Great video that demonstrates a true craftsman skill level to install a bronze weatherstripping. Very helpful video.

Thank you! Question : how do you seal the bottom ? Interlocking bronze ?
@stevensilverman48632 жыл бұрын
Use an interlocking water return threshold that's the best.

Thank you for this vid. Checking the pricing of spring bronze weatherstripping was very expensive. Why did you choose to replace that old bronze type as opposed to using a more modern door stop type weatherstripping? I have old bronze weatherstripping and someone told me that’s the old way of weatherstripping a door. New way would be to use door stop weather stripping. Is it really homeowner’s choice or should you replace old bronze with new bronze? I’m confused as to which one to use. Can someone please help?

Thanks for watching. As you can see in the video, they had the big box, doorstop, weatherstripping, and it failed. It’s up to the installer to inform the customer their best choices of weatherstripping, spring spring bronze weatherstripping can last 100 years and it’s adjustable so with old houses that have old doors although there is probably settling at that point if there were additional settling, then the spring bronze can be adjusted .

My dog keeps destroying the vinyl weather stripping. Can I use this product instead of the vinyl or is this product used in addition to the vinyl?

Bad dog! You can use it in place of the vinyl weather stripping.

Great video! Where do you source the weatherstripping from? Is bronze more effective than other weatherstripping materials or is it just more period-appropriate? Looks really nice :)
@craftsmanshomesllc82192 жыл бұрын
Jean, Thanks for watching. I buy directly from Killian hardware online. The bronze will last over a 100 years and is adjustable to fit the gap by running a putty knife in the crease( I did not show how to do that so I will make a short video soon and show how. Bronze is a good solution for weatherstripping, period.

Can you use spring bronze on Arch top doors? If not, what do you recommend?
@craftsmanshomesllc82192 жыл бұрын
It would depend on the arc. If the arc is a tight radi then it may not be the best solution. For odd issues like that I use silicone weatherstripping tubes. They come in different diameters and the installation is simple. Go to www.conservationtechnology.com/building_weatherseals_components.html and they sell different types of weatherstripping for many different applications. Heads up, it takes a specific type of silicone caulking that is available everywhere, just use the type that matches

What adjustments did you actually make?
@craftsmanshomesllc8219 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking If you run a putty knife or the dull edge of a 5 in 1 tool along the crease , it makes the fold greater, so it will make the weatherstripping tighter and decrease the air flow.

What about the bottom of the door?
@craftsmanshomesllc82192 жыл бұрын
Spring bronze is not a product I would use for door bottom. Either a door sweep that attaches to the inside of the door or a mechanical retracting sweep routered in the bottom of the door.

@@craftsmanshomesllc8219 the door I’m reworking had a j hook zinc I believe weatherstripping that caught into the threshold. Was seeing if you had a video on installing that

Those types of weatherstrips are touchy. I have never replaced one. Every time I get to a door that has one, it’s damaged. I think they’re a good idea but the margins at the bottom of the door needs to be rather accurate in spacing.
@rw76683 жыл бұрын
should discuss the material and also the "small adjustment". otherwise why not just say: nail it in at 1 1/2"?

Got that bronze weatherstrip on my door. It's garbage. It hides the air gaps but has ZERO insulation properties. The cold from the metal will just drip right in your house and can also cause condensation.
@craftsmanshomesllc8219 Жыл бұрын
Interesting, what region of the country are you from?
@craftsmanshomesllc8219 Жыл бұрын
True, it has no insulating properties, but it does cut the air flow

At 6:05 you mentioned putting some of the spring bronze weatherstripping behind the strike plate and that it is needed. BUT you did not show how you bent it or how you installed it. It was just video magically there for you to talk about for about 10 seconds then moved on. Come on man. You have left out important information.
@craftsmanshomesllc82192 жыл бұрын
My Bad. Thanks for calling me out on that. I will do a follow up and include that detail. In short it’s a centerpiece and it goes behind the striker plate you can get it at killianshardware.com it’s sold separately but thanks again for calling me out on that

Where can I purchase this? I'm at Home Depot and these people are completely useless.

Try killianhardware.com

I hear you about Home Depot personal. Most of the time if you need help, you're on your own there. Finding this at a brick-and-mortar store, Ace Hardware is your best bet.
