Just a quick walk around my exotic/tropical garden here in Abingdon. It’s been a tough year for the garden due to the “Beast from the East” and the hot summer. August 27th 2018
(Apologies for the jittery video. I have no idea why it did that.)

This is very impressive. I love how you’ve managed to fill all the various levels with plants but in a way that no one plant overwhelms the others. They all get to fill their space and present themselves at their best. I like the fact that you can see very little bare soil and I love how a lot of the plants set each other off by contrasting in form, colour or texture! Altogether a big whopping 10 out of 10 for how to create an exotic garden. You’ve pretty much got it down to perfection as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure another video with commentary showing the names of the plants would go down very well I think!

Improve Sheffield Thank you so much for your comments, they are really appreciated! This video was taken after my open day that year so had been primped and pruned thoroughly. Plants never grow how you expect them to. Each year the Dahlias can grow to a different height even though they are left in the ground over winter so it makes planning for planting schemes difficult. Dahlia ‘David Howard’ says that it will grow to about a metre tall but here it can grow to two metres!👍 Before the open day each plant will fight for its space and then I just prune it to fit in around the plants that surround it.

The thumbs up or down is just for the people to have an option to express themselves but youtube doesnt really care about that. At least thats what all my IT specialists say.. That's one of the most impressive tropical gardens I've ever seen. Maybe because it had an English country garden style. No, I'm not mad, the garden showed clusters of same type plants, with winding paths sided by tropical plants smartly well placed. Thank you Carole for your kind comments! Lots of different things going on in the garden that when put all together, make the garden what it is. Right plant, right place - layering of plants - lots of things really. Adam Frost did a descriptive walk through of the garden on Gardeners World in September 2017, describing the planting as resembling and English woodland but with tropical style plants.

You should put some short videos on once a week or every couple weeks of what's going on in different corners of your garden or what you're doing. I know it takes time and thought to think about it but it would be nice to hear your voice explain why you did the design you did in specific little places. Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. Normally no one answers my comments, but you did. Thanks mate. Can you tell me the name of the shrub, just passed and next to your straw roofed hut. It has long leaves of about 4 to 5 inches long with jagged edges. At first I thought the leaves were part of a trex leaf. But they were all individual leaves. There are loads of plants in you garden that I have not seen before, but that one screamed out “buy me”. I’m really looking forward to the next video you make just to know the names of some of your plants. Thank you Steve.

No problem eddy. I always try to reply when I can. I could chat about my garden for hours. I normally only get to do that on my open day once a year! The plant that I think you mean is Schefflera delavayi. Those leaves are more like 6-8 inches or more in length. It’s one of my favourite plants in the garden. It also shouted ‘buy me” when I saw it........ three times in fact!!😁

south star The thing with my garden is the fact that you can’t just pop to the garden centre or DIY store and buy all the plants that I grow here. It can take years of patience to track these plants down, that’s even if you know that they exist in the first place!😄 That’s why it will always evolve over time. The planting will ‘wax and wane’ with plants being removed and replaced and then maybe returning again in later years. I too have had a longing to go into landscape gardening and I have at last taken the plunge. After 16 years doing Fencing for a living, I will be leaving all that behind and starting with a landscaping company next month!! 😊👍

hc Thank you so much! ☺️ You are lucky in the fact that your garden could look like this all year round. The garden here has plants that die back to ground level during winter and then regrows again the following spring (well hopefully, if the winter is mild😇) We had a mild winter here so plants are just starting to push back through the soil now!🌱 The palms stay evergreen though 🌴🌴🌴

They make the garden more tropical and at the same time enhancing the larger architectural plants. There is one more plant I need to know of if I’m going to aquire one for my ‘patch’ and that’s the one at the bottom of the frame 0:25. It looks like a mini trex. Raymond Mooney Thank you Raymond, I am very proud of what I have created here and look at it in disbelief some days as to just how it’s turned out from just being a grassy patch.

Raymond Mooney Good for you! 👍 It’s a slippery slope though. Once the exotic plant bug bites you are in trouble!😆

Really beautiful Steve. Super well done. I'm trying to do the same on Canada's west coast. My biggest drawback is not our climate but my bigger than 1/2 acre lot. Hilarious hey? I've always felt trying to control a smallish space is the key to success. With that said I bet I could meander around your garden for hours on end.

you should look at getting Arenga engleri native to southern Japanese Islands. They look like genuine tropical rainforest feather palms with wide, lush leaves and can tolerate until -10 degrees C. I have them in my Bordeux garden for 7 years and they thrive.

Very beautiful! I wish mine was that full! Here in east Texas, too much foliage can mean too many mosquitoes. Love the look and all the water features! You did an excellent job!

Fantastic stuff your garden has been a huge inspiration for me since i first saw it on HTUK so glad you did a video this year was great on gardeners world last year but too short! would love to see more through the seasons mate like overwintering and that. superb.

Thank you! It’s a shame that 4 years of my blog on HTUK has been lost. I will certainly try and do videos each season as a lot of people think that there is no interest in the winter months. Yes there is less foliage but it’s a great time to see the architectural palms!

As a fellow tropical plant enthusiast im very impressed and if im honest rather envious. My garden is tiny by comparison to yours just 35ft x 18ft with another small area near my gate. On saying that im in the process of making my front garden a tropical treat. Im a bit of a palm nut, collecting upwards of 50 assorted palms . A fair few of them are trachycarpus spices. Your garden is so inspirational. A true benchmark for others including myself to emulate.

Stumbled across this. It’s amazing. Love your choice of flowers, as they all look tropical and exotic but are in fact well known garden plants given a whole new lease of life.

Thank you Steve! Yes a lot of the flowers are various Dahlias. These have been planted in the garden for 10 years as they were used to fill the garden easily and cheaply. Visitors to the garden love them so I keep them in. I love them too of course as they show where the garden originally started.

Splendid paradise. This takes a LOT a LOT of dedication, time hrs. Even a coy pond & so many varieties of healthy plants. The water feature alone needs maintenance & care. Wondering how many yrs it took to created this gorgeous garden. I lived in so FL & now in Central FL. Had a 1/3 of a similar garden & yours is outstanding. Congratulations

Looking at your video is always a pleasure. I too have a tropical garden but it is no where as good as yours. You have so many plants and shrubs that I have never seen before. Have you’ve concidered doing another video but with the plants seen included. If you did, my garden could eventually improve, in time. Thanks mate.

Thank you for your kind comments Eddy. I have done a ‘talk through’ the garden a couple of times but on both occasions I had a phone call for PPI halfway through😡 It is something that I will attempt to do again this summer. 👍
