I live in Portugal, and football can be a life or death matter here. We have literal riots in our squares whenever a football team bus is passing by, so things are usually barricaded and the police is usually wearing riot gear. People yell and scream, whilst opposite team fans fight over their teams and shit just hits the fan, really. In fact, sometimes, if you were born here or have lived here for a long time, one of the questions people will ask is “So what is your football team?” when first meeting you, and if they’re one of the more extreme fans, they might decide not to associate with you anymore or even argue with you because of that. Friendships have been made or broken over this, it can get pretty ridiculous.
