I will probably post more on this topic than usual since I have been painting for 25 years and in the industry for over 30. Nitrile...NEVER EVER LATEX....you are spot on with that. Warming up the paint is an old painters trick I still do this and some epoxy paints you have to let them sit for 20 minutes before spraying. That paint hit the market a few years ago and I use it also at times. You can actually put different base color in the cans. So lets say you paint your care with PPG and you can actually have the paint store put your paint into an aerosol can and use it later for projectcs.

Not a safety sally at all but one quick note on your respirator, those pink filters are only meant for particulates. They're definitely better than nothing but especially for the solvents in paint and doubly so for hardened paint, I recommend looking into the organic vapor cartridges that work with that mask, 3M# 6001. They also make prefilters for it so that they don't clog as fast. And a light first coat/tack coat is a good idea, it helps keep your first heavy coat from running

Cyocanates, probably didn't spell that right, are in anything sprayed that has a hardener mixed in they are not filtered out by charcoal filters. The only way to combat them is a fresh air system. The biggest problem is they build over time and are cancer causing. Charcoal only works for particulates.

The exhaust from those salamander heaters can cause fish eyes in paint. And explosions with flammable vapors. Your shop is large enough I doubt it would be concentrated enough, guys with small shops need to watch out. Not knocking your work at all, that came out awesome!

another great job, but never paint with an open flame in the shop, the flash-over that occurs will melt the skin off your body before you hit the floor. heat up the room, shut down the flame, paint your project, then open all doors for 2 or 3 minutes ( not enough to cool down the metal) then fire up the heaters again. or get a bomb-proof heating system.

Nate this was another great video. Really enjoy your videography style. Kudos for the quick safety reminder in the beginning of the video. That is a mark of a true professional. The rack turned out awesome. I was really curious about the Eastwood 2-part paint. I follow their channel as well. This as a more in depth video with the product. Hopefully the Eastwood guys see your video. Would be smart for them to sponsor your channel. Seems like a win-win proposition! Thanks again from a fellow PNW resident!

Enjoying your channel too. I second that comment regarding the filters. For paint go with the yellow organic ones. An example is 3M Safety 6001 Low-Maintenance Organic Vapor Cartridge. The magenta ones are a HEPA rated particulate filter for dust. They take out airborne contaminants down to like 0.3 microns. And maybe the MAPP gas can shouldn't be so close to the wood burning stove, LOL. I like to put a box fan in a window blowing the inside air out to create some air movement. Some paint fumes can be explosive as well, so be careful with open flames or hot embers around a build up of some types of paint fumes. Heck, even turning off the lights can create a small spark and cause an explosion from flammable fumes. I'm learning from you, especially the welding videos, so don't blow yourself up.

I actually was trained to use this epoxy paint years ago, in the early 90's. Has come a long way to have it in spray cans. It's actually a paint used to paint aircraft. Strongest paint you can get. But the thing on using primer first, you do not need primer for this paint, it's a sales gimmick, sorry. Well, if it is true epoxy paint, that is. So if it is actual epoxy paint then the primer you sprayed on was the same paint as the base paint with a different color.

DO NOT THROW SAID FILTER IMMEDIATELY IN THE TRASH. Sorry for all caps, but warranted in this case. The paint-soaked filter flashes (exothermic reaction) and can catch fire. I found this out when I opened the trashcan to throw away the second filter and was greeted with a Backdraft (1991 movie) type scene (well, to me at least). Luckily I have extinguishers scattered everywhere and only melted some trashbags.

I would add Body Seam Sealer to the inside of the rack where the plate is welded to the tubing to seal out dirt and mud, and to make sure rust does not form where the paint cannot reach. I would also seal the top between stitch welds if it is not weld all along the edge. The sealer comes in a caulking tube so you can apply it with a common caulking gun. Do not use Aveco brand caulking because it maybe hardened in the tube. My favorite is 3M brand, but it is about $45 a tube. Napa has good body seam sealer for around $15. I found that one fresh (not hardened in the tub) and very workable. I bead it on like caulking then squish it in and smooth it out with a finger and clean the excess and mess with lacquer thinner, acetone, or carb cleaner. It can be painted with self etch primer, regular primer, cheap rattle can paint, or two part epoxy paint. If you decide to a bracket or whatever you can dig out the immediate area to weld with a screw driver or scraper then grind clean your metal and weld. Make sure to re-apply seam sealer to nooks and crannies. I may take a bit of practice to work it but you will have a job that does not start leaking rust from the nooks and crannies. For funzzies, I laid a bead that ends in a point on one end and fashioned a head on the other end and painted it to look like a snake once the caulking sealer dried. You could also lay a bead in "squirts" to resemble a weld bead. Once you begin playing with it you can get as creative as you allow your mind.

