I watched this and your Tribal Let's Play series before buying the game. Hands down, they were the most helpful and gave me the best advice of all the resources I found geared towards new players. So thanks James! A few tips: If like me you want to start off playing as a Lost Tribe, I recommend a biome that does have winter. 30/60 is pretty comfortable. This is because you will need time to research electricity to build coolers and prevent food from spoiling. Winter acts as a natural freezer, and gives you a bit of breathing space where your pawns can focus on production and research instead of constantly hunting. Similarly, Tribal games are MUCH easier in a biome with a lot of wood. Campfires to keep away the cold and passive coolers to keep away excessive heat consume enormous amounts of wood. My favorite is boreal forest, but swamps and temperate forests can work well also. For any new players: - I always try to make my colony on or next to a road, with at least one friendly outlander town and one gentle tribe within a day or two of travel in good weather. It is hugely helpful to speed up caravan movement, and have places to trade extra items for silver, or buy things you've run out of in an emergency. - DON'T build walls from wood or steel. They are both flammable. You will have many other far more important uses for steel later. Build walls only from stone. If you play as a Lost Tribe you can deconstruct ruins to make patchwork walls. If you play as New Arrivals you can start stonecutting right away! - It genuinely is worth your time to have a "janitor" pawn whose #1 job is cleaning. Once you've got some good living and working structures built and perhaps 6 or more pawns, a full time cleaner will help the rest of your colony stay healthy, happy, and efficient. - Careful stockpile management and creating sensible work bills at production stations are hard skills to pick up at first but will pay off in the long run. You will save your colonists a lot of time and effort, and spare yourself a lot of frustration, by making sure the things they need most are close to hand. That way your most skilled workers don't spend their time walking back and forth from stockpiles, or creating items you're not going to use.

I always recommend temperate forest for starters next to a road, the biggest tip I have is think in advance. I always recommend starting with a 20-60 day growing period that way you can learn to stockpile resources for the future. I wish I would’ve known about mods and infestations, infestations are the most difficult events in my opinion. So don’t build buildings underneath mountains(they only spawn in rooms that are under mountain roofs). Geothermal power is the best source of power. Relationships with factions nearby can be very profitable and make travel easier. Train 2-3 pawns specifically for doing map events in mid/late game is a huge tip and part of the game I missed out on the first 120 hours I played. Good luck guys Also btw great video keep it up!

To piggy-back on this comment: choose your landing zone carefully! Open up the Terrain tab and pay attention to the types of stone you will find on the map; it is largely a matter of preference, but different stones have different properties. Marble is more beautiful and makes your colonists happier, Granite is durable but difficult to work, Sandstone provides no real benefit but is easy to work, and Slate is like a lesser Granite while Limestone is like a lesser Marble. Also, landing on a river is not a bad option either, as the water provides a natural defense; shallow water doesn't completely hinder enemies, but it does slow them down enough to pick them off at a range, while deep water does block enemies. A river will also open up the option of a watermill generator, which is better than a windmill, if a little more expensive, but not as good as a geothermal generator (but you can have as many watermills as you want). The position of your colony on the world map does not impact how often you are visited by traders or raiders, so don't settle on a secluded island, thinking it will keep you safe from the factions who do not have major settlements there. You, however, cannot cross the ocean without some later game technology. While the flu is universal, the biome you are in can impact what kind of sicknesses your characters may contract. Tropical jungles may have a year-round growing season, but they also carry a greater risk of many different diseases including malaria and tropical sleeping sickness. That is pretty much all I can think of for basic colony placement tips...
@2lazyt3785 жыл бұрын
@@anzelmgrzyb3982 infestations are event when a hive(s) will spawn along with various giant insects. The hive will spawn more insects and the insect will mine out blocks and attack colonists. They only occur under overhead mountains. They can also be pre-generated if the map comes with caves.

