Dear, don't worry. Late is just that, late. I got a new roof and solar panels last year and they forgot to remove the scaffolding. After the umpteenth call, it is finally away. My greenhouse stood there, so I had to skip seedlings and food plants normally in the greenhouse. Thiesles? It took me a while to understand Thistles with a short-sounding I, like in dim. Deutzia and Heuchera are the Latin pronunciation and the EU doesn't exist in English. It is a one sound. Ain't Brunnera beautiful, the blue flowers

About the sunflowers: usually when seedling become leggy, it's because there is not enough sunlight. Even on the South facing windowsill this can happen. That's why I use specific grow lights. Also "moving" their stem by using a fan or just simply stroking them with your hands every day might thicken the stem a bit. Hope this might help a bit :) I press my thumbs for you! ( That's how we say in Germany " Good luck!") Greetings from Berlin!

Catherine on the sunflowers, try putting fans on them to simulate the wind. If you only have one fan, turn the plants from time to time. It should help the stems grow stronger overall. 🌻

Hi Catherine, I grow about 70 sunflowers each year. I was in my greenhouse yesterday and I too have a few that have gone all bendy. I’ve moved them into the sunny part of the greenhouse (this time of year there’s some shade in there) and once the sunflowers are in full sun, they normally shoot up given some time. I’m in England and like you, there’s been much rain this year so far so I’ve been growing seeds in the house as I have space and glass which helps wonderfully. My sunflowers in the house have chunky stems on them now so I’ll be planting them out soon along side my cottage wall. I noticed a few sunflowers in the greenhouse had been eaten this year so I’ve moved them about and it has seemed to have worked! Just need some more sunshine to get things moving! If you have a private email address I can send you some pictures / swap info. I live in village and we swap seeds and such like - it’s much fun. Cheers & thanks!

I planted 2 packs of tomato seeds, only 1 seed has germinated - that was in my kitchen! The only things that seem to be doing ok in this weather are my potatoes, everything else is so far behind. We need some sun 🌞

Hoping some sunshine goes your way too!! 🌸

Definitely recommend the wet paper towel method, I always get fab germination rates using that and keeping them in a sunny spot indoors

Hello from the Brooklyn lady in a community garden! (My own flat has a north window only, so I have to go that route.) We just had some early May cleanup as well - we have a grape vine that was growing a bit wild because it was behind the raised beds for people's plots and there was no way to get to it. So one member gave himself a task - he found a little space between some of the raised beds, and then built a little path leading up to the grape vine FINALLY. He also cut some of the vines that were starting to get tangled around a fence and mixed up in the electric wires in the building next door; that cleared out a nice patch of ground for me to then go in and set up a container garden area for herbs. We had two really big pots that were each big enough for me to plant about four or five different herb plants in; I set up one pot with the more woody herbs like thyme and oregano, and the other is for more tender herbs like chives, parsley and dill. (I'm also on the hunt for tarragon and rosemary.) There's also a pot of peppermint and a combined pot with lemon verbena, lemon balm and chamomile. I also found a bracket that hangs onto a railing and supports a plant pot; it is now hooked on the fence over the herb spot and I'll put some trailing nasturtiums in it. It gave me something to do while the veg in my own garden plot are still growing. Spring in New York has also been pretty unpredictable and the lettuce and peas I planted in March are only just starting to take off now. I was hoping to have the room to start beans, cucumber and melons, so I'm hoping those lettuces hurry up and grow soon!

Oh wow 🤩 your community garden sounds so incredible!! The path sounds like a great idea and sounds like it all came together! You’ve certainly made the most of it ❤️ now if the weather could just play ball that would be ideal wouldn’t it!

Hi Catherine, just a bit of advice to make more space in your borders. If you tie the daffodil foliage like making a knot with the foliage itself, then you'll be able to mulch easier and can still wait for the foliage to die back, as intended. Hope this handy hint makes a difference😊, from Jo in New Zealand. Love your petite garden.....your mulch is to be admired.

Oh Catherine, I have been hoping to see a garden video! Everything looks good. The season is beginning!!. I planted (from seed, because you and Karen have inspired me) squash, tomatoes, carrotts, onions and peas. Also, seed potatoes. For flowers (from seed), Cosmos, sweet peas, nastursium and sunflowers. I bought the little green house like Karen's. In January 2022, I put in a nectarine tree and this year I probably have no less than 100 nectarines! I also put in an apricot and 2 plumb trees. I have prolific strawberries from last year and this year I planted 2 black berry and 1 rasberry bush. I don't want to forget the bulbs. I planted lots of gladiolas and freshia, some Dahlia (but they don't do well for me zone 9B). My neighbor gave me a very small Holly Hock last year and it has reseeded everywhere. I will soon be in Holly Hock heaven! I too paid for a professional concrete decorative border in my back yard (so worth the money.... I love it). I have tons of border planting space. I'm mixing veggies with everything else in the borders. It is so much fun to see things grow. I cannot tell you how much you have inspired me over the last 4 or 5 years. My heart is full. Excited to get my 2nd signed Dainty book!

Fun vlog. Now you have the lid off the sunflowers.. use sticks to keep them growing up straight until they are thicker and stronger (more economical than using fans). . I use 1x use wood BBQ skewers. They work great to hold seedling plants up and get them to grow straight. I use them for tomato plants etc to. Skewers are my "go to" for plant support.
