Cracking The Cryptic

Күн бұрын

Here's where you can play La PrimeAvera by Kothornos: app.crackingthecryptic.com/kg...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Along the indicated diagonal, digits do not repeat. Black dots indicate that cells are in a 2:1 ratio. Numbers outside the grid indicate the sum of the cells in the direction of the arrow. In cages, the number in the top left denotes the sum of the cells in that cage. Digits cannot repeat in cages. A given cage can only contain prime numbers, or it can only contain non-prime numbers. For instance, a single cage can contain 2,3,7, since they are all prime, but it cannot contain 1,2,3,7 since 1 is not prime but 2,3,7 are prime.

29:21 for me. Easier way to determine the disposition of the last two 14 cages: If the cage in box 6 contained 1, 4, and 9, then there would only be two cells available for those three digits in row 6.

1,4,9 I think you mean - but yes, that was the step for me, at 17:10 in the video, as soon as I got the primes on the diagonal in box 5.

Found it tough but enjoyable. Winced a little watching Mark struggle with the yellow/purple choices in boxes 2 and 6. Box 4 determined that very quickly. Like others, I found that the 40 diagonal wasn’t needed.

I finished in 86 minutes. Coloring really helped with this puzzle. I was able to do the beginning really quick, but the middle I struggled on and even made a mistake by falsely claiming that a 48 pair must be in box 5's kropki. After that mistake, I was able to finish by proving that box 6 cage must always be purple. I, then, got stuck not knowing what to do before remembering that little killers existed. Great Puzzle!

once coloured it took ages nibbling away with sudoku and more colouring at the little killer options until it unravelled. Fun but tricky

Solved it in 34:04. I would have done it sooner, but I made a terrible mistake and had to undo most of my work (forgot a prime number could go on a black dot). Also, like some others, I didn't need to use the 40 diagonal. I loved, though, the logic to figure out the type of digits for r2c8 and for the 14 cage in Box 2. For the 14 cage in box 2, I first figured out the type of numbers in the Box 6 14 cage by realizing if it was 1+4+9, there would be a triple x-wing of 1, 4, and 9 between boxes 4 and 6, placing 1, 4, and 9 in the bottom row of Box 5, which r6c4 could be none of. Thus that cage was 2+5+7 and after a few 3's are placed, all the primes in rows 5 and 6 are accounted for. Then, if the Box 2 14 cage was 2+5+7, there wouldn't be enough spaces in c4 to place 2, 5, and 7 (the only two spots are r6c4 and r9c4, the others are all non-prime or in the same box as the cage).

I love these puzzles that have interesting math features. This seems as if I could possibly solve it, but I don't know, a 40 minute video from you usually signals something beyond my ability. Maybe I'll just watch ... yes, that is a good idea. I'll just watch and enjoy. Thanks, Mark, as always.

Emily, Why don't you have a go at solving it, then when you get stuck, watch a bit of the video until you get some more hints about how to continue. Then do a bit more on your own, watch a bit more of the video etc. That's what I started doing and I've made good progress that I can use for each new puzzle. Go on! You'll be really pleased with yourself when you eventually solve a puzzle that you had previously thought would be beyond your ability. I know that I was (and still am!).

The correct way to determine the 14 cages is that 149 can't go in the 14 cage in box 6 because then 149 would need to go on the bottom row of box 5 and one of those cells is already purple.

I tried doing this on my own at first. Using a killer calculator I was able to pencil mark all but two of the cages, and even those two were each narrowed down to two possibilities. This let me put two digits in box 7, and I was able to deduce two 14 cages couldn't both be 1-4-9 (and place a 1 in the 11 cage) through trial and error, but that's where I got stuck and had to resort to following along with the video. Ultimately finished in 47:37. A fun puzzle until I got stuck.

OP is right for natural numbers 2 and up. @@David_K_Boothis right for natural numbers 1 and up. Good enough to cover the digits in the sudoku. But (*math intensifies*) there's another addendum coming for 0, and then another for 1/2, and then another for pi, and another for i... Basically, "non-prime" is not some term you should work out of your vocabulary. It's the domain minus the set of primes in the domain, that is to say Primes + Non-Primes = Everything Relevant, and that's a powerful relationship.
