As a Flames fan I remember this trade very vividly, and from our POV I feel that it was a deal of wild desperation - Calgary started 2009-10 really hot (an ominous blown 5-goal lead to Chicago in October aside) but by December had cooled a bit, and in January they entered a total free fall, losing 9 straight - 3 being shootout losses - going into January 30. Then they finally snap the losing streak with a 6-1 win over Edmonton (who Calgary _swept_ that season, one of their only highlights) on Hockey Night in Canada, and then the next day the deal goes down seemingly out of nowhere, at least to me. How'd it work out? Sometimes I've joked to friends that we "won" the deal just on the fact that Stajan stayed in Calgary for a good 8 years while every other piece had been dealt or otherwise moved on, but honestly I really think that for all the hype it was kind of a wash - neither team really improved _that_ much with what they acquired, I feel. I know my Flames at least treaded water the next few years, despite dealing their #1 defenseman they made it clear that they were _not_ rebuilding, instead sticking with the aging Iginla & Kiprusoff core for a few more seasons, hoping for a surprise playoff appearance that never came to be; and while the Leafs _did_ make the playoffs with Dion once, well... yeah. It was common at the time to see people compare it to the Doug Gilmour trade 18 years prior, but aside from being between the same teams and being at the same time of year I really don't think there's much of a comparison to be made - _neither_ team really improved in 2010 the way Toronto did in 1992. (Y'all should totally do that trade tree someday though, just sayin')
@kirant3 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that the details from the Flames perspective make this trade very interesting. I think in the course of 2(?) weeks, the Flames punted out both Phaneuf and Jokinen for a pile of spare parts. Stajan worked out and has had some fan favourite moments (penalty shot goal after losing his son, series winning goal against Vancouver)...but the Flames (more accurately, Sutter likely) hit the panic button after building a "playoff" team and seemed to take every trade available. Even if the players coming back weren't that good. A rumbling at the time was that quite a few GMs were quite upset at Sutter over the Phaneuf trade because they thought they could top the Leafs' offer. And, seeing what came out of it, I don't think I can disagree. But at the same time, the Flames would have made out like bandits had they gotten those other rumoured deals. The Flames/Leafs trade does feel like a wash and, when the best piece the Flames got was a role player with some memorable goals, it seems almost inconsequential at the end of the day in terms of impact on the on-ice product.

Phaneuf was the ultimate professional despite the daily media craziness he faced in Toronto.
