In watching other videos and visiting plunking on the Columbia most of the people use a rock or brick to a 10 lb test line attached to the brick so when the fish hits you break off the leader and you have direct line to the fish with no weight

Yeah, we talked about using a rock/break off method. We may try that in the future.

Also, there's a sand bag you can use that dumps when you start pulling on it. That way, you do t leave debris and plastic line all.over the bottom

It's not too light for salmon, I agree! Still, if we got a big one along with the 15yrds of line plus 14oz of weight in the current... Then a stronger rod may offer more control and confidence!
