I do similar things when I move. I always have 2 boxes and a trash bag. 1 box for things in donating, one for packing and then the trash bag for what I'm tossing. I do it again when I unpack on the other end again, because sometimes I find I've changed my mind about things I packed to keep. It certainly helps to keep down on dragging clutter when you move.
