Then 1996 Schumacher got 3rd while Irvine got 10th with just 11 points. 1997 Irvine was just 7th and Schumacher fought for the title. Starting with 1998 it paid of and Ferrari had seriously good cars. Same with Mercedes. As lackluster as Schumachers results were at Mercedes, people stressed multiple times how behind they were and how much his impact and insight on the cars development and teams improvement helped them. Shame he never got to drive with the results of it since they decided for the talented Hamilton. Of course it was the right decision. Still it's a shame.

Jimmy Clark won 1/3 of His F1 world Championship races. But in those days there were many F1 races that were not part of the WC, in which case his win rate was 50%+,, then there was Indianapolis, the Tasman series, Touring Cars etc. He won in everything, so streets ahead of all others.

The top 10 based on the pecntage of wins are 1) Fangio 47.1% 2)Ascari 40.6% 3) Hamilton 35.8% 4) Clark 34.7 % 5)Schumacher 29.6 % 6) Stewart 27.3 % 7)Prost 25.6 % 8) Senna 25.5 % 9) Moss 23.2% 10) Damon Hill and Vettell 19.1 %. Cars were much less reliable in the old days though. Jim Clark had 26 races where he had no problems with malfunctions/ accidents etc. He won 25 of those and finished 2nd in the other one.

I agree with others here that had the likes of Fangio and Stewart raced in the modern era with more races to compete in their total would have been higher. The greatest tragedy is Jim Clark who died at 32 years old in 1968. He never even reached his peak. He left others in the dust. Still the only man to win Indianapolis 500 and the F1 Championship in the same season. Both Fangio and Senna thought Clark was the best driver of all time. Clark's records are amazing given how few races there were and also how unreliable the cars were back then and also more dangerous too. Nothing should be taken away from Schumacher, Prost, Senna and Hamilton of course for they deserve their accolades. But Jim Clark was the most natural driver and the best of all time.

I don't think % of wins is a great way to measure greatness in formula one. There are way too many variables such as how good is the car he drives, the level of competition, unforeseen circumstances like car failure forced DNF's, etc. I do believe only the drivers who have raced in formula 1 can truly define the the greatness of a driver and not some stat. Especially if u wanna know who is the greatest driver since the turn of century till today, no better driver to ask than a guy like Kimi raikonnen as he has raced em all for almost 2 decades now.But then again, knowing Kimi, he would pick himself as the best😂

Even more so considering he only entered 51 races and was in his 40's when he won his titles, 46 when he won his 5th title. His legendary win at Nurburgring in 1957 might be the best drive ever. Was third and then somehow got into a higher gear by slicing several seconds(!) off the Nurburgring lap record lap after lap, as he went ever faster. Passed Collins and Hawthorn on the last lap and won. The aforementioned drivers were the first to congratulate him for what *they* believed was the most incredible drive ever.

What people need to know is that back in the fifties, there wasn't 20 races per year so Fangio's record is simply stunning. In the eighties, there were only 12 races per year so Prost's record is just amazing too.

Amazing, 1st place Lewis Hamilton already doubled the 3rd place Prost. I could never watch Senna, but in my youth almost all the time I was hearing on radio and\or TV news again and again "and the winner is Ayrton Senna" so often that I was thinking no one else could win this race (RIP Senna).

I think this chart really justifies Prost’s purpose to being consider one of, if not the best driver of all time. First to break, 30, 40 and 50 Gran Prix wins. Statistics alone show his driving was beyond his time.

@@kg0173that is exactly my point: Brabham was not the best car, and yet Nelson Piquet was able to win two world titles driving a Brabham. That, my freind, says a whole lot! Schumi and Hamilton are great pilots, but they won a bunch of titles with super cars, which makes it all easier. The day Hamilton wins a world title behind the wheel of an Alpine, I will put him in the same level as Piquet.

Well... "good" and "dominant" are different things, he's a good driver yes, but since 2015 the only competition he's had has been his teammate, his car was/is so much better than everyone else's that the statistics for the last six years mean practically nothing now.

@@TheMrTiegs I would say he would get 50 to 60 wins, not more than that. Since he was 34 I would say he had a good 8 years max out of an F1 career. I would imagine him winning the championship at least 5 times (he had 3 in 94, he could probably get 2 more out of those 8 years until 2002), and getting like 65 wins easily, even though there was a fierce schumacher in the middle I believe he wouldn't reach Schumacher's numbers just due to the fact that he entered F1 already at 24, whilst schumacher started at 22. The numbers would be less for schumacher, as well as the number of titles (or not, who knows), but yeah I would see senna with 5 titles and 60 wins +

Not to mention that he did it while driving cars with no downforce,powersteering or semi-automatic gearboxes etc. and with no safety features what so ever in the cars and the tracks also had none at all etc.The drivers back then had about 2/3 chance of not making it alive out of the F1 season.

Hamilton é um ponto fora da curva, já estreou com um carro que lhe permitia ganhar, vetel teve um carro competitivo cedo Tbm... Os demais seguiram o natural, que é demorar alguns anos até ter um carro competitivo... Com relação aos números do Senna/Piquet/Mansel/Prost, acho que o que mais impacta é que os carros de antes quebravam muito, se esses caras tivesse carros confiáveis como os de hoje seus números seriam melhores...

Everyone is comparing their preferred driver with others, it's a moo point! Sadly we will never have the top 20 of this list in the same car fighting the same championship. The comparison you all crave for is not possible! The greater question is whether it matters? For me it doesn't, I'm just glad to be part of this lifetime seeing all those great champions achieving greatness. Keep in mind, you don't have to choose one, you can still recognise their individual achievements and support them all.

If it was just about the car then roseberg and bottas could win half of the championships. That's a dumb statement to say schumacher , vettel , prost or senna didn't have the best car and it's just lewis.

Looking at this now as of Hungary 2021, Hamilton would move up to first with 103 wins Verstappen would join the list with 28 wins, moving him up to 8th, with every driver below dropping a place and Raikkonen falling out altogether
