Spraying Line X with premium topcoat

just a little video of what i normally do at work, still trying to get the GoPro stuck to my head in a way that you see exactly what i see. but i suck so for now this will do. but the video is me spraying bed liner in a truck then applying a topcoat.

Man your shop has great lighting lol. You can see exactly how the texture is turning out. Our bay has an offset skylight making it seem like two different textures.

How do you handle bed weep holes? Do you just spray over them? Do they clog? or do you put something in the hole so it stays open during spraying?

They can get plugged up with line x. You can drill the weeps bigger before you get it sprayed. Just be sure to coat the bare metal with something before you get it sprayed because if the holes rust from the underside it can cause a point for rust to start from the back. Hey James what's your thoughts on the Premium vs Platinum? How do they directly compare as far as durability and how does their application differ? Does it take more work to apply the Platinum?

So as for the premium vs platinum, the premium uses sx-100 base and the platinum uses sx-350 the 100 is the average spray in still durable though, then a topcoat is applied to add I nice shiny finished look and to prevent chalking and fading in uv light. Platinum has a 350 base and it's a bit more durable, will take more of a beating. It sprays a bit heavier and leaves a different texture. It's a bit more pricey now due to shortages though. But it still uses the same topcoat as the premium. Now all that said the topcoat will protect from chalking and fading over time, and it looks nice with a shiny finish. It can still show scratches because of its glossy look, but it is very tough and durable and you would find it would take lots of abuse to make it through the coating. I'd say if you have a work truck and you know it's going to take a beating maybe don't splurge for the topcoat, but if it's in your personal truck and you might put a couch or some scrap in there every once in a while then go for it. It looks nice in my opinion and does make it a bit easier to clean out since not as much can get stuck in the texture itself. Sorry for the lengthy comment. Just trying to give you as much info and advise as possible.

I’m thinking about getting this done to my 2015 Super Duty. How long does the whole spray out take? Is it usually a day turnaround or a 2 day thing for it to dry and cure?

It's usually less than a day. Normally it would take me 4 hours from pulling it in the shop, prepping, masking then spraying. And you can take it that day. You just have to let the bed fully cure for 24 hours before use.

Hey I choose Line-X over Rhino liner. Installer rushed my job after doing other work during my timeframe. Later on areas of Line-X peeled when items were pushed into bed of truck. I don’t think it was the product but the installers negligence . I recently picked up a new truck. I’m checking out another installer hoping they know what they’re doing and take Pride in their work.

There's definitely not a can you can buy, this stuff is a two part hot spray. But we've used 3m 04240 to touch up some small gouges in liners before. I'm sure you can find a cheaper two part urethane that's black that you could use. We normally put some of that in the scratch or hole and then take a scuff pad and try to add some texture to it before it sets up.

I got a gallon of Bed armor from canadian tire to repaint mine I spilled some paint on the line x . This could solve your problem for less money

Can Linex cover up holes in the bed? I paid $85K for a newer 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 Longhorn! Absolutely beautiful truck except I was upset after I purchased it when I realized the previous owner had some sort of box in the back and had drilled four 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch sized holes in the bed to mount the box. I want a Line-x bed liner to cover it up. The truck still has the factory bed-liner in it (3/16 thickness). Could Line-x dealer spray over the factory bed liner or would that need to be removed before they put a line-x bedliner in and can the holes be covered up? If so, would they tape over the holes to provide a surface until the Line-X coating cures? Please let me know so I can plan accordingly.

So you can spray over holes, but it is a point where it can eventually lift. Normally we would take aluminum tape. Like the thick foil tape and cover smaller drilled holes and such. And you can spray over a factory spray in liner. We've done plenty of them, usually it's because they had bodywork done to the vehicle and a bedside or such was repaired. But you can put a pass over the whole thing if you wanted. You just need to watch the amount of material that builds up.

@@jamesmazeika7428 Thank you for your insight. It has helped me understand the process. My whole reason to recoat the bed is due to the "unsightly" holes. I understand the potential lifting issue and one way I feel that would resolve that would be to install nylon plugs. Let me know if you think if I glued (resin) these plugs in from the top and/or bottom the Linex material would nicely adhere and cover these nylon caps with the appropriate thickness. Factory liner is just less than 1/8ths, so the application of another 1/16th or close to 1/8th should cover the caps. Let me know what you think. @@davidgore5719 to be honest you can probably get away with not using anything to fill the holes, and it's more of a lift poinor failure point because of a place where rust can form. Not so much just the line x not getting proper adhesion. I probably should have specified a little bit on that. The chances of it actually peeling from the hole are really slim if it was all prepped well before hand. But who ever ends up spraying it can probably just spray over the holes before they make their actual pass and fill them, Or they do have a repair epoxy that we used to fill and repair some chips and gouges. Not a super fan of that because it doesn't always look the same and the sprayed surface. But I'm sure whoever you take it to would know how to best deal with it in a way they're comfortable with. Like me I'd probably try and soften the edges of the holes, tape the backsides, and just spat some material in over the top and sand and level it before the actual spray. Or maybe even not have to sand it depending on how it layed out. It's all really dependent on the sprayer and what they're comfortable with and what they know they can make look good.

Yea. We prep in the one bay so it get messy pretty quick. The booth on the other hand is messy all the time. The only real good way to clean it is to let the line x build up and peel it off the plastic we have layed out. The camera I was using was a gopro hero 7 black

It's line x ultra that we spray as a premium top coat. It basically resists fading from uv light and gives the bed liner a nice shiny look. If your into that kind of thing. The only downfall is if you use your bed it'll dull out over time, just like a regular paint would.

@@kensingh9527 yeah you could get it resprayed, but probably only once maybe twice. Or else you'll probably build up quite a bit of material. It is pretty durable though and I wouldn't really worry about average use completely wrecking it. It's actually really surprising when someone brings in a truck that we've sprayed and it had some real damage. Stuffs tuff.