Good video and its probably not an safety issue considering the size of your shop and your using rattle cans but seeing you lite up the torpedo heater and wood burning stove made me cringe just a little. Paints, solvents, and propellants are flammable. Everything i paint is in the booth and when i need to warm things up i have explosion proof heat lamps that really do a good job. Safety first. Cant stress that enough

A good little trick for time between coats is to spray a test patch at the same time anything from a bit of extra masking tape to some card anything, and touch it when you think its time if the paint sticks and strings its still to wet wait a little longer until its tacky to the touch but doesn't string reduces, the chances of runs massively

Yes for sure 2 part epoxy primers & paints are harder, also are less susceptible to stains or damage from fluids such as fuel, hyd fluid, lubricants, ect. As with aircraft paints , there is usually a 15-30 min dwell time, after mixing / before application

Dude, love the channel, don’t mean to be a downer, but you need a respirator for vapours. The plastic cartridges protect your lungs from chemicals, those pink ones are only for dust. Also remember that vapour cartridges are only good for 8 hours of use, then the activated carbon inside them becomes saturated and you need to swap them out. Keep making awesome shit man, love it!!

If you paint in the shop, a fine layer of paint will get on EVERYTHING. Paint outside if the weather is good. A great alternative to a real paint booth is to use one of the Harbor Freight portable sheds or garages, at less than $200. An old camping tent can even be used. I haven’t seen the 2 part epoxy in rattle cans before. For the price, you are way ahead to buy epoxy paint in quarts or gallons and shoot it with a gun. Even a cheap Harbor Freight gun probably sprays better than those rattle cans.

So you have the heater with an open flame running while you're filling your shop up with explosive/flammable vapors from the rattle can? IIRC, some of them use propane as a propellant to get the paint out of the can... The Rust-Oleum Industrial paint is the best I've found this side of a 2 part epoxy paint. It's in a silver can and dries even at 34* and at 50* it is dry to the touch and can be handled in about 25 min. The stuff in the white can is like water in comparison. Rust-Oleum Industrial, try some. If you buy it in the gallon can get the cheap harbor freight airless sprayer and throw it away when you're done. I used to paint my flat bed trailer and farm equipment this way and it was way cheaper than using the spray cans and much faster.

@@leokarasinski4217 one of may neighbors ended up in a burn unit while rattle can painting his S-10 and the same style heater lit up the vapors. He ended up with burns in his lungs, face, hands and upper body and lost his house. Also if your going be running one of those make sure to have a Carbon Monoxide detector in the shop to make sure you don't poison yourselves. I do HVAC for a living and carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke. I have a couple of the portable propane heaters, and I won't run them without the detector in my work areas. Stay safe.

I also worked in the oil and gas industry and I have had to perform after action reports on accidents resulting in injury, death or property damage. Biggest cause was people thinking what they were doing couldn't cause an issue because they had done _________ a bunch of times and nothing bad had happened, so why worry about it? I've had to explain to families and friends why their loved one is no longer with us. The vast majority of the time was ignoring safety process and procedures. I do t want anyone to have to deal with wholely preventable "accidents".

Not a fan of powder coat! If there's one single blister from poor factory prep, usually by the time you see it, the rust has spread far. Then it's all sanding, the whole thing, sucks! I've also had good luck w/ a single stage rattle can of "appliance paint" by Rustoleum. Very durable , lays out great, take about two days to fully cure though. Put cardboard down on your bench or plastic however the problem with plastic is you can have a static charge with it. I use cardboard a bunch whenever I work in a greasy project most body shops will give you large boxes if you ask them. Not usually an issue but there is always that one freak accident. For the most part you are right on the money with painting. If your ever in Portland stop on by and I will give you a tour of the shop. You will get to see TESLA cars being repaired it will blow your mind. Those cars are mostly rivets of all kinds and panel bonded panels together. Silicone bronze welders, nitrogen welders for plastic repairs also.

Nate Nice intro for the safety items. One thing I added when I paint is a few box fans with a 20”x20” furnace filter over it. These suck the air where you are spraying and grab the paint particles so you don’t breath them in. Cleans the air. And controls where the particles go. So they are a lot less likely to land on nearby finished projects. Who needs black over spray on their tan Jeep.

