heat has a big effect on waters ability to keep co2 in solution. Beer and carbonated water work when used in frying batters because the hot oil shock cooks the outer layer, so it has a ability to actually be trapped and create bubbles in the end product. And it’s a very viscous liquid. So even though the batter is loaded with nucleation points, the thick consistency keeps the bubbles in for a long time. This ehm very untraditional filling/custard ‘batter’ is very thin and the lack of eggs or anything else but flour and sugar to bind it probably means it starts to set at quite high temps. And the cooking time is so long. I would guess there is next to no difference based on the carbonation. The batter slowly warms up and all the co2 goes out of solution before the filling is set. But I’m don’t know, maybe someone could make a experiment? :) Make two pies but take a wisk and make one of the sodas flat before adding it
@andreal3239
@andreal3239 3 жыл бұрын
The added sugar removes the carbonation before it goes into the oven, as a side note, I learned about this sugar- pop de-fizzing effect when I was having stomach troubles and I could only drink flat pop, so trust that I know from experience when I say do not add sugar to a full pop unless you’re ready for half of it to be suddenly out of its container

I’ve made this many many times without the sprite but water. I add apple pie spices to the flour and sugar and omg let me tell you it is actually delicious! I’m making it for thanksgiving. It has the consistency and taste of the apple pie filling without the apples. Personally I think the gooey sauce in the apple pie and the crust are the best parts of an apple pie. I can do without the apples. Great adaptation for someone wanting apple pie on thanksgiving but just doesn’t have enough money.

Since you can’t taste the sprite, could you try this with lemon and lime seltzer (zero sugar) like la croix and then maybe add lemon and lime zest? Just thinking because you said it’s super sweet and since sprite is loaded with sugar plus you ADD more sugar to the actual recipe, do you think seltzer would make it less sweet but still be tasty from the vanilla and butter?

@@TheDetroitblack chess pie actually originated in England. Pie has been around since the ancient Egyptians. The first pies were made by early Romans who may have learned about it through the Greeks. These pies were sometimes made in "reeds" which were used for the sole purpose of holding the filling and not for eating with the filling. The Romans must have spread the word about pies around Europe as the Oxford English Dictionary notes that the word pie was a popular word in the 14th century. The first pie recipe was published by the Romans and was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie. he early pies were predominately meat pies. Pyes (pies) originally appeared in England as early as the twelfth century. The crust of the pie was referred to as "coffyn". There was actually more crust than filling. Often these pies were made using fowl and the legs were left to hang over the side of the dish and used as handles. Fruit pies or tarts (pasties) were probably first made in the 1500s. English tradition credits making the first cherry pie to Queen Elizabeth I.

Sprite is really good in fresh strawberry pie made with sliced or whole strawberries and a glaze on top. The Sprite makes it a little bit fizzy and the lemon lime flavors and citric acids makes the glaze more interesting. The glaze is usually made from strawberry jello, Sprite, and a little cornstarch. You can use sugar free jello and Sprite or substitute sparkling water. There's a ton of recipes online. Finding ones with Sprite or 7 up is difficult, but the only difference is subbing Sprite for the water in the glaze. Top with whipped cream or whipped topping. These are also really great as little tarts.

Irn Brew has changed their recipe & removed much of the sugar, which caused fans of the original recipe to stock up on the old stuff before the new sugar free recipe came into play. This was due to a "sugar tax" on sodas being brought in. In all honesty, much like Dr Pepper, the sugar free stuff tasted pretty similar to the original stuff, so was a bit pointless to be honest. It's no surprise to me that you can't taste the sprite. I grew up making what we called "dumb bunny dessert" which is essentially a super simple cobbler. We poured pie filling (we usually did cherry, but you can do anyt fruit pie filling) in the bottom of a 9x13 pan, sprinkle a box of cake mix on top, and then you could either use a stick of melted butter, or a can of any kind of soda, but we usually used sprite over the top, and try to make sure the whole thing gets some liquid. Then just bake at 350 for half an hour or so. Super easy, you can't taste the sprite, and you have a yummy dessert.
