I’m so glad that traditional Karate is seeing more light these days. There is so much to be given and so much to be gained from this discipline. I own my fortunate life to it. My best wishes to all those that follow the way. Thanks.

M. Yahara has returned Shotokan to the same roots as Okinawan karate where there it was & still is a combat art developed for fighting in the real world where defeat usually meant death. I was fortunate to spend thirteen years with a similar old school Japanese Sensei who also taught that karate was not a game, he certainly did that during our kumite encounters where I never left without a cut or bruise, the big one was once getting a gyakuzuki in the face, three stitches, lots of blood & a mild concussion. Strange as it may sound, I never had a fear of fighting anyone after that.

Flew to England to train under him (among others) in the the 80s. Was nervous the following week, knowing the Types of classes he put on. He liked me after the first 20 minutes because I would always finish first during the 20 minutes of duck waddles up and down the gym floor. Two blew out their knees. “Like” I put mildly, because he would beat on me during his demonstrations following the duck waddles. Those were the years !!! Most of the greats are gone. @The-Travel-Man2 жыл бұрын
Nah, stay with Uechi-ryu, it has something Shotokan has never had: soft power, conditioning, Sanchin. Shotokan has nothing on Uechi's conditioning. Uechi and Goju are the soft/hard power styles that are much more suited for older folks. This master surely has a lot of rotator cuff problems, look at his Jodan and Uke strikes.. He is all hard power and tension.

@@burntrim yes. But very unrealistic way of training for today. Back then, for Okinawan natives who were under rules of oppressive samurais from the main land, this was matter of survival. So deflecting the incoming attack, then lethal strike to eyes or groin, they must have practiced the drill at least few hundreds times everyday to prepare for the day might come. But this day, nobody can dedicate time to train like that so, more human body mechanic friendly sports like boxing, wrestling which can be trained more naturally thrive. The early days of ufc, u can see many traditional martial artists had no clue how their trained skill would work. The purpose of many moves were lost in generations.
@burntrim Жыл бұрын
@@Tko_Seven This obsession with UFC, as if it is the be all and end all. Not everybody wants to do UFC. If I were a younger man and wanted to do UFC I wouldn't train in karate purely because by the time I'd understand it I'd be 50! Karate is a very controlled way of learning to defend yourself, without getting your head pummelled week in week out. You still get hurt, but not as bad. It wasn't devised for UFC. Some practitioners of karate have gone on to be successful in UFC and that's up to them. It's not which martial art is the best, it's which martial art do you want to do. I do think grappling and throwing should be allowed in karate competitions, I don't understand why it's not, if only for adults. And of course, good teachers, they make a big difference. I think that straight right, right leg you first talked about, in a relaxed fighting form, would look similar to a boxer, like a jab. Basics ( kihon ) looks different, it builds muscle/stretching/stamina/ works well in large classes. Kumite ( freestyle ) is more like a free fighting style. I suppose if a karateka wanted to be in the Olympics he would be restricted with his style but again, not everybody wants to go to the Olympics. I don't think they can now anyway, as from what I hear it all went tits up!
@Tko_Seven Жыл бұрын
@@burntrim oi zuki is not jab. They are very very different. It is intended for lethal strike or grab with covering distance after blocking with your left side. I used ufc as example as thats the only current one from the old school days that didnt stop. I would say pride fc was closer to real fights as ground kicks were allowed. Yes it is free choice up to people whatever they like to do for their hobby, sports. I am just focusing on the original purpose of martial arts. In the name of "martial" it shows what it is. Some people, all of sudden, talk about respect and discipline to defend some ineffective martial arts. One can learn respect and discipline in calligraphy class as well. Throws in karate, yes itd be good.

Boxers wear gloves. Are you suggesting an individual goes to two clubs ( boxing and wrestling/judo/jujitsu ) four times a week, for at least 5-10 years ( min ) just to be effective on the street? That's a lot of commitment for an event that might not even happen ( police/security aside )
