I've slowly been coming to this same conclusion. Same can be said to any form of lifting weights where the individual prioritizes the amount they lift. The focus should be on the body not external results.

I'm not saying don't lift more. That's still part of the overall goal to become stronger but numbers should come as a result of strength gained rather than sacrificing the quality of technique to get artificial results.

For me, the day I discovered that not liking sports did not equal disliking exercise was revelatory. I always moved as a kid- dancing, biking, roller blading, monkey bars etc. Just hated, hated the competition that is embedded in a lot of sports. As an adult, yoga and dancing and biking and hiking have brought back this joy. And I am totally uninterested in comparing my "performance" to anyone else (or even myself).

Sports are a competition of bodily functionality, not exercise. It amazes me that we don't teach this to school kids regularly, as health of body is just as important as health of mind. For example: when I pursue strength or bodybuilding goals, I do not do it in the name of health, but rather that of achievement. pros and cons. It's about as simple as that.

To exercise properly, (at all, but especially for years), one must consider an "uncomfortable" level of effort to be desirable, even fascinating, certainly not boring. It's unrealistic to think that the average person will ever have that frame of mind.

Agree they are not the same, but you do get exercise while playing sports with the added benefit of fun. Not all sports have the high risk of injury as contact football. Risk reward should be weighed in both sport and exercise selection.
