for that to happen, byfield/stutzle's career, on its own, would have to be superior to the combined careers of jason spezza and zdeno chara. whichever one you draft, you are asking him to be a player on the level of crosby, ovechkin, malkin, or mcdavid. you are asking him to be worth more than the combined value of a #1 center and a #1 defenseman with 20 year careers, the latter of which is likely to make it into the hall of fame. but according to you, if it didn't happen in the last 10 years, it didn't happen at all. i bet you think crosby and mcdavid are the best players who ever played for the teams they're on, too.
@ItJustHappened14 жыл бұрын
I see your point but you are wrong about one thing. The ultimate goal is the cup, so if this Karlsson trade brings us the key elements to winning the cup, it then becomes our greatest trade. Byfield has the potential to be better than Spezza but it’s way too early to be sure. I agree that he won’t be better than the combined skill of Chara and Spezza, however that might not be necessary. The fact that they dodged a bullet not getting stuck in cap hell with Karlssons god awful contract is a factor in this trade. Then there’s also many other pieces like Norris who has the potential of a top 6 or maybe the second round pick turns out. Time will tell.

Ottawa obtaining Karlsson for Chet Pickard & Taylor Beck should be up there. Or shipping off Brian Elliot for Craig Anderson. These 2 trades alone showed how well Ottawa drafted over the years as they turned the second last pick in the '03 draft (who played 130 games for the team as a goaltender) into their starting goaltender for the next decade, and gambled to trade up to get who was once considered the 3rd best hockey player in the league for an 85-games plugger and an AHL goalie. @Wexter00833 жыл бұрын
The Tarasenko trade while rough also needs the context of the Runblad for Turris trade. And for the Zibanejad trade (which I remind you took Zbad a couple years to get going in New York as his first two years... not very good and his advance stats are still not great for a 1st line centerman) you also need to take into a account the Brassard for Gustavsson Trade. So yeah Ottawa lost out on Tarasenko, but got their 1st line centre in Turris who was a key part of that 2017 run. And sure Brassard regressed fast, but Ottawa may have just got their future star goalie in Gustavsson... so.. yeah.