Your first few games should be done in a temperate forest with year round growing and small hills biome. This will give you wood and rocks with a lowered chance of digging far enough into a mountain for an infestation to deal with. Don't dig more than (8?) blocks into a mountain, or you risk an infestation event which is a spawn of lots of giant insects which can be very dangerous to a new colony. I can't remember how far you can dig safely, but basically if it's an exposed ore, it's safe to completely dig it out. Use the temperate forest not a swamp or jungle because there's a much higher infection chance in swamps and jungle biomes. If you can, try to find a lone small hill tile surrounded by flat temperate forest or other flat biome types when selecting your starting location. Small hills, and large hills drastically reduce your caravan movement speeds, so don't worry about this until you're skilled enough to want to try caravaning. Manual priorities should not be set to 1. The first 3 on the list should be set to 2 (exception would be non doctors don't get a 2 in medical) and all other priorities should also be set to at least a 2 if not a larger number. Save the use of a 1 for emergency situations where you need something done right now. A blight is a good example of this, so is possibly bed rest if you're fighting an infection and you want your pawn to stay the hell in bed. It doesn't have to be an emergency, maybe you want someone to get out of bed who's injured but otherwise healthy. Set his job to a 1 for as long as you want him doing it, but this will mean if he's bleeding out, he will not go get treatment and will happily carve stone blocks, or cook or whatever while bleeding to death. 2 hydroponic basins growing rice is more than enough for one colonist. You can get away with 3 basins for 2 colonists if you grow rice, or only 1 basin per colonist if you grow rice and use a nutrient paste dispenser. Nutrition is not applicable. A simple, fine, exotic or nutrient paste meal will fully fill their hunger bar and it doesn't matter at all what ingredients are used for how much food they get, but not all meals cost the same amount of resources. A nutrient paste meal only takes 6 ingredients. a simple or fine meal takes 10 ingredients (fine takes 5 vegetable and 5 meat) Exotic takes 15 ingredients, but does not give any more food than the nutrient paste taking only 6. Different crops do have different grow times and harvest amounts. Corn will give the most food per crop, but can't grow in a hydroponic basin. Rice is the best crop for Hydroponics for food per plant per year, but it's also the most labor intensive since it grows so dam fast. Never grow rice outside of a hydroponic basin, or fertile soil. Your first freezer should be as small as possible. Say 4 tiles per colonist + 2 tiles for medicine. This will be much cheaper and easier to keep it cold. If you're going to use the wonderfully over powered nutrient paste dispenser, put it in the freezer and give the freezer just enough room to fit it and the hoppers around it. The pawns can walk over the hoppers so they don't need a walkway and the 2 corners where you can't put hoppers will do nicely for herbal medicine storage. This is about the largest you can get away with only 1 air conditioner on. When your freezer gets large enough you need 2 air conditioners set one to -4 and the other to -2 (celcius) or 24 and 28 (fahrenheit). This will save some electricity as one will shut off when not needed. The kill box shown in this video is a perfect example of the worst possible thing you can do with your kill box. It's not the shape, it's the floor. You want things in your kill box to move as slow as possible giving your guns and or colonists more time to shoot melee people before they get there. I've got no clue what possessed the content creator to use tiles which give a speed boost. You want to use mud or water in the kill box as that will drastically slow hostile pawns down increasing the effectiveness of your kill box. I've also never seen 40+ traps being a deterrent for pawns to go through the hallway, but turrets are a massive deterrent for them to path find. For this reason, I tend to not use turrets in my kill box and instead use a ton of traps and colonists with good cover to deal with anything that might get through my traps. I like to have 2.5 traps (round up) per enemy that spawned in the last raid. This will almost guarantee that my colonists won't have to shoot except at fleeing enemies. Turrets are great to use outside your kill box but in your base area to make sappers come in the kill box and die to traps rather than come blow up a wall and now be in the range of a turret.

7:27 strawberries & rice is the better way to start cuz then you can break into simple meals and lavish meals because you have both after hunting, just doing strawberries is a fast way to die young. I always reccommend people to look for a Mountainous Temperate Forest with year Round growing without Caves and with Granite and Marble. It'll take several world regenerations, and even then you're unlikely to fulfill ALL of those criteria, but that is *the* best start i can think of. Normally, Year Round growing periods are in Tropical rainforests, but those have a higher rate of predators and diseases. There's a small chance to find a year-round temperate forest, but that way you don't have to worry too hard about warm clothes, nor paying attention to food growing. Mountainous without caves closes off one side of the map with rock, so you can dig into that and concentrate all your defenses at the front. Caves will likely ruin this by inserting a weakness in the rear or side of your mountain fortress. Granite is the most durable stone, for making defenses and outer walls from, Marble is the prettiest stone thus making Art better, and furniture and rooms made from marble give better room stats than slate, sandstone or granite.

Mods personally i recommand level up+, Glitter tech, terraform, Rimmiscal (dont know if i spelt that right), Infused, Polarus, and Giddy up oh and prepare carefully but use prepare carefully if your kind of familiar with the game already and what traits do, as it can make your game to easy but it does allow you to customize your colonist, and add stuff to and for the decent (or what ever sceniro you choose).

If you want to have a game where you won't get raided, but still want to have the rest of the difficulty intact, you can install the no mechanoid raids mod and the more faction control mod. More faction control lets you set the number of different kinds of factions. Just disable pirates, rough outlander unions and savage tribes. Beware though, without installing the no mechanoid raids mod, this set up would mean dealing with mechanoid raids much much earlier than you normally would be dealing with them, so unless that's what you want, keep that in mind.

