The NHL rule book is heavily weighted against any shenanigans with broken sticks. I presume this is to discourage any sort of attempt to find a loophole. Everyone should know by now that if there is a broken stick on the ice, avoid it like the plague.
@noahadams5694
@noahadams5694 5 жыл бұрын
The funny part is what he did wasn’t techniacally against the rules. He didn’t knock the stick at the puck, he knocked the stick at where the puck was going there’s a difference.
@philipgwyn8091

@@noahadams5694 I also think he knocked the stick before the pass was made.
@HousewolfDaddy
@HousewolfDaddy 3 жыл бұрын
@@noahadams5694 The rules are pretty liberal about what’s considered “towards the puck”, and unless it’s been updated it also includes “towards an opposing player”. There’s also the rule that separately makes it a penalty if you do anything but gently clear a broken stick to the wall from close range. There’s about 10 different things they explicitly say you cannot do with a broken stick, everything else is covered under the general rule of if you break your stick you must immediately drop it where you stand or leave the ice, or the rule about throwing equipment into the play. Players know you’re not allowed to shoot broken sticks or play them in any way unless it has zero impact on the play as mentioned before- and even that is technically a grey area but refs will allow it if it clears it out of the playing area with no risk of hitting another skater or the puck. It’s not a novel new rule. No matter whether it’s USA Hockey, Hockey Canada, SIF, or FIHA, they all grew up playing with those rules from youth all the way til pros. I don’t know Russia’s rule differences to the same degree, since they don’t often work with the other programs at clinics and the like, such as the ones I mentioned, but I doubt it’s going out on a limb that they also have relatively the same rules when it comes to what the players would have learned growing up.
@HousewolfDaddy
@HousewolfDaddy 3 жыл бұрын
@@philipgwyn8091 He did, I would agree. That doesn’t change anything as far as the rules are concerned. Playing a broken stick (or other object), or throwing any object “towards another player or the puck”, is and has been illegal for as long as these guys have all played hockey. You’re also responsible for your own actions, so even if the puck wasn’t there yet, you can clearly read that he does it with the intent to block a passing lane. If I was the ref I’d just say he played an illegal object into the play, since that’s all they need to establish. Moving a broken stick or fallen glove/helmet in any way is technically illegal, though they often will allow it if it’s just getting it to the boards from close range, and it is soft enough/with enough space that there’s no risk of it hitting another player (and nowhere near the puck). There’s a lot of rule changes I think are bullshit, and other rules I think are just dumb. This isn’t one of them. There are very valid safety reasons for not allowing illegal equipment to be played intentionally by players. Even if the stick itself doesn’t fly up and hit someone, the most likely scenario here is that shooting the stick into the passing lane causes a player to be hit in the face by a deflection. Since it’s made to cover all scenarios though, I don’t think it can or should change.

@My Cat's Breath Smells Like Cat Food there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the goalie leaving the net to bring on a skater at that time or any other. Technically a team could play an entire 60 minute game with 6 skaters and no goalie. Go review the rules yourself and see. The only way this should be a pelanty (and it was brought up by by someone else in this thread) is the lack of stoppage in play. This was still a genius play by Dubnyk.

The whole penalty shot thing I’m honestly okay with. As a player, you know you can’t shoot a stick into the play- and really most players do know that it’s a penalty shot for shooting or throwing an object towards the puck. Where I would be fighting against it is if a stick broke and the player got called for a penalty shot because he dropped his stick and the other team tried to pass right through it as it falls (but that already shouldn’t be called as long as the refs follow the rules). As for why Sam Steel took the shot- there is no rule saying the player who takes a penalty shot had to be the affected player. Now that I could see being an interesting change possibly (but not necessary), just because you’d get more variety in the shooters, but the rules allow the coach to choose any skater from the ice to take the shot. The idea behind it being that if a team decides to do something dumb like that and say the targeted a 4th line grinder who’s only out to keep a lead at the end of the game- there’s less incentive to target that player and just have multiple penalty shots to avoid giving up a big play because they might have TJ Oshie from the Olympics whatever year that was with the ridiculous 7 attempt shootout because he was like 70% in shootouts that year or Alex Ovechkin, or Connor McDavid, or Nathan MacKinnon- and you’re not going to want to give those guys even one chance never mind multiple.

Dubnyk with the 2000 IQ move over there. I think refs get a bit of leeway to not blow the whistle if the puck is out of the zone on a net off the moorings, so if Minnesota had scored it probably would have counted. Honestly the only dangit about the play was Minnesota taking the too many men cause they didn't realize his play. Also Reinhart was going off for a change while he scored a goal. You can tell after he dumped it in he took a step towards the bench. Absolute legend.

The refs should judge the way the penalty effects the play by what happens next. For instance, if the player disrupts the pass with the broken stick, let the play keep going. If the person receives the pass and takes a shot and hits the Goalie or goes within the crease then it should be a penalty shot. But if the player doesn't take a shot or it doesn't reach the crease, then it should be a 2 or 4 minute minor.
