Wow i'm shocked, we have re-homed a 14 month entire Springer, my partner prefers your lead and i did prefer a police training dog lead with a harness!!!! He pulls so much and makes it very difficult to walk for me and my partner to be fair, he was pulling exactly the same as Baxter on both leads, what i hated with the slip lead that you and my partner use was the heavy breathing it was awful to hear. I watched this video and what i noticed straight away was that you put the slip lead higher than the collar?? i didn't know if that was a mistake at first!! so i watched more of your videos and it clearly wasn't a mistake!!! you put the slip lead just below their ears!!!, i got my partner to watch as well and straight away, we went and tested it. FANTASTIC ........ 100% improvement straight away. i don't know if other dog owners have made the same mistake that we have? You will be making our walks so pleasurable now. All i need to do now is get him to give me eye contact as he is brilliant in the house but as soon as we go out he is in the zone, i don't think he was ever really walked or socialized that much, i shall look at your other videos to see if there is anything there to help. Thank you so much you are amazing!!!

I love that you let them smell, I live in Canada and have been looking for a trainer for teaching my 75 pound lab to walk and they won't train so she has any freedom, they all say they can only train so she walks next to me, but I will try this method and hopefully not need a trainer.

These can create a lot of torque on the dogs head, leading to a lot of pain in their neck which can also cause damage. Their skin is a lot thinner than ours which means tissue damage can happen very easily. Just because a recue recommends this, doesn't mean it is good. The only way to teach a dog to walk on a loose lead is by lots of repetition using either a Y shaped harness or flat collar during training sessions, short lengths frequently until the new behaviour (walk on a nice loose lead) becomes engrained. There should be no quick fixes in dog training and equipment should never replace time and teaching a dog. These are aversive to the dog, that's why they work. An amazing, qualified Dog Trainer explained to me that the practice and repetition of teaching your dog loose lead with short lengths at first is to help them travel new neural pathways. The more those neural pathways are travelled, the wider they become so that the new behaviour (walking on a lovely loose lead) becomes engrained and the dog doesn't even have to think about it. It is how all mammals learn. However dogs can be very complex in how they learn and association and any pain or discomfort from a head collar (which is why they walk nicely on these things) can lead to negative associations with everything around them, even things that are not related, even the handler. Anyone who understands Canine Science would not recommend these. Invest in a qualified, force free Dog Trainer who can evidence their accredited qualifications, you won't regret it and your dog will thank you for it. It is well worth it.

Nonsense. Head collars do no more damage than any other piece of equipment when wrongly used. Did it ever occur to you that if head collars were so dangerous they would not be on the market? Too many lawsuits. Instead there are now a zillion styles.

Quick question about the breaks- what’s best to do when your dog gets too excited when they’re allowed a break? Mine can walk nicely on the slip lead then gets a break and just wants to dart about to different sniffs and pull against the lead?

If you're going to buy a gundog and not train it to work, don't be surprised when it wants to follow it's natural instinct of hunting up and flushing. He's pulling because he's wanting to do what he's been bread for and his entire genetic make up is telling him to do, and without any formal training he hasn't a clue how to do that in an appropriate manner. Even if you don't shoot, it's massively beneficial to train a gundog as a gundog.

I've got a 8 year old sprollie , with a similar problem that i have never managed to correct , or if i do , it 's not for long. big problem for me is she feels she has to check all smells of animals and where they live , which i guess is a protective instinct , but i have noticed that she is much better behaved when someone else comes to pick her up for a walk and then she will continually look back to see if I I'm following and is submissive.

Wish I could have found a way to stop my Spaniel, Ollie, from pulling on the lead. We tried every kind of lead and harness and he'd obey every command while walking. It was just that, once he was actually moving, I think he wanted to make sure we got wherever we were going as quickly as possible. Ironically, the best way to get him to walk calmly was... to let him off the lead. He'd pull like crazy when we were walking on the pavement but then, as soon as we got away from the road, I'd let him off the lead and he'd happily walk along beside me. Dogs, eh? 😃

Right so how do u do this with a dog who will yank backwards to get out the leash/collar and doesn't care about pressure will actually look like he is about to pass out.. Weighs about 40kg. Treats, affection and praise words don't work so.. He's 3 yrs old. Jumps up and down and will drag u. Very stubborn. Walked on a head harness now and he's still the same.

There's another method I can think of right now. (Search for "WDR Hunde verstehen", just copy it, on KZbin, it's german but you can see what he does) He takes control of his space and doesn't allow the dog to go past your side. A option you guys could maybe try if you want ^^

NOT a great trainer as no trainer would at 4.20 walk straight onto a road whether it be a dead end cul-de-sac or a busy road with a dropped or raised curb. Rarely have i walked a dog i've owned on a lead in 50yrs but i always make them sit and wait at a curbside. If you're going to train or teach a dog then do it properly for the dogs sake.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Depends on behaviour issues, breed, experiences etc many dogs take a bit of time. The process is simple but getting the reward times perfect, cues, markers all is a skill. Also takes a well trained trainer or eye to diagnosis the behaviour reasons and make a modification plan.
