I used my Sharpe primer gun with a 2.3 , mixed it 4:1:1 . At 45-50 psi The finish was was a very light texture, which was what I was looking for. Thanks for the video.

I found this video by accident. You have no idea how much you helped me. I was also wondering about drilling that tip for various thicker materials and gun being so cheap. With the side work I do this is going to save me alot of money

FYI aside from a good cleaning U-Pol also makes a great adhesion promoter for plastic call U-Pol #4, that should be used on all plastic applications before putting the finish on.

Ed, a tip that I use when spraying Raptor to keep the edges from chipping is to wrap the Raptor liner around the edges when you spray it. For example where your hole chipped away, try spaying the back side of the hole making sure that the Raptor joins together in the hole. This eliminates an edge for it to chip away. Same with side pieces, hoods, etc.... always spray around the edges to the back sides to eliminate the edges that allow for chipping. Enjoyed the video and try this to see if it helps you out.

Good advice. It's something I learned early on in this process and should've iterated in the video. Glad you brought it up.

I clean with degreaser use 180 grit, then clean with alcohol or acetone not lacquer thinner, then spray with adhesion promoter.
@EdontheBeach
@EdontheBeach 2 жыл бұрын
just to note: acetone would melt this particular plastic, I tried it on another piece before I settled on lacquer thinner. it's worked pretty well, almost 4yrs later it looks like the day I put it back in!
@jr303official

@@EdontheBeach I was told lacquer thinner leaves a film, to use acetone, alcohol or a surface prep. The thing that real is key besides clean surface is adhesion promoter tho for plastic.

Ed you would be better off using Dawn on that second clean instead of Simple Green. Avoid degreasers with any kind of scent, it's just another chemical that attracts crap back to it. Also hook your garden hose to your hot water heater, along with a Home Depot bucket to keep your scrub brushes rinsed clean.

What were you thinking? wiping lacquer thinner off the table and spreading the contaminants back onto the plastic and melting them into the plastic with thinner? Dont use thinner at all. First use a wax/grease cleaner such as por15 marine clean, then sand , rounding edges, then wipe off, and clean with prepsol or cleansol in one direction. Then spray the plastic with adhesion promoter, then either spray direct with raptor, of if theres a colour difference with the rest of the car , spray with a 2K epoxy primer then with Raptor. If you spray around the edges and around masking tape edges with adhesive promoter first then you wont get peel back. prep is the key. Be carerful with prepsol do not get it on your skin, its hazardous gear and be really careful of the fumes of grip4
@EdontheBeach
@EdontheBeach 6 жыл бұрын
for your edification, this plastic does not melt with lacquer thinner...acetone will melt it though - yes, I tried both before I began. the process you outline will definitely work (prepsol and POR15 marine clean are both great and effective products), and for this project I didn't want those primer layers. I wanted to 'reflect' the original texture and was concerned that too many base layers would result in me having to then try to 'replicate' that texture. also, there was adhesion promoter applied, I didn't go over it because I assume anyone who would contemplate doing this procedure would, even if just out of habit, automatically do that just before they sprayed Raptor.

perfect description but I do use wash laquer thinner on a rag that has started to dry a little so it is not real wet as a last wipe down. 2k epoxy is a great first coating under any finish.

You can buy 2.0 and 2.2 mm tips for most name brand HVLP guns. I have DeVilbiss guns, and I special order 2.0 and 2.2 tips for my primer guns although the tips alone ($30 each for Starting Line model) are more than a Harbor Freight gun, so depends on your budget and availability. I think 2.2 mm might be just right for this. thanks for the video.

more than likely someone used that silicon shiney spray on the parts. you will never see that stuff in a paint shop. it is very hard to get off. I use laquer thinner not real wet to go over plastic first. then a dawn soap then wax and grease remover.