Alot of good tips in this video. There's been a ton of stuff I've learned from you. I have a few suggestions though, I would look into getting a full face respirator to use when painting along with some organic vapor cartridges. Bc even though you wore glasses the fumes and overspray can still get around them and enter your body through your eyes. I know a few paint and body guys and that's what they use when painting and use a mask like the one you wore when doing body work. I depaint aircraft and we are required to use full face masks with organic vapor cartridges. I've also noticed that some higher end shops I've been to and some custom car builders on tv actually use supplied air masks/helmets, so fresh breathing air is actually pumped into the mask/helmet from a source outside the booth or a small filtered unit on a belt that they strap around their waist and also wear coveralls while painting bc like you said it can soak in through skin. I must agree with the others also saying a heater with an open flame wasn't the best thing to be using while painting bc the chance of it lighting off the fumes.

Nate, I have that respirator, it's not for paint. Its only a particulate mask. I use it for welding and grinding since it fits under my hood. Same respirator will take filters with charcoal to stop the paint chems that will kill you! As in you shouldn't smell the paint through the respirator. I am just as bad "Ye ol hold yur bref" and walk away method lots of times. At least your wearing long sleeves, hell I rarely wear anything but a T-shirt and shorts! I have settled on the HF 7mil gloves being a good balance of durability, cost and don't hurt my hands from being so stiff, I wear them ALL the time! Easy clean up, saves me time at the sink etc. I keep a baggy of them in the Jeep, never know why your going to need them. I REALLY want to try that paint! I am curious as to how it holds up and how much does it cost. I would like to build a "paint booth" IE a small enclosed area with filtration and heat to keep it off of everything else without having to be outside. Something portable would be nice. Great video... Almost forgot, try some of those "painting cones" or triangles they sell at home improvement stores, they allow for a little tiny point of contact on your part, I like them! I also have a dislike for over spray so I bag my jack stands with used grocery bags. Picky huh LOL Again, enjoyed the video, thank you.

Nice video Nate. Couple of tips though. Rather than use aerosol prep, purchase a gallon of Wax & Grease remover and apply to a paper towel and wipe. Much cheaper in the long run and actually easier to use. I will wipe down prior to applying primer and then again just before paint if it happens to sit overnight or longer. Also if you hang your work with mechanics wire it allows better coverage then you don’t have to go back and hit the missing areas. Lastly, and this may just be me, but placing garbage bags over your jack stands keeps the unsightly overspray off of your jack stands. Personally I hate overspray on my tools and equipment. Mike

Great video. A good tip also is to use adhesion promoter. After you get all of your prep done as best as possible a couple coats of that really helps your finish product be free from fish eyes and makes the areas that are had to get into that are so common with some projects come out like you are a paint prepping genius!

With runs on a job like that I found tape works great, test a piece off 6-10 inches, use the stocky side and roll it up the run. The motion it kinda like rolling a slinky, you only ever have about 1/2 inch of tape touching at a time. Your worried about over spray on your camera, its settled on everything in your shop. I take 2 cheap box fans, tape some air furnace filters to them and place them under my garage door, I have some cardboard I close in the rest of the gaps under my door. This pulls most of the over spray out of my shop. I still use a respirator though, but this helps keep the shop things clean.

At 28 bucks a can, it would almost be cheaper to powder coat. How many cans did you use? 6?
@DirtLifestyle

I used 6. The last lumber rack I had powder coated was 650. That was discounted because I had them coat 3 racks for me. Normally 800.

At $27 a can. I don’t think the average person could justify using it on anything that would take more than a can or two. Powder coating around me must be cheap I guess though. Maybe I’m just poor idk haha. I tend to use a tiny compressor, HF Gun, rustoleum paint, and a 2k clear from my local auto paint store. Seems to me like a better long term solution if you’re finding yourself painting often. I wish I could afford this stuff tho. Would save hassle for sure. Anyway your videos got me into buying my own tube bender, which in turn has saved me money in the long run. So thanks!

Painting bare metal parts make sure you use a DTM Direct to metal Epoxy,Etch primer (zinc chromate) Be careful with etch primer it will make you have 3 eyed kids. Never put primer directly on metal you must have an etch for primer to adhere or some kind of DTM. Never let the etch primer sit outside as it can wick moisture as well. Great job though good tips. SEM has some really good products for some DIY projects. Spray max makes the cans you were using I believe.

I need to try the 2 part for sure. I use the black 9 mil gloves from HF on sale 9.99, last much longer, even wrenching, Tip for overspray, small box fan sealed blowing out paint spray, sucking fresh air through a cheap heater filter in a opening on other side of shop. keeps dust from floating around landing on projects.

