Dialogue, understandable diction, a decent script, characters. Gosh, I'd forgotten how that made for a great story telling experience. No mumbling, no swearing, no ghastly cacophony

When Payne first sees Carmen in her Tutti Frutti outfit, he exclaims 'Good Neighbors'. This is a joke about Roosevelt's Good Neighbor policy of cultivating friendship with Latin America. Hollywood helped out by producing exotic musicals set south of the Rio Grande; Carmen was their biggest discovery. Singing a Latina version of 'Chattanooga Choo-Choo' was a way of conveying the message that Uncle Sam, not Adolf, was her buddy.
@brianlawton8172 Жыл бұрын

What keeps these so-called routine, formulaic pix such good fun is that the stars were genuinely interesting personalities as well as gifted, industrious performers. Betty, Carmen, Romero and the hilariously sharp-tongued Charlotte Greenwood make a nutritious mix. You need a bland leading man such as John Payne for them to bounce off, or the mix would be indigestibly rich. And the pace- the whip-smart dialogue, the casual assurance of the songs and dances! The reason why shots ran longer then was that the audience did not need pasted-on visual fireworks from supersonic cutting and special effects. The performers dished up enough of it.