My 4 main tips would be. Don't overlook an imperfect person to add to your colony a person with a bad trait yes but if their skills are not that high they can still be a cleaner hauler and help defend the colony. Don't ignore cleaning it may not always seem important but if you have a dirty colony then your colonists will be on a hair trigger ready to mental break if something goes wrong in addition if you have a dirty kitchen you increase your chance of food poisoning. Don't wait to long to setup defences it'll be fine for a while but then it won't be and you will die. Use manual priorities not all colonists are great cooks some are better at other skills but you still want to bee able to cook in addition set most skills to atleast a 4 if you don't you can't force them to do a job and will just stand around when their main job is finished. Also bonus tip don't build a large building out of wood
@lsswappedcessna5 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend starting in a temperate forest with either 50/60 day growing or year round growing. Also use the heck out of hydroponics, because things grow faster in them. Especially things like rice, which is really sensitive to soil quality. Also, avoid building with wood as much as possible. Get a mod like VGP garden Resources or one that adds quarries because resources will be scarce late game and caravaneering can be extremely tedious. When manually setting work priorities, Firefighting, Cleaning and Researching MUST be 1or they will never be done, at least in my experience. With crops, have at least one small zone with rice, to give some constant food supply. I let vegetarian and meat on all meals, with a slight restriction on simple and fine meals. Since I run all cannibal colonies, I designate lavish meals to use human meat and insect jelly, whereas simple and fine meals use generic non-human meat and no insect jelly. Use insect meat either for kibble or chemfuel. Or, you could feed it to your prisoners... For cannibal colonies, use human leather! It's not the greatest material in vanilla, that would be a tie between Devilstrand and Hyperweave (Thrumbofur is really good for chairs and stuff), but it gives psychopath pawns HUGE mood boosts when they wear all human leather. Make money. Drugs, guns and art are the best ways to make money in RimWorld, you can also sell slaves but the negative moodlets can add up quickly.

Had to kiss my entire food supply and c6ook goodbye. And sent 3 of the miners to the hpspital then blight hit the crops😫. Its only dumb luck a caravan with tons of food came along after a few game days. One thing I wish I knew is that you don't really have to do the lame pegleg trick to incapacitate a troublesome inmate. You can simply send someone with a good melee weapon (pref. sword), hack him a few times - also after he is downed - and you will most likely have severed a limb or two. You can savescum it if you want optimal results, but it's not strictly necessary so long as you accept a margin of error. I always send pairs of executioners and medics, so the medic can patch the poor fellow up immediately after the executioner has done his job. There is a risk of accidental killing to this, so keep an eye on the prisoner's health tab while you do it. Always a good idea to stop at 2-3 hours until death. For some strange reason, this has absolutely no impact on anyone but the prisoner. One of my teams consists of a bleeding heart doctor and a kind executioner.I think this is much more fun and immersive than pegleg amputations. You guys who read this have probably pegged me as a sick puppy by now, but I assure you, that's true.

My best basic tip is walled town > mountain base.
@orivalx5 жыл бұрын
Why?
@hlc54105 жыл бұрын
@@orivalx Many reasons. Sieges are a doddle (just have mortars of your own, which incidentally you can't have inside a mountain base) and are in fact welcome for the additional loot they bring. That only really leaves mechanoid drop pods as a problem and in a choice between having to deal with infestations or drop pods I know which I'm going to choose. Have a few guys always armed with EMP grenades inside the base and they're not difficult to deal with. Also a few EMP IED's laying around doesn't hurt. Add all that to it just being quicker and easier to build and it's just massively in favor of walled town. Being able to build greenhouses as well as hydroponics is also a plus. Honestly I can't see why anyone would bother with a mountain base at this point. Have a pillbox all around you base, then a wall about 20 tiles away from that and as many staggered walls as you want after that.

Otherwise the pawn doesn't know where you want the item taken, and will just leave it on the map. If you have a stockpile for a given item, then it will be hauled automatically by pawns doing the job, and by pawns assigned to hauling. Hope this helps! 😊

Did they remove the ancient dangers or something I recently started playing and my map doesn’t have one

I would recommend taking the whole year round planting cycle that I failed to do in my first gameplay! And also the try not to go near another base of neutral or bandit relation and Stuff like keep the temp by having 2 stone doors on the fridge and all that welp at least a door that slows you down at least 60% of the speed you enter so the cold won't leave and waste you power!

how do I determine my starting tech level? I know that under base game it doesn't change and some mods will let you change it based on the amount of research you do but I haven't figured out where you determine what your starting research level is (EX tribal etc.)

Hey quick question but why I see people making rooms circular other than hydroponics. In this video when u introduce the large space to store items.
@sprintonwater5 жыл бұрын
A lot of ppl make circular rooms with sunlamps/heaters in them and grow plants. Other than that circular rooms just look cool 😎

Definitely will at some point. I think it could be a while tho. Possible during Christmas sales, but unlikely imo. Winter sales next year I'd assume it will.

This game is frustrating. Nothing is explained in game. One example. Have a dead person in camp and no idea how to dispose of body. I don’t really wanna watch and research for hours just to figure out how to do basic things.

Reddit is always a good place for some good info. I found a few good things here as well (rim-world.com/guides/). Not everything there is 100% up to date, but most of it seems to still be applicable.

Doesn't explain alot of things. Like how to even get meat by hunting and using a butcher table. That said, the tips are really helpful. And the video is well scripted and presented. Not like that idiot doing the unwatchable guide because of constantly saying "uh uh um uh um um uh uh um um uh uh uh".