Thanks for the tips! I knew most of this, but it's nice to see someone else doing it, to sort of reassure my methods. ;) Good call on the respirator. I usually paint outside if I can. There is always the risk of contaminants in the paint, but the risk to my lungs is much lower. My shop is also under my house, so all the fumes make their way up through the floorboards and nobody likes that. A good box fan or two helps when I have to paint in the garage.

Also, there is no replacement for fresh air to protect you. Check the weather. (Never paint in high humidity unless you wait a ratherlong time for coats to dry correctly) Notice the wind direction. Open the work space so that mother nature can move a gentle breeze through. Try not to overpower your heater by limiting the size of openings. Use a fan at the DOWNWIND opening. Look up venturi effect and get some science working for you. That means to back the fan away from the opening so the wind current is 50-75% of the opening size. More air will go through than the fan is pushing. This method also doesn't pick up dust from the ground and land on your fresh paint. If you try to fight mother nature with a fan, you lose. Don't fight momma.

I learned from painting a pistol and researching: paint a tack layer wait 10, spray next layer, wait until your touch leaves only a fingerprint, spray layer, wait until fingerprint. Let it dry for 3-4 days for full cure before spraying any clear coat layers. (Clear goes on the same as pigment paint) The 2 paint types dry at different rates and the clear seals in the pigment paint solvent that is trying to leave. This makes for a soft paint product for a long time. Handling this soft paint with your hands introduces oils and dirt which makes the process of drying practically stop. The pistol I painted is my DAILY concealed appendix carry (it touches my skin and gets oils, sweat, and dirt directly on the entire left side) weapon and has not rubbed off, gotten gummy, or smeared colors together. There is no difference between the left and right sides. Believe me, I was worried, but this is the paint method I will use in the future. Now I have to research epoxy paints! Commence losing 4 hours of my life...

Looks fantastic! I immediately went to the Eastwood website to see if they had that paint in silver, they did not. I'm buying an off-road bumper for my 2008 FJ Cruiser and I didn't want it to be black, like most companies will powder coat it for you. The FJC is silver and I wanted the bumper to be silver also, just to be different. I'm curious as to how well the paint will hold up since I go off-roading as often as I can get away from work (you know how that is.....).

After all the safety precautions, I am amazed to see you using two open flame heaters at floor level while spraying in the same area. This is in violation of fire safety codes in all 50 states. Even if the paint itself isn't flammable, the propellant is. Also, I saw no ventilation equipment running. I hope you do something to mitigate the chances of injury to yourself and or loss of your shop. (Fire Investigator, 32 years). Terry

FYI 2k paint is automotive paint, harder than 1k for sure, but not powder coat hard. So if you have any doubts, just think of what your car's paint can stand, that'll be 2k paint. add a couple coats of 2k clear and it'll be even better against UV.

Those respirator cartridges are only particulate filter. It does nothing for VOC. An activated carbon VOC cartridge with a particulate prefilter is best. They are a bit more costly, and they have a shelf life once you open the package they come in.

Cant wait to see how that paint holds bc that could save me doing some touch ups later down the road than just normal spray paint

Look into cerokote.. it’s typically reserved for firearms and I’ve been wanting to try on automotive stuff to see how durable it is.. but provides a pretty nice finish to firearms that doesn’t chip and fade like normal paints but instead wears. As a result you can simply repaint wo all the normal prep. Firearm parts companies will be the best place to get and. Cost about the same as regular spray paint. Brownells is a good source. I wouldn’t call it a “hard protective finish” per say like epoxy or enamel but even epoxy and enamel paints won’t hold up on our rigs and the repaint prep will be a fraction of the time and effort.

where did you purchase the eastwood epoxy paint? im sure the reason you get so many paint requests is due to the fact rustoleom and all of your big box store spray cans are crap! the paint wants to lift, wrinkle, etc. you have so many detailed instructions, paint window times for recoat and so on. for the novice painter there is a fairly large learning curve even following the can instructions can be difficult to get a good finish with spray cans. i went to school for autobody repair was in the industry long enough to know its a better hobby than a 9-5. things are always changing. the eastwood brand is a quality brand. the two parts in a can looks pretty cool. when it comes to paint products you get what you pay for. its worth spending five times the money on better paint if you want a lasting quality paint job or you can rustoleom every three months the paint you used i have never seen! thanks im, looking forward to trying it out. if useing spray cans there is a handle you can snap to the top of spray cans and its alot more comfortable than the pushing of the spray can. its a handle trigger more like a spray gun
