I really like how you showed the proper way to put a slip lead on. A different dog trainer said to put in centered on the back of the head, but it never worked for me. Positioning it behind the ear is so much better! Thank you!

Great video, going to put this all in place with our 7m old Doberman. We are working well but find when we go out in public it all falls apart and he just gets over excited and low attention span

Brilliant explanation I will have to wait 2 more months until I start with the slip lead for my Vizsla, it can't come soon enough. In the mean time we are having good fun off lead.

This was an excellent video. My GSD pulls & barks a lot whenever she sees other dogs & people when out. It’s a real pain. I’ve tried so many different leads & collars. I tried a slip but was told on my 1st attempt using it that it was an “advanced training tool” & that I shouldn’t use it. I feel much more confident trying it again after watching & learning these steps. Do you have any advice about passing by people when out walking if the dog’s barking? Thank you x

What an absolute masterclass, Thanks for posting the video I've tried a slip lead a few times and tbh its me that failed now I know how to implement it properly, Thankyou, Quick question ff I may... My 3yo Border collie isn't food motivated at all and 95% of the time will turn her nose up at any treat and will only eat at meal times how would you reward a dog like her instead of high value rewards?
@ianmillard59Ай бұрын
If you fast the dog for 24hrs then use they're normal food that will boast there food drive
@du7ch384Ай бұрын
@@ianmillard59 @southenddogtraining1 Thanks for the reply Ian I really appreciate the advice but our Collie doesn't respond to food at all. Fasting doesn't motivate her food drive at all no matter what is offered, I tried this repeatedly when she was a pup on and off for months as this was the advice from a local trainer but it never worked she would happily go hungry and only have an interest in food at her meal time, ie after her evening walk. I've never had a dog like this before and would like her to engage with me a lot more and be easier to train but I'm at a loss on how to get her to click and listen to me although she is a good dog and never runs off has a great temperament and is very social with other dogs and humans she even lays down at kerbs and waits for her command before crossing and does her green cross code but I would like her to have a better recall instead of sitting and waiting for me to approach her. She is quite spoilt as we live in a remote rural location and only one of her 3or 4 main walks a day is on lead. please any advice on how to approach a dog like this for training would be helpful.

How do you teach a dog to not bark at people while off the lead and at a distance? Recall is great, which I praise her for, but don’t know how to discipline at a distance Thank you

There are sooo many videos with trainers like this that don’t take in account dogs like my working cocker who won’t train with kibble. Also they always have a dog that is a handy height so they don’t have to keep bending down to feed. My WCS is a year old and is ok sometimes but still needs a lot of work, these trainers are infuriating

Now, can you get the owner to do it? We know most dog trainers can train dogs pretty easily; it's getting the owner to do it consistently and you have to get buy in from them. Otherwise, they'll revert back to their old ways or the dog doesn't get walked. How do you make it so the owner actually wants to practice? In the house, in the backyard, in the driveway - they have to earn their way on the walk. Proactive stops - do they stop when you do? No, then they're not ready for another step fwd yet. Had an instructor who spent an entire week in her driveway going back and forth with a cigar of string cheese hanging out of her mouth. The neighbors were even laughing at her. Guess what, they're not laughing anymore because she can take that Rottweiler anywhere and he never wants to leave her side. A whole week is nothing in the grand scheme of things - put in the work up front and it pays dividends later. Hope that helps.

Yes the owner was able to fine before they went home. This was a free session so we could film it, hence why we wasn't interacting with the owner during the recording.
