As a coach who is totally blind, I appreciate how you use technical terms to breakdown the concepts. It helps me create a mental picture of how the plays should be ran, since I cannot see the screen. Friendly tip, it would be very helpful if you would say to what part of the field certain players are or go, rather than saying “here” or “this way.”

Inside Linebackers are also taught to "follow" the pulling Guard, meaning that area he just left will be wide open.

I like it coach, when the field is to the right and defenses apex the Y, I like to move the RB from right to left of the QB just before the snap. Keeps footwork and read same for QB.

Coach, I have recently gone back to watch a lot of your videos and I remember when I first watched this. I thought this whiteboard setup with your R and L receivers was so annoying. I had always hated when youtube videos were on poorly lit whiteboards. I also hated players that were set to a certain side. However, now I have adopted many of your schemes and your videos are some of my favorite on KZbin. Thank you for spreading your knowledge and keep up the work.

Given this alignment by the defense one would assume that the field is to the left and the boundary to the right. If this were the case then throwing to the uncovered would still be effective, but he wouldn't have much space to run with the boundary side LB, safety, corner all closing in on him with limited space to run.
@CoachMcKie

That is right. I stress to take what the defense is giving us. To me a three yard pass is the same as a three yard run. Sometimes you have to take it and live to play another down.

Hi coach. Can you explain the flip call to me please? The back switches start position but runs the ball through the same gap, is this right? Does everyone else stay the same? Why does this conteract the backer switching sides?

Hey Coach, That's a great idea. Towards the end of the year we went to the pistol. We didn't run this play towards the end of the year though. We moved to running more inside zone and GT pull. But it is going back in the playbook in the spring. I can go over how we will install it if that's something you want to see.

Hey Coach, Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch my video. It means a lot to me. I tell our quarterback to two turn on the key screen. Meaning, I want him to flip his hips and make a catchable ball to the receiver. This is something we drill every day in practice. If you go to my website, www.ronmckiefootball.com I have a free eBook talking bout the drills we use to get great at this play.

Thank you for your response. Another aspect of your play I have questions about is the center pulling. There is always a debate on our staff about that, what techniques do you use to coach this and how does it affect your play design if you have a center that does not snap and pull well?
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 7 жыл бұрын
Curtis Thompson Coach, we use a skip pull for our linemen. And a way to combat not wanting to pull your center is to always run the play to a 3 tech. That way your center is down blocking on the Shade and your backside guard is pulling.
@tsbonand
@tsbonand 7 жыл бұрын
@Curtis, that screen would be a pre-snap read. 2 O vs. 1 defender = throw the screen.
@PhillyEaglesFanatic
@PhillyEaglesFanatic 7 жыл бұрын
Coach, You mentioned that you like to call this to the 3 technique, but a lot of defenses like to set the 3 technique to the same side as the back in shotgun. Are there any tricks you use to get the defense to set the 3 technique away from the back?
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 7 жыл бұрын
Coach Fanatic, Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me that you would do. A way we have played with the defense is by having the running back 'bounce' to the position he needs to be in. So, if we are running One-Back Power to the left, then the running back would start on the left side and 'bounce' to the right when the quarterback tells him too. Does that make sense?
@PhillyEaglesFanatic
@PhillyEaglesFanatic 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that makes sense. I think Gus Malzahn has done that some with his offense at Auburn (If I'm not mistaken, even back when he was the OC). Another idea you might want to use when you are in the shotgun (QB at around 5 yards) is to have the back initially align behind the QB like in Pistol, then when the QB is ready to snap the ball, the QB gives the back a pre-determined signal and the back will move to side of the QB that you want him aligned on. Quick unrelated question: I know you appreciate the Air Raid offense and use some of their ideas; do yall vertical set on pass pro? Really appreciate your videos!
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 7 жыл бұрын
Coach Philly, We've gone from bouncing the back to the pistol. The pistol is the best thing we've done. It really screws with the defense because they do not know which way the back is going. We don't vertical set. I'd like to, but my quarterback gets nervous. That's why we went to the half slide.
@PhillyEaglesFanatic
@PhillyEaglesFanatic 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I could go on for days about the advantages of the pistol. Lol. If you want to run the spread option, but your QB is a not a bruiser type like Newton or Tebow, the pistol allows you to have your QB running to the perimeter rather than running to the inside, and you can still run spread option plays like Veer and Midline. You don't lose Inside Zone Read, as you can still run that, you just read the front side EMOL rather than the backside EMOL (Depending on how you block it, this could end up being basically Veer). You also gain the ability to do triple option with Veer and Midline (third option could be a pitch to a back, pitch to a receiver in motion, pitch to a receiver who gets into pitch relationship post-snap, bubble screens, outside receiver screens, etc), unlike Veer and Midline from shotgun. From a passing standpoint, I like that pistol doesn't allow the defense to set the coverage to the back against 2x2. It also keeps them from knowing which side will have a three man route combination IF the offense puts the back out into a route. From the defense's perspective, tendency report aside, you are just as likely to have a three man route combo to your left as you are your right. Not so with shotgun... To be fair: The downside in the running game I see with Pistol is you have less RPOs than you do with shotgun, and you lose Outside Zone Read (May not be the end of the world, but that's crucial if your offense is built around the Chip Kelly IZR/OZR tandem...) and Power Read. The downside in the passing game I see is that it is harder to get the back into pass protection, and it takes them longer to get out into a route, but I don't think people of yesteryear whined about that with I Formation and Ace/Singleback... Pistol and Shotgun each have their advantages and disadvantages, much like Zone Blitzes vs. Man Blitzes. Which one of them is best all depends on the personnel situation and offensive scheme. Sorry to hear that on the VSPP.

do u run this without the rpo, perhaps having the tackle climb second level and read the end.

Coach McKie 1st of all, we call that Iso not power, power for us is when we have a FB/TE kick Out the End. Play side linemen block down, and guard wrap to play side LB. I'm thinking Iso Rt/LT Read would tell him to climb. If running against a 1 tech base the playside DE. G block back on 1 tech, center Pulls for LB BS G&T combo 3 Tech to Backside LB

So why run a snag instead of a deep slant? Feels like that would produce a bigger play, especially against cover 2
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 7 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Miles Coach Miles, You could run a slant if you want. I just feel like the snag is an easier throw for the quarterback because the receiver is shipping and showing his numbers.

HIT THE SLOT against this defensive alignment...my god...talk about the uncovered principle...Run and shoot would eat this alive. (Any smart and well coached D-Coordinator will have a safety bump down to cover the uncovered slot to take away that pass....if they do not....HIT THE UNCOVERED SLOT!
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. We should be throwing uncovered the entire game. Most teams I've played against don't think you'll throw to the front side. Once you hit it a couple of times then most DCs make their safety walk down to try and take it away.

Watch old film of John Jenkins Run and Shoot. Ware and the Klingler's would throw the uncovered pass down the field to the receiver, much like basketball on grass...The receivers were always on the move down the field...rarely did you see the standing still quick screen at all (which I am not a fan off....UNLESS the secondary is 8-12 yards off...then hit all day).
@CoachMcKie
@CoachMcKie 8 жыл бұрын
I've seen all of the John Jenkins's film that's on KZbin. I loved the way Klingler would throw the ball on the run to an uncovered receiver. I know there is a certain technique that the 'Shoot coaches would teach to get the ball to the wide receiver quickly. It's one of the things I think being under center is better for the 'Shoot than in the gun.
