Great work, Ed, looking forward to part 3! Tip for you - instead of oiling the piston rings just put a very light coating of wd40 on the bores - it helps them bed in properly and quickly when you fire it up! 👍🏻

An alternator is a self-contained, external unit that produces DC with electro-magnets. A stator is a stationary part of a rotary generating system and they typically use permanent magnets. Stators are also contained inside whatever is generating the power, like your sportster in this example.

@avghphut2 ай бұрын
Must say, @ed_the_brit, great content. I don't know where you broadcast from, but I did notice your use of Fahrenheit instead of Celsius (as my colleagues east of the pond do), and so if nothing else wanted to give you props for aligning your temperature units with your motorcycle ;) Re alternator vs stator, the above is accurate. An alternator contains a stator ("stat"ionary part of the windings). Cars can package all the electrical components to get DC into that one housing. Motorcycles typically didn't have the space and spread the stator, rectifier, and voltage regulator around where they could. Confusingly, in the auto-world, the voltage regulator can appear either within or outside of an alternator (so whether or not a V/R is in the alt it's still an alt). For added fun, cars didn't use to have alternators, they had generators. The generator used a commutator that made mechanical contact with brushes to generate DC from AC whereas the advent of the alternator introduced the solid state "rectifier" diodes for much more reliability. I had to refresh my memory on all this based on your question, so thanks for that and keep up the excellent content. Really well done.

@@Ed_the_BritWell, I mean I can't speak for anyone else, but I as a semi new rider, especially one just barely starting to work on my own bike, I have had a hard time finding detailed videos for things like how to properly remove a rear and front tire? Because when I do see videos like those, I always have tons of more questions that they never answer. How do I know how much tension to leave on the belt? What tool do I need to know that? Do I have to bleed the brakes before taking the off? Videos like these exist of basic maintenance things, but nobody does them that well in my opinion. I often still feel left with questions and still hesitant to do them to my bike because I don't feel confident that I know everything I need to yet haha. Especially when I will be riding it, you know. Not something I want to really screw up on. Anyway, that's my two sense! Cheers dude!
